The best DJ's came from the 60's and 70's from then on we listened to a lot of junk, but I loved to listen to the likes of Alan Fluff Freeman, Pete Murray, Mike Ahern (of Caroline fame) Dave Cash, Johnny Walker, Jimmy Saville , Duncan Johnson and John Peel but to name a few, also a lot of artists of that era would not have been discovered if it were not for the sharp ears of the likes of John Peel and Johnny Walker and a few other DJ's of that time, Sadly some of them are no longer with us,
Magic ! This took me back to the mid 60`s, when, no matter where I was, I tried to get home to record Top Of The Pops from our old Decca stereogram onto the Ferguson reel to reel, so I kept up with the latest, and didn`t have to pay 10s 6p for the vinyl. I edited out the taliking and played for hours. Great times. Not arf.
what a Great vid !! I used to listen to Pick of The Pops every Sunday on my tranny at 5.00 pm... they were the days ..Not Arf !!thanx for posting ... long live the 60s'... lyndloo
great post superden! what a great show this was, inventive, original, and entertaining. i can't understand why the BBC broadcast dale winton's bland version of it??? they should play alan freeman shows from the archives. winton's show doesn't go out live, so why bother with a pale imitation?
Alan was a one off, a real talent, and a lovely genuine human. I was lucky to live my youth in the 70s and have him in my life every week, with POTPs, the rock show, and for an all too short year, his daily afternoon radio one show, and how good it was to listen to him. We still love you Alan. The radio is not the same without you. Hope I get to heaven so I can meet you !
I was lucky enough to be in the studio at Broadcasting House to see Pick of the Pops go out three times during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was only a fan who wrote to Alan and asked if I could sit in on a session. He was a great guy and a wonderful DJ.
@MJC1124 omg lucky guy..he was the best chart show host..ill always get fluff on my needle...respect..tc alan line up your discs..ill be with you ...spin those discs...
@MJC1124 I hope the stories on the net about Freeman hosting child abuse parties at his flat with young boys from children's homes in the company of the rich, powerful and 'untouchable' like high ranking police officers protected by Freemasons, MPs, gangland figures like Ron Kray and also Jimmy Savile are not true, but it makes one think, like 'no smoke without fire' etc
Great memories of Alan Freeman in the 1960s. Mind numbing Sunday afternoon set walks at boarding school were made bearable only through Freeman's brilliant presenting of Pick of the Pops, playing the week's top 20. A true master among presenters.
As the late great John Peel once remarked Fluff was the greatest out and out DJ of them all. And in my own personal opinion, he still is. RIP Fluff thanks for the rock show and POTP memories.
......and the 90's too. I have on open reel tape, several of the 'Pick of the Pops' shows he did on Radio 1 and later Radio 2 in the 1990's before he was too ill to continue broadcasting. I play them often. He sounded original and fresh right up until the end. A true professional!
Alan Was my very dear Friend - I was 13 when I first started going to studio B1 at BBc portland place every Sunday. As I gre into adulthood my lovely neighbor with the white mini and I had lunch many times when I moved to Florida he called me during every Hurricane and made me feel safe -- Alan I will always love you forever -- Margaret xx's
