I'm not sure if spanking is abuse or not, but just because in the past was acceptable to some extent does not mean that it wasn't still abuse then. Way back in the day in America, children used to work coal mines 7 days a week with crazy hours. It may have been socially accepted, but that does not mean that it was not wrong. African American's in the south used to have to use different water fountains and different bathrooms, etc, just because of their race. Was that right as well?

we are ready for debate. corporal punishment is absolutely wrong. try spanking or hitting an adult and see how far it gets you; children need MORE protection for their vulnerable bodies and minds, NOT LESS. There are other and absolutely positive ways of directing children which leaves their self-esteem intact, and if a parent isn't able to deal with normal behavior of children, they shouldn't have children or get someone else to care for them properly. There is a HUGE diffrence.I rarely spank my kids, it's a last resort.But if kids become immune to spanking, what makes people think they won't become immune to "time-outs"and groundings as well?.As a parent of 3 I can tell you that ANY form of punishment, used long enough eventually becomes ineffective.I was spanked as a child, but i always knew why it was happening, and so do my kids. we need to be disiciplining our kids out of love, not anger.Thats when corporal punishment becomes abuse.

The point of discipline is to add a negative effect towards the children to let them know what they are doing is wrong. Taking the toys away means they can't have fun, time outs mean they aren't aloud to move or talk or anything, spanking is embarassing. Do you think a child is jumping for joy when you take their toy away?

@AngelDust155 sure there are negative emotions experienced in many things but i'm talking about unresovled negative emotions that come from being attacked by someone . it is unresolved because the parent never apoligizes and makes it right. I use to be all for non violent punishments such as time outs or grounding but having raised my child for ten years so far i have found that bad behavior is not caused by a lack of punishment any more than a head ache is caused by an asprin deficency.

I don't smoke, never tried any other drugs in my life, I can't stand alcohal nor did I ever BEG to drink some, I've never been in a fight, never had sex (because I don't WANT to) Also, not one of my friends do drugs, drinks a lot, or ever get in fights (few have had sex but I'm 18 and many of them are older than me anyways so)
