The creator of Pokemon didn't die, it was one of the former head writers of the anime series. Satoshi Tajiri (who Ash is named after in the original Japanese) is still alive and well.

Still, got to give my respects to that former writer. He apparently worked on the show during the Kanto and Johto seasons, which were my favorites.
