I am still scratching my Head- I replaced the 2sb1201 and the 2 caps 10pf & 47PF as indicated. Also checking the bulb is little tuff when the oscilating frequency could up to 120khz. My meter wont cope with the voltages. Any other way of checking it before spending 40bucks?? Well I might replace the whole lot in and around the areas including the complementary push pull?
Leave the display setting on 100% too PREVENT overheating the circuit.A friend & I replaced the surface mount component in my ORIGINAL 746 & it worked GREAT afterwards! }:>)
I had a TX power loss in the first 2 years, I had read about that fault and was not surprised I was unlucky when it happened. But the loss of the back light is a new fault to me and looks like if it happens will be a right pain. Is it a common fault.. Heat sink compound is normally used to transfer heat from a component to a heat sink how is it working on its own?
Seems iCom has a lot of problems. They used to have pretty high quality radios. I swore by them not too many years ago. I can't see spending the money for one these days. They charge far too much for radios that many seem to fail shortly after warranty expiration. Almost a Chrysler, or a Ford.
This is a prime example of what occurs when you take a relatively simple device like a radio transceiver and add on all these nonsense functions. KISS, or Keep it simple stupid. iCom needs to wake up.
I had the same problem and your video I was a big help, thanks. Per gli eventuali italiani che avessero lo stesso problema, potete usare anche un BDX34C al posto del 2SB1201 originale che è di più facile reperibilità.
Good job! Mine just went out, 2 months after the warrnaty expired...Thanks for the vid; I'll make sure to test the bulb first - before shelling out twenty quid :-)
yes i made the mistake of not checking the bulb first but it will most probably be the reg as they get very hot! the one i replaced was blue because of the heat, this is why i used heat compound:) regards..
very helpful for those suffering with this problem, I believe it is quite common on these radio,s, shall keep this video for future use myself, cheers

Its a pretty common thing to go wrong. I fixed mine after it went out. I now just leave my backlight on at full power.

I hope your warranty has expired so you didn't violate it.

yes there was no warranty left so the repair had to be done by me, 55 pence part by the way and the bulb was £20.
I put this video up to maybe help others with the same prob as it is common(so icom said on the phone)the radio is 100% working and happy now:)
