WOW!! EVERYTHING STAYED THE EXACT SAME WAY WHEN THOMAS JEFFERSON WAS ALIVE IN HIS TIME. HOW COULD THOMAS JEFFERSON SAID "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL" AND HE WAS A SLAVE OWNER HIMSELF, DOESN'T THAT MAKE HIM A HYPOCRITE AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THE KIDS HE HAD WITH HIS SLAVES. I DON'T SEE WHY PEOPLE REGARDED THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THIS COUNTRY AS ANGELS, THEY WERE FAR FROM IT.
@jeanol1 ur quite ignorant to call him a hypocrite. Slavery was popular belief back then and if Jefferson fought against it, he would've lost all political stature and ergo no declaration of independence and we would still be under british influence. He foresaw the future which is why he said all men ARE created equal hoping that eventually slavery would be eliminated. He was obviously not racist as he slept with sally hemmings, a slave who he specially adored.
The cool part is that they let you take your well behaved and leashed dog on the outside tours.
We parked in the shade with the windows cracked for our pooch, did the 45 minute inside tour, jumped the shuttle down to the lot, and walked back up the trail with him where we spent the rest of the day doing the grounds tours.
The worst has to GB. You gotta read how Thomas slandered John Adams, truly a great man and patriot. At the end of his life, Jefferson owed about $100,000. He got his debts paid because Congress bought his books in his library. Adams died with more than 15,000 in cash in that days money, because he led a more austere life. TJ the greatest, gotta be kidding, Obama the worst? You havent read your history.
thank you so much for sharing this with all of us and it makes me appreciate even more the serenity i have in the seclusion i enjoy in my home. again many thanks and God bless
Slavery was a British institution that the United States was unable to immediately abolish. Slavery was a terrible thing and so was the War Between The States when over 600,000 of our countrymen died and hundreds of thousands more were wounded, maimed and died debilitating deaths years after the war ended. Jefferson recognized the dilemma the young country was in when he said of slavery, "We have a wolf by the ears and we can neither hold on to him nor safely let him go."
Come on now. Quit bickering, both of you. Jefferson owned and used slaves, that's a fact. Most of Europe was also built on the labors of slaves of all ethnicities for many hundreds of years; we are all descended from them. There is nothing we can do about this, and we must stop trying to better ourselves and accept our fate as victims. We are doomed to be bound by the past, so stop fighting it and get with the program. Thank you.
there probably is an artist's rendition of TJ and Sally buried in a old chest somewhere beneath the roots of those huge trees. I'm dying to know what Sally looked like. I wish there was a photo of her somewhere, but there isn't. I just imagine a flawless mocha beauty with full lips, high cheek bones, bright blue eyes and flowers blowing out of her jet black hair atop a Monticellan hill.
@redlion83 Such a shame you would choose music that was played at our worst president in history's inaguration to play in a video of one of the finest.
I live in Texas, and i am entering 8th grade this year. Our prinibal has a awesome program called the "School away from school trip". Its were we travel throuhg texas, all the way through the 12 colonies up to NYC, and then back. While in Virginia we visit monticello. My friend said it was awesome. But im more excited to see New York =D
I went to Monticello over 10 years ago. I felt like it was about 100 degrees that day and there were several hundred people there waiting to tour the estate. Beautiful place!
Thank you for offering this lovely video. What beautiful music you've put to these images. I just watched the PBS video Thomas Jefferson for the first time and really enjoyed learning more about this amazing man's life. I've added the video link to my blog. Thank you! 5 stars. :-)
That is they way it was back then. Slaves built the Pyramids, slaves built Rome, and they built monticello. As unfortunate as slavery was and is today, you cannot compare 2009 to the 18th century.
I understand what you are saying, but lets be honest and acknowledge the past and not ignore it, my ancestors built monticello. And thats not the way it was, it was how it was made to happen. I mean the people who took slaves and murdered them and raped their children were monsters plain and simple!!
I know its painful for you to think about what my great grandpa did to your great grandpa. I am not proud of that. I hate that part of American History. But we dont have to continue the hatred. If God can forgive us, then we can forgive each other, and should. I have black people in my family and I love them as much as I love the white people in my family. But hatred will make you a bitter person and kill you in the end.
5277407, it's a lot harder for decendents of slaves to forget because they are still suffering to this day. The pain that was suffered is actually passed on from generation to generation. The struggle and rasicm still exists today. It's very difficult to build something from nothing. As someone stated, slaves built Monticello (as well as most other great buildings) without pay.
I understand that, but my point was that with God, you can overcome and set yourself free from your pain and suffering. Otherwise you are still a slave to the people who died hundreds of years ago. Why carry that burden with you? or have a pity party? There will always be evil people in the world.
A pity party?! 5277407, hopefully with God's help, YOU will learn not make a judgement without having walked in the shoes of those who have suffered. It's easy for you to say 'set yourself free' as, to this day, you reep the benefits of my forefathers sweat and blood, continue to profit from things which have been stolen from Africa and continue to force your way into other countries to steal, kill and rape. In fact, not much has changed.
But that's exactly what you are doing yourself, pass judgement. I do benefit from your forefathers, but also from my forefathers, and you do as well. Praise God.
I am not passing judgement. I am talking about the facts, most of which you refuse to see and would prefer were swept under the carpet. I can see why, it's a trait in the character of yourself and your forefathers. And why do you keep on bringing god into it? Do you really think people can do whatever evil they want to, pray to God and then just be forgiven when they knew what they were doing was wrong in the first place? Wishful thinking. I will not be responding to any further comments.
You ARE passing judgement and are very ignorant. You know nothing about me or God, but wish to stew in your misery instead. Its your choice, I hope you find peace.
Hiddeous, considering we don't know much about these forefathers other than their infamous activity and even then we speculate. We, most of us, know that slavery was and is an abomination and hasn't always just been associated with color. That's how the Colonial elite of Europe and America justified themselves, though. By exploiting forensic differences and promoting their own twisted interpretation of the Bible. It's how evil operates, subtly tricking people into believing it is necessary.

It's the title theme to the movie "The Patriot" by the great John Williams.
When I started editing the raw footage, I was at a loss regarding the background music I wanted. When I sampled the main theme from this movie, I realized it fit like a proverbial glove. The transition near the end provides a perfect segue to the Jefferson family plot, and Mr. Jefferson's tombstone in particular.
I have been away for a while. How exquisite a choice you made for this piece. It was bred to visuallly tell the story of the architecture of Monticello and it's beauty. Thank you. Bravo!
