  • If you like excellent period-dramas like this, then I highly recommend that you also watch the Danish series 'Monopoly' ('Matador') ... It.s not well known in England or the USA, because the foreign language, but the acting and depth of the series it's absolutely on pair with 'when the boat comes in' and 'Upstairs, Downstairs'... So if you don't mind reading English subtitles, do yourself a favor and watch the first (of 24) episode right here, to make up your own mind : /watch?v=mSQ7-nHAySk

  • i wished i was jack ford

  • great series! Jack Ford is such a great character

  • thanks for this & all your loads♥♥♥♥

  • Does anyone know where this first part was filmed as I do not recognise it?

I am thinking of the streets and the mine.

  • my mam, uncle and aunty were extras in this programme when they were little...they cant remember what episode...how can i find out?

  • @youngelvisnightowls Can't they recognise themselves? It would mean watching the whole series of course - but I did and it was very enjoyable.

  • @alanheath they were on for a few seconds that all theyre teling me...and they have never seen the episodes either :/

  • @youngelvisnightowls They can see the whole thing now thanks to the person who posted this episode on you tube!

  • I had never heard of this series before, when the British do a good series they do a gooooood series ! thanks.

  • Thanks for uploading this excellent series

  • Thanks for uploading this series. Best drama ever on British television. Now on YouTube wahay!!!

  • Especially John Nightingale who played Tom, who died of a massive heart attack in 1980..He was only in his early thirties.

  • @DaveyC95 That is frightening. As for me, I am glad to say I have got beyond that age.

  • @alanheath Yes, It is indeed..I am only 28, but apparently he just had a massive heart attack and dropped dead..The actor who played Billy died of cancer yet the two actors who played their parents are both still alive and well in to their eighties.

  • @DaveyC95 This film is now over 30 years old so I would have thought the parents were almost 90 if not over that age!

  • @alanheath Film, you mean series?

  • @DaveyC95 Series yes. I presume I was thinking of just this one clip when I wrote 'film'.

  • @DaveyC95 I cheated and looked it up! He was born in 1925 and she in 1921!

  • @alanheath Yes Jean Heywood is 90 and James Garbutt is 86..He was a grumpy so and so in this.

  • @DaveyC95 I thought he played the role very well. As a person who comes from this area, he was someone I could identify with (although I hope I am not like that)!

  • @alanheath Do you mean the men of the house were like that? I read an article about James Bolam that has put me right off him as a person where he said that when he was filming this he got the last train to the North East and the first one out when filming was completed..I am proud of my heritage, I was born in Salford, Manchester just like Albert Finney and Christopher Eccleston and the Screenwriter Debbie Horsfield to name a few.

  • @DaveyC95 I was thinking of Jessie's father although people like that can be found everywhere. As for James Bolam, I am surprised. I am not trying to make excuses as I do not know the circumstances, but is there any chance he was saying it ironically or as a bit of fun?

  • @alanheath Erm, No. He says he hated the place, even though he made so many shows based in the North East and Yorkshire (Biederbecke trilogy)..Biting the hand that feeds you so to speak,he obviously has lived down South for many years with Susan Jameson..He will not even give any fans of his an autograph saying, "I'm not interested in what they do for a living, so why should they be interested in what I do"..Forgetting that viewers watching his shows earns him a fortune, mainly from the BBC.

  • @DaveyC95 That certainly is no way to treat the hand that feeds you!

  • I only heard of this brilliant series through my mum, who watched this in the 70s, years before she had me..And i recorded the series end of 2009 beginning of last year off the Yesterday channel on satellite..I never caught the first couple of episodes until now..Some fantastic acting here..Love the fact that James Bolam and Susan Jameson are married in real life and are in New Tricks together aswell..Shocked when i read online that the two actors who played the Seaton brothers are dead now.

  • Fantastic series, cheers

  • Fantastic series, really enjoyed it. Cheers

  • Thank you for putting this on, I've just finished watching all 51 episodes and loved it all over again... I was very young the first time round and it brought back many memories!

  • 47daisydog Thanks a lot! I've just seen 'Our Friends in the North'. Love Geordie accent!

  • @podlasian65 I don't think the accent is all that accurate but if it were then people would not understand it!

  • I feel Jean Heywood's acting in this episode is too good - very upsetting. I met her once at a documentary about dialects at Tyne Tees TV studios and she struck me as being a very genuine person. I'm pleased to see she's still making appearances.

  • thanks for uploading this i just finished watching all 4 series i remember watching the first 2 when i was a kid living in yorkshire england it was a real treat to ss it again thanks again

  • @Hale3ma I heard about this series from my English friend who watched it when she was a child. I love the way the working class Seatons are presented. They resemble, to some extent, my own family. I am Polish of working class background and I'm discovering for myself how universal certain human actions and reactions can be.

  • And I've just 'discovered' this drama. It is really a great story! I've just seen all 51 episodes. Can you recommend anything as good as this? Now I'm hungry for historical English dramas!

  • @podlasian65 I discovered this by accident and totally fell in love with the series and became an instant bolam fan! Will see what else i can dig up as i love period dramas :D

  • @Hale3ma I was watching an episode I recorded last night - which now I won't be posting as you seem to have done it! I come from this area and remember when it came out in the 1970s although I was not interested then. Recently I have watched a few episodes with my mother when I have been staying with her!

  • @podlasian65 you might enjoy berkley square , upstairs ,downstairs and acouple of movies "a kind of loving"& room at the top all on you tube

  • @podlasian65 I suppose youv'e seen the 'Cranford', 'Lark rise to Candleford' stuff? What about the original 'Upstairs, Downstairs', The new 'Great Expectations'? Either 'Bleak House', 'Flambards' etc?

  • @ajivins1 .... hiding under your sleeve more of these great gems - thanks,

The quality and depth here is immense.

  • @podlasian65 A spooky kid's show I just saw one of set in the forties was 'The Children of Green Knowe'. Started well.

  • I remember the first time this was shown. It was an amazing series.

  • Thankyou for posting this :)
