  • i got an a820 and recorded a band practice on it thru a dda amr 24 (36 in, 24 buss). this was a real plug n play wth some 57's and other mics in that price range. damn fine sound for a half-baked run thru. can't wait to really put the time into a real session.

recorded an album on one in chicago years ago, and damn it sounded great.

among studer fans, the a800 sounds the best. a820 gets really high praises for its totally modular construction and the led meters give more precise readings.

  • MANY THANKS for taking the time to share your knowledge baz.....

  • Thank you, always a pleasure!

  • this is one COOLtape recorder!

  • I just repaired a studer B67, very nice machines, but i like otari professional machines more.

  • I like the Otari MX-55 though the tape transport electronics are not as clever as this machine, sounds great though!

  • well you never had a otari MTR-15

i think it the most advanced machine ever.

But i can repair studer/revox much faster than a complicated otari.

  • Just Googled the machine, wow, the MTR-15 looks great! wonder how it compares to a Studer A820, that's a machine I really want.

  • Well it is very advanced, it is completely digital in control. and it had a separate doby A B C unit...

    and is ridiculously heavey.

  • Many, many thanks for this. I have B67 and you told some things I wasn't even aware of! One question. Do you know if B67 is modable to varispeed? Just wondering, because someone was selling varispeed controller for Studer machines in eBay and B67 was mentioned.

  • Yes, these machines can have varispeed, looking at the back of the recorder in the middle are 2 D-type connectors, one is the remote the second is the capstan speed control, if your machine does not have that then it cannot use varispeed.

  • Well, guess what. I have it! Joy! :D Now I gotta start digging eBay for that controller.

  • I have one. they're also remarkable simply to repair. I wish I had a 1/2" headstack for it.

  • i wish i could get one too, i will have to save up some money mmmmmmmm jaja

  • Absolutely beautiful machine. I wish I could afford one of the better Studer tape decks.

  • Cheers! this one only costs £100, £50 for the recorder and £50 for the VU meter panel, nice when you get one cheap.
