I haven't seen this.... but I notice that Paltrow doesn't seem to make any attempts to sound like Plath did. I'm referring to her voice... would've been great if she had.
even the portrayal of plath in this movie is bizarre. the opening scene of the film is a line from "lady lazarus" and sets the movie up as if Plath herself is the character of lady lazarus. if anyone is really interested in this, i'd suggest reading georgiana banitas essay "the same identical woman: plath and the media" it's amazing.
ps--i'm writing a thesis on this film which is why i'm super nerdy over it :)
@toloveinthird The film leaves out so much. The significance of Plath burning that one book. It was a book of Shakespeare that Hughes treasured. She paced the floor for HOURS the night before she died. She planed on killing the kids- but changed her mind. She had an abortion. The film falls short in so VERY many ways. Of course, none of us knew Plath- don't know how she liked her toast- or how she spoke in a general conversation. People think they do- they dont.
@toloveinthird Read a book called Giving Up: The Last Days of Sylvia Plath it is a short memoir by a FRIEND of hers- Jillian Becker. It makes her a PERSON- not just someone to study- or treasure b/c she took her life. So many know of her suicide- and know little about her actual works. This book says in a few pages- what can never be found in a biography. Good Luck.
@MeinKleinTier The Bell Jar is not about Sylvia Plath at all, it'sa fictional novel with a character named Esther Greenwood. Of course the Plath character is different in the movie because it is portraying Plath not the fictional character of Greenwood. There IS a huge difference between a character an author creates and the author him/herself.
@toloveinthird In The Bell Jar's carse, however, the character of Esther Greenwood is obviously a version of Plath herself. The majority of the book is autobiographical except for a few exceptions. You can research this if you want. Like Esther in TBJ, Plath won a guest editor position w/ Mademoiselle magazine while attending college. Plath did live in NYC for a summer and was so disillusioned by her experiences there that when she returned home she sunk into a great depression.
@toloveinthird continuing: Like in TBJ, Plath also attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills and hiding in a cave in her cell. She did go to a mental institution, funded by her benefactor, just like in the book.
mysticgirl1000, I have just read Anne Stevenson's 'Bitter Fame' so I do not agree with your comment:
'controlled by the hughes...their campaign to defame her...to cover up for the dysfunction of his family' - Given that Hughes published her undiscovered poems- is this a fair comment? The Feminists painted Hughes in a very poor light- Sylvia did provoke the affair through her volatile behaviour, and in fact Hughes's family were always kind to Sylvia- I would recommend the biography to you.
what paltrow shows is the contradiction of being rich and privileged.
like Hayek, who demeaned Frida with her playboy photo shoots for this film, Paltrow's lack of intelligence wasn't lowbrow exploitation like Hayek, but it revealed an intellecutal laziness that's surprising when you think that she has so many educational resources available to her.
you can tell she did no reading with a critical intellect of what may have been the brits and the Hughes intentions in portraying Plath.
controlled by the hughes and their 80s campaign to defame her and her talent to cover up for the dysfunction of his family and his evil sister.
what these people always leave out is the fact that the woman ted left sylvia for also killed herself. ted's sister was a misogynist freak in love with her brother.
What about Sylvia as a person defined by her thoughts and actions and not by her husband? Honestly this movie makes it out like she was a desperate, stereotypical love-lorn girl when in reality, she was depressed. Not depressed because of Ted, but in spite of him. Sure, he might have been a dick but this is just an insult to her memory. Read her poems. Read her stories. There you will find Sylvia. This...this is just mis-imagining a very complex person and that is a dangerous thing to do.
I think it's awful that to try and make this phenomenal book into a movie thats not even remotely like the book. In the book she is cynical, self loathing, pill popping to get away from this world; not heartbreak.
@jessicahalerules This film is not a film version of , The Bell Jar. It is a biopic that I thought was pretty good. If you didn't like the film that's fine but dislike it because you didn't think it was a poor film, not for being unlike a book it wasn't even based upon. There was a film version of, The Bell Jar in 1979 starring Marilyn Hassett , which I also thought was pretty good. worth checking out if you can find it.
@jessicahalerules This film is not based on The Bell Jar. Not sure why you would think it is. There was a film version in 1979 starring Marilyn Hasset which I thought was pretty good. worth checking out if you can find it which is doubtful. Julia Stiles is producing and starring in a new version, But don't know when it will be released.
She was special, a one-off, but due to A LOT of stuff, she committed suicide in her 30s, or was murdered, depending on who you ask.
If you read The Bell Jar by her, which is semi-autobiographical, you'll see she was always searching for someone "pure" who she could love, and be loved by.
(She seems to have had a thing about sexual purity)
From what I've heard, she never really found lasting happiness.
That alone is tragic, but then you get into who she was inside, and that is more sad.

this film is absolutely incredible. but i cant watch it anymore cause it makes me emotional too much.

Movies can only endeavor to encapsulate a small fragment of the essence of any story book.
