It seem these people are there, not buried because they wanted to be there when they died. -But what I don't understand is why there's children and babies also there, as children and babies would be unable to say or understand what they would like when they died. My opinion on leaving these people like this is that it's wrong. If everyone decided they did not want to be buried, then there would be skeletons and corpses everywhere. This is the Capuchin catacombs ... i have been there and it is surreal.. it runs on a gold coin donation by monks and is definitely a place to see if you are in palermo .. outstanding and surprisingly not smelly! tho it is the stuff nightmares are made from!!

My God, after this video i made some research on the net about these catacombs. I was impressed by little sleeping angel Rosalia Lombardo. How impressive video. Of course, the dead bodies is not something nice but one can see and draw conclusions. I was indeed impressed and touched by it. P.S. The ones who were like alive left me speechless
Oh yes, i imagine.When i said it's impressive, i did not mean "nice" of course to see the corpses, impressive was some of them and how they are preserved after sooo many years. Here we have the catacombs of St. Demetrios in Thessaloniki where you can see where He was hiding as one of the first Christians of the city. But they are not scary. ;-)
Scary is a strong word. I am not scared oftenly but the catacombs just creep you out. There is a legend that deep within the catacombs the gates of hell are opened. (Not that i believe in hell since i am an atheist)

I can see your viewpoint on this and the ethical issues involved with displaying the dead to the public. Honestly, they are dead, organic waste. When I die I wouldn't care less of what anyone does with my body because I would no longer be there. It depends on your beliefs.When you die, you are gone OR when you die, you are in a better/worse place.
Also, it's good to consider that the catacomb in Italy was initially made for display for people to visit them, be able to hold their hands and pray.

Also, a lot of these bodies were embalmed so that they would be better preserved. If they just threw bodies down there, you can bet no one would want to go close to the church because of the smell.

This is the Capuchin catacombs ... i have been there and it is surreal.. it runs on a gold coin donation by monks and is definitely a place to see if you are in palermo .. outstanding and surprisingly not smelly! tho it is the stuff nightmares are made from!!

This video is so captivating. The music is fitting and the mood somber in respect for the dead in the catacombs. This is truly a remarkable place to visit though very morbid. But history lies with those who no longer speek.

Seems a bit like what they do in PNG with dead people.
They wrap up the body take it right up high on a hill and on a ledge they put the body there and just leave it.
And if you want you can go back and see the body, I take it this was the same deal.

My God, after this video i made some research on the net about these catacombs. I was impressed by little sleeping angel Rosalia Lombardo. How impressive video. Of course, the dead bodies is not something nice but one can see and draw conclusions. I was indeed impressed and touched by it. P.S. The ones who were like alive left me speechless

Oh yes, i imagine.When i said it's impressive, i did not mean "nice" of course to see the corpses, impressive was some of them and how they are preserved after sooo many years. Here we have the catacombs of St. Demetrios in Thessaloniki where you can see where He was hiding as one of the first Christians of the city. But they are not scary. ;-)

Scary is a strong word. I am not scared oftenly but the catacombs just creep you out. There is a legend that deep within the catacombs the gates of hell are opened. (Not that i believe in hell since i am an atheist)

Well even if you don't believe it, it influences you right? To be honest, I am very scared. I would not e able to visit the particular catacombs even if 10 people would be around me .... Usually these places are accompanied by legends like this. The gates of hell...makes you even more scary. Brave me!

I can see your viewpoint on this and the ethical issues involved with displaying the dead to the public. Honestly, they are dead, organic waste. When I die I wouldn't care less of what anyone does with my body because I would no longer be there. It depends on your beliefs.When you die, you are gone OR when you die, you are in a better/worse place.
Also, it's good to consider that the catacomb in Italy was initially made for display for people to visit them, be able to hold their hands and pray.

Also, a lot of these bodies were embalmed so that they would be better preserved. If they just threw bodies down there, you can bet no one would want to go close to the church because of the smell.
