Torrance, CA holds a pretty nice and respectable military parade every year on Armed Forces Day. Lots of soldiers in fatigues march. There are flyovers of fighter jets, cargo aircraft, helicopters and vintage WWII planes. And even tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, self-propelled howitzers and support vehicles roll by. VERY nice looking and impressive while still retaining an American hot dog-and-soda kind of feel. More cities should hold these parades. I was previously unaware of these.
Holding military parades just for the purpose of having a military parades is just a waste of time. You gotta combine the with something, like fourth of July. Have the military march in a different city each year and there you go.
It wouldn't hurt us to do so...every once in a blue moon. We've done it in the past. Plus, it helps the general public gain a much greater appreciation for all the billions that go into all those men and equipment. If France can hold an annual Bastille Day parade then it wouldn't kill us to do something along those lines every Armed Forces Day or July 4th. Just sayin'.
@TheDarthEddie hI Darth. Parades are expensive too. Lots of personnel time go into them when soldiers could be training for other things. Speaking of US military parades, I invite you to search YouTube on the terms West Point Parade. I have a complete parade posted -- 45 min long -- Bob M
America doesn't put much effort into showcasing it's military, and rarely does military parades (unlike Russia and Communist China). It simply shows its dominance in the field.
hmmmm....think the americans need to improve on the military music just a tiny bit. (but then i grew up listening to HMRM) and the drill is quite plain i think. no knees up stuff etc.
@joelwhitaker American drill is very simple. Purposefully so. During the revolution against England we had few professional soldiers. We trained drill enough to effectively fight the British, but not for the parade ground. This philosophy holds true today. There are few if any unnecessary or showy moves. The moves that are required, though, are required to be done correctly.
Nice Queen Anne's Step from the Old Guard. Wish that was still in the regulations :( Their drum major is the only person in the US Military who is allowed to salute with their left hand.
what is better??? when a nation does good big and terrifying Parades and loses a war against a a nation that demonstrates its military power in the battle-field and doesn't do this kinds of parades that only shows control over the people... yea this is US....not chinia or russian or any other country that thinks its powerfull by showing other nations its military,,,by dancing,,
Hmm.. they may be one of the, if not the most, technically advanced nations with regards to military technoligy... but the US army rally rather does look horrid.
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX Hi Friend US Drill is much simpler than British. As colonials fighting you long ago we needed simple drill to be learned quickly by civilians and never got around to fancying it. We have NO SLOW STEP at all except a rare ceremonial unit. Actually these folks US style drill is quite good becaue their backs are straight, eyes forward, arm swing correct and all in step. That's about it for us. They also showing a very serious facial demeanor which is also part of our style
I agree. America has terrific military technology but its soldiers in its military parade are nothing compared to russia, china or north korea. I watch those parades and am in awe.
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX well, the american army itself doesnt focus on sharpness, but go look up our honor guards. may i suggest the Marine Corps silent drill team or the Navy ceremonial drill team? or, you could check out the JROTC drill teams. there for high school students and they train in disciplined drill. and they do a pretty good job at it. i should know, im in one.
I don't see how it's possible to put so little movement into drill. The marching is just walking in time. Other than that, for one of the world's youngest militaries, the US has come a VERY long way.
Marines have always marched better than soldiers. I'm an army brat and wished it were the other way around. The Army does put more emphasis on the practical stuff of war [being good] as opposed to drill [looking good]. In my opinion. Bob M
This is not a military parade. Its men in nice uniforms walking in partially crooked lines.
I would want to see a real United States military parade. Or at least a worth respecting representative battalion of a couple of men to send to parades like the Victory Parade in Moscow. The way the Americans presented themselves there was not as they could have.
I also would like to see a parade of the scale of Russia or China. It would be interesting to see it.
gosh from all the prussian/(german) military traditions you adopted you left out the most important. the marches. yet you got a good military. keep going usa
@CEGreenMachine Unfortunately in this parade no John Philip Sousa marches were played. Sousa was an American, and he's called The March King. He had one of the finest bands in world history - and [says PBS] made more money in the music business than anyone else until the Beatles came along. He did it through through personal appearances with his band and the sale of sheet music for his marches. They are still widely played world wide.
I'm not totally sure, but I believe that we (the United States) used to have fairly big military parades pre World War 1. I remember seeing footage in documentaries of presidents such as Woodrow Wilson and TR at military parades.
@TideatMileHigh Perhaps they were part of presidential inauguration parades. I know that in Obama's parade the entire cadet corps of Virginia Military Institute marched - that was 1000 cadets
It's a shame America doesn't show huge military parades like China or Russia. It would be insane to see what America could show in a military parade. Black suited soldiers with Abraham tanks, m-16's and perhaps an air show with the new Raptors as well. That would be a beatiful sight and perhaps motivate some American teenagers to stop acting like morons and act in honor and with the diligence of soldiers.
I know the US does not do big military paradelike those other countries, but I've always wanted to see a full US Military Parade to see how big is it with all the military artilery equipments too.
I hate to say this, but don't watch the North Korean army parade and the Chinese army parade before this video. They put the U.S. Army parade to shame. They have straight lines throughout the marches and do not miss a step at all. If the army is going to march in a parade, then they need to practice some more to make sure they are precise because you know other countries who dislike us are watching our every move. Just my opinion, though.
If we had one big march with other countries China would totally embarrass us unless we practiced for at least a year. Because they are freaking AWESOME at their parades.
@wizzzer1337 too reminiscent of Communism and the Cold War for most American's tastes. People already call Obama a socialist/communist, can you imagine what people would say if the US started doing USSR/PRC/DPRK style parades..?
On army bases there is often a monthly retirement parade or review. There was a parade to celebrate winning the first Gulf War. There are often parades associated with a change of command of a major unit. There are parades at the end of army schoolings - such as basic training. The Marines have a monthly parade in Washington DC. Bob M.
@Hitsulikeapunch Actually, something similar is going to happen soon. For the Bicenntenial of Mexico's Independence, 15 armies are going to march together in Mexico City. Pretty neat right?
@Hitsulikeapunch toodaay it's Mexico's 200th independence aniversary and there's going to be a military parade wich will include militaries from 16 different countries including USA, RUSSIA, GERMANY, FRANCE and 12 more
@Hitsulikeapunch Russia did that already, they marched with the USA, Britain, Poland, France, Normandy and a couple of others last year if I recall correctly. It was pretty heartwarming to say the least! :) lol
@Hitsulikeapunch they have, youtube "WW2 Victory Parade 2010" most of the countries involved in ww2 all paraded in red square. the US, Russia, UK, China, India, Aus and lots more all took part
@AmericanMADE1986 The red coats are a US army ceremonial unit called The Old Guard in Washington DC. During the revolutionary war bands wore colors the opposite of the troops colors - they were non combatants - and the rules of war then were that they should not be fired at. Bob M
Thats interesting. What was the purpose during war? Only playing music? Was that generally the case on all battlefields around the world not to fire on military muscians?
@Nogger86Germany The bands position during battle was generally to the rear. After a battle they would sometimes act as medics and help clear the battlefield of wounded.
@rmorecook It was also important during the wars of the 18th and 19th century for Musicians, and Officers to wear colors that contrasted that of their infantryman, to speak for their non-combatant status. We aren't trying to show off our military like other countries do, this was just a simple good bye to some politicians kinda thing, and most of our Military serves in various places all over the globe.
@baronofcheese This is not a real military parade. This is just a formal passing. The US really does not do big military parades. The politicians think that it demonstrates a people being controlled by the military. I would disagree, i would love to see a big military parade like Russia or China.
not exactly stunning in light of the chinese, north koreans or the yemenis (you should seriously check their parades out!) but the rifle drills were pretty slick.
stick in a few abrams, bradleys and battalion sized formations and we'll have a pretty impressive display. question is where the hell in DC would such a parade take place?
@fludblud exzactly we dont have roads that big or giant slabs of concrete for just parades its not practical and they are trying to show off what they have we dont need to show off the rest of the world knows
@Ytpoopy When it comes to ceremonial pageantry, the U.S. military ain't even close to, say, the Chinese. Whole thing looks sloppy. Even the civilian dignitaries on the viewing stand have terrible bearing. Chatting and fidgeting on the stand, like Rumsfeld and Bush did here, while the formation is "eyes-right" on you is just disrespectful to the troops. When being saluted, one should return it properly.
We should have real parades like Russia and China. Have the honor guards of each branch marching down Pennsylvania Ave. with some tanks and other military vehicles. Also have the air force fly some planes. That would be awesome!
true that. there marches are sick and perfect but ours kinda suck. the again they have those giant wide roads we they march on and we dont have roads that big. still..a good march is needed
@Kamikaze1943ful You can hear The Old Guard play Yankee Doodle at 4:45 in this video

@chriztoph3 The Russians parades are better.
baronofcheese 1 year ago
@baronofcheese This is not a real military parade. This is just a formal passing. The US really does not do big military parades. The politicians think that it demonstrates a people being controlled by the military. I would disagree, i would love to see a big military parade like Russia or China.
macmoontrotter 1 year ago 118
@macmoontrotter Unlike Russia or China though, most of the American troops are either in Iraq or Afghanistan!
nrjelley 1 year ago
not exactly stunning in light of the chinese, north koreans or the yemenis (you should seriously check their parades out!) but the rifle drills were pretty slick.
stick in a few abrams, bradleys and battalion sized formations and we'll have a pretty impressive display. question is where the hell in DC would such a parade take place?
fludblud 1 year ago
@fludblud exzactly we dont have roads that big or giant slabs of concrete for just parades its not practical and they are trying to show off what they have we dont need to show off the rest of the world knows

you think the Worlds lone superpower would have a good parade but this this is well

A russian or chinese or north korean military parade is better ! Long live to the Russian Federation !

When being saluted, one should return it properly.
fr8542 1 year ago
@Ytpoopy because most of your troops are deployed in iraq or afghanistan

Soldiers march like they're having the glasses of water on their heads, very shy :).

why does the old gaurd have red uniforms
are they related to great britain?
warlight2333 2 years ago
probably so. in the us military not much emphasis is on marching - except marines. for ordinary soldiers it is seldome done after initial training.

It not parade, is unpleasant to look. Look parades in Moscow Red Square and learn that such the present parades.

We should have real parades like Russia and China. Have the honor guards of each branch marching down Pennsylvania Ave. with some tanks and other military vehicles. Also have the air force fly some planes. That would be awesome!
teapartyman 2 years ago 2
I agree! Show some support for the troops, raise morale, the troops deserve a great big parade through DC or New York.
ccisbeast 2 years ago 3
We need more military parades. Serious.

lol does anyone see humor in the " I wish we could throw a big parade" comments?
It's hard not to laugh went we have this tiny parade compared to Russia or China
KillSwitchOnSteriods 2 years ago
It looks funny and not impressive like a russian parade.Sorry but true.
flankermr 2 years ago
One day I hope we can throw a really huge march.
Who knows when...maybe when a lot of our troops come home, so won't guess till like 2015.
But it really would be an awesome sight, better than any sports parade or anything we seen.
