I absolutely love this video.Thank you for performing and posting. Wish the British Universities promoted the great British 20th century music as well.
Note to you high school kids making smug comments about playing this in high school:
I am a member of this band that performed in the video. I also played this piece when I was a junior in high school. Just because your high school band is playing it for UIL doesn't make you guys good, nor does it invalidate our performance. You are probably can't triple tongue the 1st mvmt., play 2nd mvmt about half tempo, play the 3rd mvmt out of tune and you really can't even comprehend the 4th movement.
@mydogfartsalot85 I didn't make "smug" by my comment. I wasn't bashing on your performance either, it was great. And to be honest, we can triple tongue the 1st movement, we can also play the 2nd movement AT tempo and our 3rd movement is in tune, thanks. And oh yeah, we can comprehend the 4th movement as well. I go to a magnet school for music, so it's not like we've never seen this level of music before. Regardless, good job.
Overall, I think this was pretty well performed. I'm not going to nitpick the details. However, it seems as though the majority of the comments are on the dancers. I'm sure they worked very hard, and for the most part they did well. BUT. This song is powerful enough to take you on a "journey" through the different feels/places of Scotland, and I don't think the dancers did much to add to the piece. I guess "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" sums it up pretty well. Still, a nice job overall.
I loved the dancers--thought they added a whole new dimension to the piece. I think the last post was, as the Car talk guys say, "completely unencumbered by the thought process." NIce performance all around!
haha, all of y'all are in University's playing this song...And i'm in high school and I get to play it in my band...I guess we're just that good haha :)
@kalilover1 Anyone could try to play it. Whether they should is another story entirely. My professor played a solo I was working on one semester for his faculty recital. As you might be able to imagine, his recital was a bit better than mine. Doesn't mean he was playing an easy piece or I was playing a hard piece. It does mean your a dipstick though.
@grrfink dipstick? what grade are we in? I didn't mean my comment in a rude way, they played it great so no need to try and defend them. And considering my high school is a magnet school for music, we'll play it great, so thanks for your concern.

Our Wind Ensemble is playing this this year. The crazy key in the second dance is INSANE to play, and the triple tonguing sounds frustrating to play. I enjoy the clarinet part throughout this piece though; it just takes a lot of practice
I'm one of the dancers. We were INVITED to preform with the band by the director. While we had some timing errors with each other & some parts may have been off for us, I really dont appreciate half the comments on here. To say we "ruined" the piece is incredibly rude. We were only doing what we were invited to do. Our school is smaller, but there's no need " consolidate". Please think before you post something offensive to those of us who worked hard for this performance. Thanks.
@MissKrystalKay I'm sure you were invited--else you would have been kicked off the stage. You have to understand that the dancers are ridiculous and seem to go about without any conceivable correlation to the music. Malcolm Arnolnd probably is rolling in his grave. Thanks.
@MissKrystalKay The execution of the dancing was good. This is not an easy piece to choreograph. I would like to have seen more footwork match the beat/rhythm of the music so it makes more sence. I knew a fabulous band director from Kentucky who said, when writing marching band drill, try to make it so you can "see" the music.
The dancers were really talented and it is hard for those of us who are used to "stand alone" music to appreciate a different way of expressing such greatness.
@MissKrystalKay are you not professional dancers? you certainly could have fooled me. There might be flaws in your performance, but nothing I would not expect from a top-flight troupe performing at short notice.
@doublechinboi hey did you manage to find any recordings? my band is playing this for a competition and we're only at the secondary school level... i hope we do well :)
@killertromboner haha, I'm terribly sorry about that! I play oboe, and have had the privilege to play this piece with my high school, but it definitely takes a lot of work to get the solos /just right/. xP
My complaint about the dancers is that they anticipated the music and weren't super together. I don't mind them being there, though. @xxDobikaylaxxlove don't pick unless you play horn, in which case go ahead. This isn't the easiest horn piece, and they nailed the beginning.
The ensemble is great but, sorry to say, I have NO idea why someone decided to mix this fine performance with dancers who while fine sure did distract from the music. Perhaps this school is so small that the admin's feel the "need" to consolidate? In any case, whomever meshed the dancers into this mix did them as well as the ensemble a great disservice. Nice job by all concerned, despite it all.
I agee with pluh1 but I'll go even further and say that the dancers destroyed the whole thing. The Wind Ensemble was brilliant but horns watch your intonation, very sharp at times. Oboe solo very nice. We perform this in about a month. I will show this to the class on Monday. Thanks for posting it.
The Texas honor band, Westrook Intermediate, is playing this song.

Man I love playing the bassoon, sucks when your band laughed at you during your solo but whatever xD

As a bassoon player, I can appreciate the 2nd movement. And the entire piece for that matter

The slow part of the second movement is just hilarious. I played this piece last year and this part always made me giggle.

That oboe solo was gorgeous. how....could you even... Like, it's an Oboe!
beautiful piece, but like everyone said, the dancer's were over shadowing and didn't do the piece justice. It's one or the other guys.

I agree to the fullest extent. I feel that if you're going to have a live band, don't ruin it with dancers.
I absolutely hate that.
we're playing themes from the nutcracker, and our dances class is going to be dancing too it....I'm not thrilled.
