I *believe* there is a selector switch that gives only 25% power so you can legally ride it in bike lanes in California. Check your local codes before doing so! That also is a great switch for downtown city driving, range extension, and letting someone try the bike out without killing themselves.
Doesn't need gears. Electric motors give full torque instantaneously, so there's no need. Plus the electric motor spins fast so gears are just added weight and a failure point.
