Fyi,Almost all artists from the 50s had careers built upon cover songs or originals not written by them. Very few artists black or white, wrote their own songs. Those that did had limited success with their songs. Buddy Holly did have a couple of big hits with songs he wrote. Ray Charles had one big hit with a song he wrote, the rest were cover songs/or written by someone else. One other hit he was credited with co-writing but co-write is questionable b/c often the contribution was negligible.
