My orchestra is playing this piece and I'm sad that I cannot find an orchestral version anywhere! But this piece is so enchanting to listen to. We are working on all three movements of it. The second one is my favorite.
the piano is not as bad as you think it is. I'm currently working on it. It is very pianistic and flows rather well so that its not like lets say the hindemith sonata for trombone and piano.
it is pianistic, but it's not very sightreadable due to all the jumping around. if any of you are trombonists interested in playing this, give your accompanist time to learn it. i'm a staff accompanist and got this last thursday. we're to perform it next tuesday and this week is spring break. i have basically 3 days on which i can practice, due to my plans. that's really not enough time. fortunately, the ensemble is easy as long as the soloist can count and knows his part.
James C. Lebens on the Lebens, Eklund and Ewazen plays Ewazen. you can find it on Amazon or other website that sells cds it's a very good record it's on tenor trombone though.
Great job! Loved playing this piece. Great fun, and a nice challenge. Nice job by the pianist, too. I'm also a pianist that helped accompany during college, so I can appreciate the hard work put in by accompanists :)
I played this for my first jury at school this year and it was a great, though difficult piece. You performed it very well, though in spots you did some interesting scoops to the high register, though not every performance will be perfect. overall you did this solo very well.
great job. as mentioned already great sound. you do have a great low register. when i perform it i will put my videos up here to be graded by fellow trombonists. my senior recital will be all 3 movements of the ewazen sonata. and david uber's rhapsody in f minor. and cousins by herbert clarke. and a jazz combo piece. i got my work cut out for me.
you obviously have a stronger lower register, let that facilitate the mid/upper range more. could be the hall or recording, but i feel like your short/quick notes are sucked up, either put some space in between or lengthen those. great accompanist and performance, keep up the work!
hey man, nice performance... this piece is not the easiest (go check out visions of light, alessi performs it on youtube). your core sound is nice, i think you can open up the oral cavity some in your mid/upper range so that you darken up the sound a bit. also, blow through the phrases some more in the same range.
Very enjoyable - however you should give the pianist a credit in the description - I suspect he put a lot of work in to learn the accompaniment to this piece!
yeah i agree, it's a very difficult accompanist part. while i'm a trombone player and not a pianist, the bottom two lines on the preview of the score on Ewazen's site are very intimidating haha.
could someone tell me what movement this is?

The Diamond World is probably Ewazen's best work.
