If you want to see another kinda contemporary/commentary approach to Sita's story, a really good film is Lajja. It's a bollywood film, and though it has some over the top elements, it's a really interesting insight on how the story of Sita affected, and still affects, the lives of women in India today. As for this, I love the differnt styles of animation, and the music used! The shadow-people are my favorite, love the tiny details in them!
@rhinomantis88 I agree rhinomantis88. Besides, Christianity pretty much lacks a sense of humor, and anyone who made a movie about Jesus half as funny, charming, and light-hearted as this would be pretty much crucified. CHRISTIANITY IS NOT FUN! Haha.
Wow.. so great.. beautiful... hallelujah... someone with humour and creativity presenting the gorgeous history of ramayana... dandavats to you guys... and hope you can make gita govinda one day so the world may drown in prema..xx
this is actually pretty inaccurate. Lakshman (ramas brother went to banishment with sita and ram. and Lakshman was told by ram to guard the hut. and when the deer screamed after being killed by ram, she thought it was ram, so she sent lakshman to get him, and lakshman drew a circle around the house, and if anyone was to step into the hut, they would be burnt to ashes.
@antlerbaby a burnable DVD image is freely downloadable via the film's website. And if you have a blu-ray player or PS3, don't miss the AVCHD image - 720p quality and it can be burned on a regular-size DVD!
this is crap. the indians who have narrated this story should be ashamed of what they've done. you think he was born in ayodhya!!!! and big round lotuses!!! how sick can you get! proves how much you know about your own culture and your values
@bs328bd P.S. please familiarize yourself with the Ramayana written by Valmiki - he described sita in much more graphic sexual detail than even the movie did. Will you be protesting him next?
@bs328bd Couldn't it be that different regions have different versions or interpretations of the Ramayana? Plus it's an unscripted conversation, people aren't perfect and mistakes happen. It's like asking a Christian, of any denomination, questions on the bible. Their are different versions of the bible and most of the time they will confuse stories or forget something.
well you are not asking any denomination question, but using foul language in a play which is respected and sung as a part of religion hence it is offensive, there is a difference between sentences " the woman is beautiful" and "the babe's got nice tits". Hope you got my point and why I find it offensive.
She is not wearing a whole lot of jewellery...with her sanyasi clothes. Basic ornaments like rings, earings, atleast one chains will be used..though they are in sanyasi. No ornaments during sanyasi is also considered non-auspicious. When Ravana is kidnapping her, Garuda - a bird like creature will come and attack. The bird fails during the attack with Ravana. The Garuda, conveys Rama that it seen ravana taking her to lanka. SHE WAS NOT DROPPING JEWELS till LANKA ON THE WAY. READ RAMAYANA WELL!
@narenreddy7 Please remember that this section of the movie was NOT SCRIPTED - it was purely taken from the conversation between the three commentators, which was a REAL CONVERSATION, not scripted. It doesn't matter how much Nina Paley may or may not have understood the Ramayana, the conversation between the three indian natives still happened that way naturally.
Bollywood is a style and is it's own art form. It is not the only kind of Indian film and certainly it has it's own good share of out and out trash - but it has to be appreciated and disparaged on it's own merits -
The strange thing about the west - we will disparage and downgrade anything that is not American and European American at that - we will convince other people of what trash there art and music is and just when they disparage it themselves - the West adopts/co-opts the trash -
Craig D. Lindsey, local film critic here in NC, listed Sita...as one of his ten favorite movies for 2009. He mentioned that it was available on the internet. Interesting choice.
they are not showing lotuses on her. thisis the way sita was described to the ravan by her sister. it is in ramayana if you can fin an unedited version
I watched this truly revolutionary and artistic animated movie at the "San Joaquin International Film Festival". And was highly dissapointed by the extrordanaraly low turnout of people who were interested in seeing it......The ironic part of this is that "Stockton, Calit. has a very "large -old and established Indian Community" residing within in it.
You can say the same thing about "Us American's" with our terrible entertainment tastes. Horrible entertainment taste's aren't just centric to one background.............
@groofle Its only trash because you arent cultured. There is more to it than the glitz. If you actually left your computer, you'd experience more of the world...
@Bccaundefined I am indian. Bollywood has started making some good movies now but before they stuck to the love, song and dance movies. I don't get your comment.
@groofle I stand corrected. I fully apologize for that one. Most people that I hear that from are like these spoiled kids that'd rather troll than experience anything for themselves. Im just speaking from what I saw. I loved the movies.. Although I am a little enamored by "shiny". lol
@Bccaundefined I am indian. Bollywood has started making some good movies now but before they stuck to the love, song and dance movies. I don't get your comment.
how is it anti-hindu/anti-india? It's a retelling of the ramayana (sp =x). It's awesome. after watching this i want to learn MORE about it. so stop being silly kthx.
Coz there is no reference to lakshmana brother of rama who was there along with Rama and sita. And at 8.04 they are telling these are stories this shows her attitude towards hinudism.... by the way sita's jewels didn't go up to lanka as these geniuses say.... she just throws down and vanaras find it and return it to Rama then they come to the conclusion that she must have been kidnapped,
@Wiiosten I totally agree. I don't see the racism at all. But several of my Indian friends pointed out that Rama is revered in India. The Rama's Praises song can be very insulting because Rama is put in an unfavorable light.
FYI the film's director read several versions of the Ramayana and has high respect for both it and Indian culture. I suggest you learn *at least some* information about the movie before you make such blatantly idiotic statements.
take your Hindutva bullshit away. retellings of Ramayan are inherintly part of Hindu culture. there are tons of Sitayanas out there. if you dont like it, then go away.
