@snsdlovermuahahaha For rice cake for tteokbokki, short grain rice (known as sushi rice) is used. This rice cake balls are made with sweet rice flour (glutinous rice flour)
I've been looking this for long long time.. when I first saw it in Family Outing, I asked my mom to cook it.. I explain to her how the final look and she call me WEIRD..!! There is no way pumpkin turn into porridge.. NOW.. I can make it myself.. =D
@Maangchi I tried it. =) I dont have that kind of squash but I used a diff kind of squash. I don't have rice powder but I used rice - cooked it into porridge and blended it til puree. Mixed both. Voila! It's the same taste. =)
I would be pretty happy if someone gave me soup when I was trick or treating. It beats getting an apple.Or a freakin toothbrush. That always made me so mad.
I got a friend to bring me mochi flour from the US so I could make this (I live in Turkey, no mochi here!). We made it tonight; didn't have any pine nuts but put on some toasted walnuts and cinnamon; everyone loved it!
@Maangchi So normally it would not be at a normal grocery store? because I live about 2 hrs from a Korean grocery store so I'm just hoping for a way :) If not I'd have to wait to have time to go down there x_x"
This is a lot like the traditional pumpkin dish that we have, but instead of mushing the squash we cut it into random bite size ( a little bigger than the average bite size) then boil it and add sugar, but with no rice balls. ;) So I'm interested in trying this ^_^ thanks Maangchi!
wow the way the dough is made and the way it's shaped is how my family makes this chinese new years dish , this will definitely be easy to make and delicious :)
Hi maangchi, may i know what is butternut squash and where can i get it in Singapore? Can i use pumpkin instead of squash and is it the same method to make the korean red bean porridge too?
@Misssupershiny Any of the pumpkins/squash they use in SE Asia with a smooth orange inside are fine, like the ones the Thais use in curries sometimes. Like Maangchi said, the big orange ones (if you even have them there) aren't good, are fibrous and not so much for eating.
@mindoro33 no, if you use cold water, it will fall apart easily. Use hot water. Check the recipe and more tips and info in the recipe on my website if u want to make this. Good luck!
Can i use just one squash instead of 2 ... and how would that change for rice cake balls.... I really want to make it today lol... <3 YUMMY <3 with some Jjajangmyun
ooo i had this last time at the korean grocery store restaurant ~ but they didn't have the little balls ~ maybe its because its a fast food place ~ it was good but too thick like eating glue ~ i wil make this at my house next time but with the little balls
Maangchi, I made this tonite with my daughter and we had so much fun. We were joking about who was making the big lazy rice ball. Your tradition is great. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I had a blast making this and it came out really good. We all enjoyed it.
@buddymay99 I'm very happy to hear about your successful hobakjuk making! Especially when you made the rice cake balls with your daughter, it must have been lots of fun! Thank you for your update!
For the whole of my 15 years of living in this world, i have never tasted pumpkin. Really. So i have the urge to make this porridge. But the thing is, i cant find any sweet rice flour in my country. Though i can find GLUTINOUS RICE FLOUR. If that can be used, how many cups of sugar should i put in?
yes, you can, but sweet rice flour (glutinous flour) is better, and also add powdered sugar, too. Good luck with making delicious hobakjuk and let me know how it turns out .
I saw the Family Outing members (you know the one with Yoo Jae Suk) making this on their show, I immediately wanted to try eating this. Too bad I can't find any of those Rice Cake flour to make the balls here in Malaysia. I think they called it 'little birds' eggs' in the show?

cuteeee i <3 u maangchi!! u r so sweet and funny!! and btw the small rice cakes...you can buy them at any chinese market they come frozen! so you don't have to spend so much time making them yourself...but it probably tastes alot better if u make it hhahahah i loveeee all of your recipies!!!

I'm still eating it now..lolz!
I actually made it twice today. I happen to accidentally burnt the first badge and it was HORRIBLE!!!hahaha..So, being very determined, I went out and bought 2 whole butternut squash...
So yeah, it turned out DELICIOUS and I can't wait to try your other recipes.

I'm supposed to bring some into my Korean workplace tomorrow- hopefully they'll like it! Why do they want an American to make them Korean food? Hahaha.
That looks good! I have a butternut squash, so maybe I will try making some hobakjuk.
Also, I have to agree with chefkoo, you can use most kinds of pumpkins for food. You can make pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, even pumpkin ice cream! And you can toast the seeds with some salt to make a nice snack.
Thank you so much for making all the wonderful videos! I'm a big fan of your work... I love cooking, eating and even thinking about many different kinds of food. :) Your work inspires me a lot so thank you very much. Korean food is wonderful, and this pumpkin porridge is one of my fovorite ones. I will make this soon!

Hi Maangchi, I recently found your video on youtube and became a fan of you. I've almost watched all of your videos and really enjoyed them. This dessert is one of my favorite Korean desserts and for a long time I always want to know how to make it.(I'm Taiwanese, not Korean.) Thank you so so much for your efforts in showing us how to cook Korean foods. Keep it up!
Great video, the soup looked scrumptious. Also, I really enjoyed the Halloween reggae music playing in the background. It was a nice touch.
Thank you for sharing the recipe, and I hope your holiday season is eventful and exciting. First Halloween, then Thanksgiving then Christmas; this is truly the best time of the entire year.
Yummiiii~Im going to make that now for halloweens! And i'll give the little children some bowls of soup too^^ Haha!! BUT HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN TOO, MAANGCHI!!!

I'm making this right now!
Would you believe the supermarket in Korea doesn't carry sweet rice flour? Only glutinous. I had to get premade rice balls- what is convenience coming to?! I'm supposed to bring some into my Korean workplace tomorrow- hopefully they'll like it! Why do they want an American to make them Korean food? Hahaha.
Thanks Maangchi, you are the best!

You should have put the Addams family theme in the beginning, it would've been real adorable, although you're already adorable enough!
I like the new default picture...its sassy. :]

P.S. - Nice costume.:)

hi Maangchi, did you sieve the butternut squash after scrapping them out before boiling them with the rice balls? Thanks^^_^
griffinhearts 3 years ago
no, I didn't. As you see in the video, put the cooked squash into the pot directly. Thank you!
