  • can anyone tell me what concerts these are from?

  • Quite unbelievable.

  • Check out Satori in Tangier for more insane soloing

  • 18 people gave up on playing guitar after watching this.

  • Yeah agree with Larrypopiel It's the second in this series of clips that's the reason I still find Mr. Fripp to be the best at his craft. I don't care who's the fastest or who's the greatest. Fripp's sound and style are incomparable, love him or hate him and God knows there are a lot of Fripp haters out there!! I'm a Fripp lover!! King Crimson albums keep their head rush. I've listened to them for over thirty years, and they are still spine tingling!! Led Zepp albums don't do that for me.

  • When you have guys like Vai and Satriani wanting you to come along with them on tour, when they pay homage to you when on tour themselves....well, no matter what anyone says, YOU are a living legend guitar player. You wouldn't even have had to hear anything he played to know that, but when you've heard KC or any of Fripp's other projekts you have just removed all doubt.

  • His playing style is very very particular. His right hand always florts from guitar body (He is lefty). It means that his lefthand mute technic and alternate picking skill are perfect. Does anybody play like that on earth ? His solo in LTIAP3 is extraordinary in the guitar history. Holdsworth, Vai, Malmsteen, if they are more technical than Fripp, they can't play like Fripp.

  • This man is a guitar genius and will never be understood.

  • 2:35 ROBERT FRIPP IS THE GODFATHER OF PROGTECHMETAL BLA BLA!! seriously!! he's "fripping" Spiral Architect and Ron Jarzombek are probably fans of him!!!!!!!!!! respect from Morocco.

  • Robert Fripp is genius, his own style, He´s a technician, i´m sure that he plays 24 hours of the day, He has control, no one like him.

  • @chloelivi

If memory serves me correctly Fripp once said in an interview that he is both tone-deaf and lacked rhythm. Still, much respect to him.

  • @DanteJoseCuervo He said he was when he first started, but he worked through it because, as he said, " Sometimes music so wants to be heard that it calls on the most unlikely people to give it voice". Inspiring.

  • for those who think he has no melodic sense check out "Bringing Down the Light"

  • King Crimson>Pink Floyd

  • In other words, that such and such is my favorite does not make him the best, that perhaps tells me more about the listener than the player (who is unrelevant in a way) or the music (which happens to be the heart of the matter)

  • Which is perhaps why he's not using tube amps and going for the old sounds. that by the by would possibly be safer ground in terms of $. As for his aversion to graphic recordings of the musicians, it may be that if you center your attention in da player, that distracts you from the music. And for those of you who think of music in terms of competition and status, I beg to differ, listening to this or that does not make me better, nor worse. And sorry for the typos. not a native speaker. 2/2

  • I cannot help but to be once again amazed at all the slander and insult between fellow commenters, it is despicable how their arrogance and self importance makes them loose their temper to the perceived inferiority of those who disagree. In the words of George Carlin: "Fuck everybody now that I think of it". And as foe da Fripp, he's always been trying to move to something else, not always successfully perhaps, but he tries to change, where others go for what they like, in sound, in music. 1/2

  • Fripp rules!!!

  • wow i can really hear omar rodriguez in this this guy gad a big influence on his playing

  • @antibalas79

Fripp was making music years before that guy was born.

  • @kenneyth yeah i know omar lol basically jacks fripp! but its all good you cant help who your inspired by itll reflect on the music with your own style.

  • @antibalas79 Yes, I hear Fripp AND McLaughlin influences in Omar's music, maybe that's why i like it!

  • taken out of context, they may sound off. Within the song, it makes sense.

  • Amazing guitarist. Called overrated by folks entranced by tired cliches and speed. He has speed, inventiveness, and immense creativity.

  • @bertonifilms He's got speed?, I thought he was anti drugs. ha ha ha, what is Belew on then?. Mo' seriously, you speak quite rightly about how he is perceived, me thinks.

  • Wank away, Robert. It's all just noise.

  • Comment removed

  • Fripp is the king. There is a reason that Satriani and Vai asked him to tour with them.

  • this is fucking shit

  • robert frippis a damn geniuss!!!! i have passed 3 hours today practcing his licks, based on some ollld methods!! it's kind of funny when playi-ng it!!

  • @BetterTasteThanU Do it then, mister!!!

  • Love you Robert. I wish that the digital effects could be bypassed to hear the solos from a guitar through an amp and not through gigs of pitch honking algorithms. Les Paul through a Fender Twin? Please?

  • @PhysicsForTheFuture Sometimes back to the basics is a good thing.

  • @Tumatan44 basics, like feces?

  • Adrian played on the prior Bowie Album: Lodger

  • Bowie's Album Scary Monsters with Fripp and Chuck Hammer has some amazing textures that opened the doors.

  • Why is it that Holdsworth and Gambale aren't mentioned in the same circles as Fripp. Its seems as if Robert could hang with those guys. Just wondering, Andy Summers did some things with him and he's in the Baked Potato crowd.

  • @Brianval Spot on.

  • Does anyone know the names of the songs?

  • not good, not the best... he´s the greatest of all times! Long live Robert Fripp.

  • this isnt a song is it?

  • @smittygs1 no is a jam

  • Like Miles Davis, Jeff Beck , Mr Fripp did not sit on his glory days of Crimson in the seventies. Instead he pushed the boundries of his instrument in his own unassuming and overwhelming way. Bravo et chapo

  • This guy couldnt hold a tune in a bucket !

  • @thegreyfox53 who's your favourite guitarist?

  • @thegreyfox53

One of the most ignorant things I have ever read.

  • he's good but still a cunt!

  • I live 7 miles away from Rob, no lies!

  • What a racket

  • (Posted by Youtube Stream for iPhone (yst.me) on behalf of noahzasurfrider at twitter)

  • No photo's ????? Fuck you !!!!

  • Could someone tell me exactly where on the Eyes Wide Open dvd this is from? I've also heard that this is bonus footage from a cd; which would explain why I haven't found it on my dvd.

  • @marcwormjim This is from the live record ¨Heavy ConstruKction¨ - CD 3

  • Flash photography can ruin the vibe.

  • ЛУЧШИЙ

  • What are the Name of that Solos?

  • The solo work starting at 2:36 is one of my favorites. Chaotic, precise ..... blasts off into the nether regions, then synchs up perfectly with the band. Awesome.

  • @larrypopiel Thats Fripps trademark style. If your a guitarist, try playing it...good luck.

  • The real joy in this is seeing the results that the videographer got away with. Fripp has a well-publicized aversion to photography of any kind, even OUTSIDE THE THEATRE....

  • Haha thank you for randomly inserting a Robert Fripp "solo" of Fripp stuffily addressing the audience about not taking photos. lol.

  • what is the first song? I couldn't figure out what it is :S

  • @mexicotaco0913 The first song is part of an improv from the Eyes Wide Open two-disc DVD.

  • Fripp!

  • Crap" that shit sounds Just like a fucken garage band smoking crack '

  • @frankiev1231 I know! Isn't it great!

  • Sounds like a lot of mushy shit to me..Maybe Im not musical enough. Or maybe some people want to hear something good here out of being fanatic fans of Crimson..

  • @Chris741113 I don't agree, this sounds alrite to me. Not fantastic though, except Part 2 of Larks Tongue in Aspic pt4 that part rocks. I guess though we know just how experimental King Crimson is, and of course experimenting only comes to success after learning from failure.

  • Robert Fripp really has an annoying attitude

  • @DiminishedTB

Agree, he's very impressed with himself. For example a timeless player like John Mclaughlin is miles above fripp in both playing ability and attitude. I just ignore fripp and let him fade into the sunset.

  • I met his mum in the video store once. Different.

  • He is killlllling me !!!!!!

  • I think he is the most important electric guitar theorician.

  • @FdA4099 Along with Steve Howe

  • Fuck me Robert Fripp.

  • Who gives a steaming pile what you think.?? Get off YouTube and learn to play an instrument... Only non-musicians would have the spare time to criticize what "Bobby" does... real musicians purely have time for critiquing their own music!

  • @SurbaSam Well you kind of just contradicted yourself if you are a musician and on youtube looking up other musicians, just saying.

  • For my two cents, I don't enjoy Fripp's sound or his choice of notes any more. I've always been a huge fan but the harsh digital sound and the chromatic soloing are disappointing to me. In this, the double-trio incarnation of Crimson (and also in the Projekcts), I reckon Trey Gunn plays the best solos. Get a valve amp Bobby, and ditch the pitch-shifter !

  • @93Zos Agreed completely! A Les Paul and a Twin would sound so nice. It also might be sacrilege to say that the Crimson records of the last decade have been flat sounding compressed programs too.

Not to be a luddite, but the band has always been about dynamic contrasts - and that doesn't just mean dead soft to crashing planets in one beat. It means the slow builds of Larks tongues.

I would dearly love to hear some of the angular, defined lines from the Starless era.

  • Robert Fripp doesn't need black makeup, Satanic imagery, or corpse paint to be an awesome musician.

  • Don't fuck with the King!

  • @goodoldrebel8 does this include me not understanding a word you say?

  • wow that guy looks out of place. Hes like dave thomas shredding on a guitar!

    it definatly rocks.

  • Look at the total person if your elevating Fripp into some "creative far beyond understanding" characterization. His persona is intentionally created. With "Moonchild" it's Sinfields lyrics and Lake's voice that make the song. The original group's still the best. If Fripp has himself imaged up to be some "Lincoln Center sit in chair on stage kind of player" then let him play for that type of audience which claps at anything and scream bravo every 5 seconds everytime a player scratches his ass..

  • i wonder if he wants a standing ovation or a sitting ovation

  • It's just a frickin' noise to me.

  • @jimmyhaigh1

You want to try and play it? I don't think you can.

  • @froggy556

I don't need to be able to play it to know that it is just a noise. Even if I was good enough to play it I wouldn't because why would I play a noise?

I'm a Django reinhardt fan. Now, he could play real music.

  • @jimmyhaigh1

I checked out Django Reinhardt, good stuff excellent playing, but I've heard Fripp play like that too, but not in King Crimson. KC is a band made of creative frustration and this represents!

  • Yes, He CAN Shred...!!!

  • What are the songs?

  • Amazing....

  • His solos here (on Fractured)..It's like some psycho-rat caught in a maze, but on some very strong speed. Anyone else know what I mean a little?

  • Moonchild is still an all time timeless masterpiece but it was Lake and the other members of King Crimson who need to get the credit, not Fripp. Who wants to watch him with his arrogant attitude and personality of a wet rag. I definitely don't want to positively reinforce that behavior.

  • @goodoldrebel8 pity you dont know the name of the other members. dont need to google them, I know.

  • @zagyex

I bought their LP's probably before you were born. You must enjoy being a Fripp boot licker.

  • @goodoldrebel8 Wow, you are older than me, so you must be right :)

  • @zagyex

You'll always be some adolescent a**wipe wanna be. You know nothing about the guitar. Your just part of the mindless masses standing their clapping like sheep.

  • @zagyex

You'll always be some adolescent a**wipe wannabe. You know nothing about the guitar. Your just part of the mindless masses standing there clapping like sheep.

  • @zagyex of course i know nothing about the guitar. I play the drums.

  • @zagyex Jaja, cool conversation your guys are having. Im routing for you :D

  • @goodoldrebel8 So Fripp, the only member who was one throughout, who wrote most of the songs; and added a huge amount of musical input to the project, doesn't deserve credit? I may not be the oldest person in the world, but i know a thing or two about logic, and certainly enough about music to know that you are full of shit. Sure Lake was a great singer, and a great bassist too, but he certainly wasn't as important as Fripp to King Crimson.

  • @ClockworkFacility1

why are you so compelled to be a fripp ass licker? Obviously, you're not a guitar player. You're just an anus licking 'fan' vicariously living your life through media hype.

  • @goodoldrebel8 I play bass in two bands and am starting a project inspired in part by king crimson, where i play rhythm guitar. You know shit all about me. I heard about Crimson from my Dad, not the media. I'm taught by a man who has a vast knowledge of music and an even greater repertoire. So, that's a big fuck you to that part. As to "why are you so compelled to be a fripp ass licker" i believe i already answered that in my previous post.

  • @ClockworkFacility1

Tell your father to expose you to John McLaughlin. Then you'll see how lame and trivial Fripp is with all his mindless nonsense. McLaughlin is still the mark by which all players are measured. Anyone would rather see McLaughlin play than Fripp unless your some dull normal bubble head. McLaughlin is also humble and personable on stage. What is this with this attitude Fripp has. He looks like one of those quiet 'postal' worker who goes 'postal' all of a sudden

  • @goodoldrebel8 Yeah sure, McLaughlin is great, he has the sound of a thousand bees sorted. But there's nothing trivial about Fripp. He's incredibly talented and uses techniques that have inspired me, and many many other guitarists. I refuse to compare him, but if we're talking about a standard by which other guitarists are measured, surely we're looking at people like Jimmy Page, B.B King, Hendrix, Harrison, and Clapton. Just my opinion, try to see the difference between your's and fact.

  • @ClockworkFacility1

You give too much credit to Fripp & not enough to the rest of the original band. The 1st album is an eternal artistic achievement. I still enjoy it as much as when it was first released. Mcdonald's sax, Sinfield's lyrics & everything he did & Lake's voice & bass not Fripp & his self proclaimed "Fripptronics". Page or Harrison at the same level as McLaughlin? That's good for a laugh. Stairway to Heaven & While my guitar gently weeps vs. Birds of Fire? Are you serious?

  • Opinions are like assholes; everybody has one. The nature of art is that, at its highest levels, it's a matter of preference. Van Gogh or Cezanne? Apples or oranges? McLaughlin or Clapton? (Who, incidentally, played "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"). You clearly have a hard on for McLaughlin and that's fine, but your comments and many others here only express preferences. Citing specifics like use of harmony, melody, and orchestration would be more likely to bring someone to your viewpoint.

  • @LedMGP

Obviously, your just an adolescent a**wipe, receiving 2nd generation music from your parent. If you know anything about the original King Crimson then you can understand that "Moonchild", "I talk to the Wind" etc. have little to do with Fripp's guitar and all to do with Sinfield's lyrics and Lake's voice. This is the issue, not some mindless adolescent discussion from limited life experienced children who got this music as a second generation hand me down from their parent.

  • @goodoldrebel8 Hmm, I thought your issue was "who's better", which I tried to explain is a non-issue in high art & music. Dunno why you went off on a cursing tangent.

  • @LedMGP

Your getting the wrong impression. I'm stating that Fripp doesn't appreciate his audience and without an audience where would he be. His insulting attitude is just a steaming pile of horse sh*t and who needs to give him a second of attention. Let him sit there without an audience or fan base and play by himself if that's what he really wants.

  • @goodoldrebel8 I feel quite appreciated as an audient. I'm glad he doesn't "sit there without an audience or fan base," and I consider it a badge of my being a fan to respect his sensitivities and leave my camera at home.

  • @LedMGP If I had read your commentary, I would not have bothered to write mine verbose, boring comments, you put it all so very clearly and briefly, that i'm rendered preemptively superflous. You are indeed quite right and without offending anyone, which is what angers me so much about commentary in general, people are way to agressive and i can't get why.

  • Comment removed

  • @alexmortland Actually, i took which guitarists were on the top of many lists and cut out the ones i thought were overrated. I'm not even that into Led Zep or the Hendrix Experience.

  • @goodoldrebel8 Despise Fripp's personality if you like (you wouldn't be the only one), but you gotta at least appreciate his honesty about it. He's a temperamental academic egghead sorta guy, and he's never pretended otherwise. As for his stage presence, well... I remember reading an old interview where he explained that while he had TOTAL respect for the beauty of Hendrix burning his guitar, Emerson stabbing his organ, etc.... it would just look silly if Robert Fripp attempted it. Make sense?

  • @alexmortland

I hear you and totally agree, yet I still tend to not overexagerate Fripp. All this off the wall expressions and anti-social antics that he does is just an artificial performance and detracts from any skill he may have. Giving me this aura about being so "beyond comparison" is exactly the act he intentionally creates. He is a high self monitor, don't let him fool you, but I agree with this as you said "temperamental academic egghead" image. It's just an image Fripp is aware of

  • @goodoldrebel8 Dude, from what I gather, you are DYING to be different in a world of people who listen to different, aka non-mainstream, music.

What you're implying is that Fripp CULTIVATES the academic image. Phbtttttt. Assuming you are right, all that means is that he has vanity. Who doesn't?

  • @TheStigsIndianCousin To classify and pigeon hole music is narrow in scope and I guess then its digestible for the mass debre of human exisitence. Anyway, whatever this theatrical performance, being a 'fan' is still idol worship. Your pseudo-analyis is adolescent in nature. Continue to be a spectator and live a vicarious life as a bootlicker.

  • @goodoldrebel8 Well, I didn't classify any music, but the simple fact is that King Crimson is not often listened to by Rihanna fans. Second, since this is real life, opinions do not have to vary between acute dislike (which you profess for Fripp) and "idol worship". For the record, I think Wetton was the best KC member of all time, so there.

Finally, and this is the last you'll hear from me, Exiles from Lark's Tongue in Aspic. The last part. Then come back and tell me Fripp is overrated.

  • @goodoldrebel8 An approach to music from a competitive perspective seems to me to be in a direction that at some point turns antimusical. Music is not about who is the best, but about what touches you, because we are unique like snowflakes ha ha ha ha, you see?. So if JM is better than RF, there's Frank Zappa saying Allan Holdsworth is the best guitar player in the universe.... 1/2

  • @goodoldrebel8 And I for my part would probably said it was FZ, but if you ask the younger guys they say Satriani, Vai Malmsteen. Way I see it, those guys turn it in to something in which music is somehow in second place to dexterity, some sort of sport. 2/2

  • @Stoner075B I hear you and agree with you her except about FZ. Malmsteen, Herman Li, Mark Morton, Paul Gilbert etc. are all the 'Alvin Lees' of today and actually I see that as a growth in the guitar world. Still, JM, Iommi and guys like that have stood the test of time.

  • @goodoldrebel8 malmsteen is fucking awful...

  • @migbee

Are you kidding me. When was the last time you were able to play "Far Beyond the Sun". Come on and give credit where credit is due. Of course I'm partial to american players but Malmsteen is one of the greatest.

  • @goodoldrebel8 I can't play it, but that doesn't mean it's good. He has technique and that's about it. No soul. No melody. Just shameless wanking scales and arpeggios.

  • @migbee How about that song he wrote about his brother who died? I think you should give Malmsteen more credit. He certainly has a better attitude onstage than fripp

  • @goodoldrebel8 Really? just how much of Fripp have you listened too?

  • Comment removed

  • oh my god, this stuff gives me chills it's so good. Robert Fripp really did write the book of metal back in the 60's and 70's and it took 20 years for everyone else to catch up. Black Sabbath and others way back when sound like little kids by comparison.

  • I liked Robert Fripp before he was popular... oh wait...

  • @PrimericanIdol ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha h....

  • Listen to the opening riff on Schizoid Man (1969) and then tell me that ain't metal! Case dismissed.

  • holy shit.............where's my orange barrel?

  • hey dont knock metal fripp himself said if he were a bit younger hed put on the spandex and play shred!

  • Great video!!! Robert Fripp is God

  • @BucksStudent- While most of the world was fawning after Peter Frampton & Elton John, people like Fripp & Eno and all that played w/ them were creating innovations music that were 30 years ahead of their time and the world still has not caught up. You seem interested in dating the inception of Heavy Metal and crowning a "father" of the genre...you're probably finding it to be a little more complicated than that. Metal's not my thing, but I give credit where it is due - many talented artists

  • @BucksStudent- While most of the world was fawning after Peter Frampton & Elton John, people like Fripp & Eno and all that played w/ them were creating innovations music that were 30 years ahead of their time and the world still has not caught up. • @BucksStudent - I'm 50 and was listening to these pioneers way back when....I'm so glad that you are looking back, asking questions and show genuine curiosity and have an open mind....gives me hope in an era that lacks it on so many levels. I was (still am) an avid follower of innovative, explorers in music. I'm sure you have considered this...but it really helps to put this in a historical context. (cont..)

  • 2:50 hahaah i like how he doesnt even look at his guitar, just lookin at everyone else to make sure they are doing their parts right

  • GENIO

  • At the time it was called progressive rock.

  • Guitarists usually sherd to show off while Bob seem to do it because music demands it. How he comes up with this crazy stuff is beyond me

  • There was only one man who i think was better than Robert Fripp, but this man is god of guitar and his name is Jimi Hendrix

  • Fripp came from Jazz... Free-Jazz -- to be more specific... Period...

  • I'm sorry but I still feel like The Beatles invented Heavy Metal. Hey Bulldog and Helter Skelter though Beatles flavored, are definitely metal songs. Just listen to the bass and drums they're very heavy. Harrison's guitar features the kinds of licks and riffs still used in metal. Even the lyrics are metal. Really dark. Not exactly ominous, but definitely heavy.

Perhaps un-evolved metal. A kind of primordial metal. Nevertheless imo metal.

It doesn't negate Fripp's place or talent.

  • @NolitaDenise

I don't agree with anything you just wrote, The Beatles did NOT invent Metal. Everything comes from everything, music evolves a new styles are born with new generations that take everything a bit further, The Beatles did not go in that direction, if anything, The Rolling Stones were much heavier

  • @NolitaDenise

    Blue Cheer, man.

    Summertime Blues.

  • @999manman

I agree, Blue Cheer needs a lot more credit. They are still the ultimate Parchment Farm is still great and as fresh as ever.

  • hahahha,i had uploaded that video, but i received a notification about copyright, but i was only a warning,i great to see it online again!!, thumbs up!!

  • This music reminds me of something like a serial killer.

  • what year is this from

  • This is awesome! Thanks for posting!

  • hells yeah!

  • Great video and thanks for posting.

Does anyone know what concert this was such as city ? Thanks.

  • 0ne of the world's brightest minds...

  • Fripp is really great but he doesn't wear his guitar strap high enough.

  • I feel silly listening to Van Halen now. And I love it.

  • Fripp owns all other guitarists easily, he's at the top of the greatest guitarists.

  • This guy is in my opinion, the most inventive and experimental guitarist of all time, definitly better than Buckethead LOL. King Crimson is my favorite band of all time.

  • @TheFigueroa007 Yeah, but when you add the NERD factor,it gets taken down a notch or three..........

  • I love how he looks like a high school principle but is actually an amazing guitarist.

  • Out of curiosity I tried to search for the bathtub pic and whaddya know.

"Fripp and toyah" on google images and voila!

  • Incandescent.

I couldn't think of any other word to describe his play here.

  • Listen to brian Eno's " Baby's on fire ". Fripps finest work. When we were kids and first heard this we knew the world had definetly turned.

  • When Robert Fripp actually looks at his guitar you know shit is going down.

  • @IAmMartinCollins ...LOL
