It was originally written by Dr. Hook called 'I Never Got to Know Her". I'm listening to it as I type this and it pales incomparison to the man with the D-35 in the video above =)

It might have written for Dr Hook, but

it was writeen by good old Shel Silverstein.

Ah, touche. It sounds like a Silverstein; certainly not like his "Falling Up" children's book or "Hear Old Johnny Sing". He's a fantastic song otherwise. I feel bad that the guy ahead of us didn't get his answer for four months!!
