hey felloutkid i play guitar and piano and have been for quite some time. I JUST picked up fiddle. It's a lot of fun and it's quite a bit easier due to the fact that I play guitar, piano helps knowing simply because of knowing the notes. I'd say it helps a lot. Bowing will take some time to master, im still all over the fret board with my bow XD

Fiddle playing isn't *just* fast tunes, you know. Many fiddle tunes are slow waltz-time numbers like "Maiden's Parayer," which is a well know fiddle tune. And many fiddle players don't just repeat themselves, variations are very common. We have different backup styles, (we chop when a mandolin plays for example) so really fiddle playing is a little different than what you say.

For any one who even thinks for second about buying a violin based on comments on the net DO NOT DO IT. Find a proffesional violinist who either works for a symphony or has a degree in performance and can sight who they studied under. Bring them to a violin shop with you, show them the violins you are thinking about buying and ask THEM to try them out and counsel you on what you should buy. They can play the violin to its full potential YOU CAN NOT. TAKE THEIR ADVICE!!!!!!!

To learn the basics you really need a good teacher that pushes you, so i suggest that you dont watch youtube videos, or try to teach yourself. I also took private lessons from first chair andrew z. from the syracuse syphony, he is a really great teacher. all i can say is, PRACTICEPRACTICEPRACTICE.

Of course it takes practice violin is not like playing a kazoo!I recommend that if you REALLY wanna learn the violin, get a teacher that puts the pressure on you to practice. If you don't, then you'll just keep at the same level, or you'll lose it. I'm a violinist & taught for 30 yrs. Good luck to anyone who tries to learn violin without any proper lessons. Of many who've tried most end up with technical faults which stop their progress. Bowing IS difficult, as is learning vibrato.

Unless you've lost a LH finger. Left holds the violin, right the bow.

Rosin - just enough to make the violin play. Dust off the violin after you finish practice.

Buy violin, find a teacher buy some lessons, AT THE BEGINNING, to avoid developing bad habits.
