CPI does not include prices of food or fuel. The government plays with the items included in the CPI to keep the reported inflation numbers low. That is because S.S. cost of living adjustments are based on the CPI as are many raises in business.
Not exactly correct, but the reason is right It's definitely not about "the same market basket of goods" by a long shot. They just came out with a new report today that the CPI dropped by the largest amount in 61 years; the problem is they haven't been measuring the CPI the same way for 61 years. They can only measure it against the number of years that they have been using the "hedonic" measurements.
No it is entirely correct, The CPI had oil and home prices thrown out by Carter to make things look better than they were. Clintoon threw out more and came up with "core inflation" as a agimmick Completely and totally not consisent with reality. Inflation is an increase in the money supply which causes increased prices..........Gas for instance more than doubled in the 90's as did everything else....meanwhile wages as always lag way behind and are insolvent./
deltapunk21-rwruger said food and fuel, not homes and fuel; you got it right. They can't say the CPI dropped by the largest amount in 61 years because they haven't been measuring the CPI the same way for 61 years. They can only measure the drop against the number of years they have been measuring it using current methods. And it's not about just SS COLAs-it also allows them to write people off poverty rolls because the poverty level isn't adjusted to keep pace with inflation
they might not report inflation, but the FED sure does create it, and now its hurting the middleclass, and everyone who saves in U.S. dollars. Bernanke and his cronies are robbing the people of this country and the world, through the inflation tax that nobody talks about...exept Ron Paul or Peter Schiff. so get out of dollars, get into comodities like gold, silver, and what not.
Good video but one thing that should have been added to this is the fact that the Fed doesn't report the true inflation; just core inflation which leaves out pizza.

shayne8181-no, the BLS doesn't report half the inflation it should. They use "formulas" you wouldn't get away with on your income tax.
