Well, that's a matter of opinion. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages (Mossberg has the better positioned safety and bolt release, but the Remington is made from steel, not aluminium). Personally I prefer the ergonomics of the Mossberg over the Remington, and the fact that it's made from aluminium doesn't make it any weaker, in fact it makes it lighter.
@temporalparadox I guess this is true my objections, though, are that with a pistol grip the safety on a mossberg is rather awkward compared to the Remington which is much more natural IMO, and the steel vs. aluminum debate would have to go to aluminum because of the rust issues w/ steel receivers but I am a loyal Remington shot-gunner.

If you had to ask that question.... then you've never tried one. Very simply.... it's the quickest easiest was to line up your gun while keeping both eyes open and on target.

Jeff is correct the red dot sight works like a Heads Up Display, you keep a better sight picture with both eyes open and its easy. The 3rd infantry uses Eotec red dot sights on M4's and Shotguns.
I don't need a shotgun for home protection, just a sound file of that baby racking a shell into the chamber. Hook up a perimeter detection system to play that sound on a loudspeaker if someone gets near my house.

You're missing the point, this is about "Tacticool", and the 590 has that in abundance. Plus the heatshield can be practical. I use my 590 for clay shooting, and when you're doing a rapid-fire 30-bird driven shoot, it stops you burning your hand when you flip the gun over to reload it. Plus in the UK the price difference between a 500 and a 590 is about £40, which is pocket change.
@temporalparadox So I guess $45.00 for a heat-shield is the going rate? Just curious, what's the going rate for the 590. Also, if you keep the shotgun upright you can load the magazine and the chamber and not touch the barrel. Good choice on the Mossberg though props to you.
Yeah, you can hold the gun upright, but I find it quicker just to rotate the gun so the the loading port is on top. Driven clays are very quick and don't stop when your gun's empty, you have to be able to reload fast. As for the cost of a 590, mine was £450 but they're now £480. Remember though, we get hosed in the UK on prices, so over here it costs in £ what it does in $ in the US, plus our equivalent of sales tax (VAT - value added tax) just went up from 17.5% to 20%.

3 clay pigeon launchers are hidden behind a bush about 30 yards in front of the shooters (usual two people), these launch clays on a timer, not when you shout PULL! and the pattern is random. As there's not much time between the clays, you have to be quick on the reloads. Most people use traditional over-under shotguns for this which are quick to reload, but I like to be different.and use a pump gun, it's just more fun that way.
@temporalparadox Sounds like a lot of fun. With your plug out of your 590 you could theoretically go 3 rounds. That is if you have the time and hit the clays. How many shots do you fire before you reload? How much time do you have between clays? Do you and your partner call the shots? How many shells do you go through in a round?
Shotgun laws in the UK restrict guns to 3 shots only, mine has a full-size ammo tube, but it's crimped so it'll only take two shells (plus one in the chamber). We do have full-capacity guns here, but they are on a firearms licence, and you can't get that for just clay shooting.
The time between clays is about 4 seconds, but they come out in twos and threes. Shot wise we get through about 15 shells each per round (30 birds), and we do call out as to which shots we're going to take.

The restriction came in to force in 1988, following the tragic events at Hungerford (Google it). The British government did their usual trick, a knee-jerk reaction. They brought in a swathe of new firearms laws 'for the protection of the public', but we have a protectionist government who will ban anything if they decide it's for the greater good. Handguns are banned, self-loading centerfire rifles are banned, smoking in public buildings is banned... The list goes on...

Well, yes and no. If I belonged to a rifle club, or had private land to hunt over, I could in theory have any rifle I like, as long as it's straight-pull (i.e. you have to manually cycle the bolt after every shot). We can have AKs, M4s, FALs, all sorts, as long as they're single-shot only. However if it's used for hunting, the police decide if the calibre you want is suitable for the quarry you're hunting (you wouldn't be granted a 7.62mm for rabbits, only .22LR or .17HMR).
Well, there is, but you have to be quick with the bolt, there's no limit on the magazine size that I'm aware of. The general idea though is to get it with the first shot :p. We actually have a qualification that you need over here before you can go deer stalking, called the DSC1 (I think).
@Jeff3230 - I'm just curious how much you paid for the new shotgun? I just bought a new Winchester SXP Defender, 12 gauge pump. It's a great shotgun at a really good price. If you're going to put a flashlight on it, I highly recommend the TLR-1 Streamlight. I had to use the mag tube mount, but since you have the picatinny rail, you won't need the mag tube mount. I made hamburger out of a big Norway rat a week after I bought my shotgun. :-)

You're missing the point, this is about "Tacticool", and the 590 has that in abundance. Plus the heatshield can be practical. I use my 590 for clay shooting, and when you're doing a rapid-fire 30-bird driven shoot, it stops you burning your hand when you flip the gun over to reload it. Plus in the UK the price difference between a 500 and a 590 is about £40, which is pocket change.

@temporalparadox So I guess $45.00 for a heat-shield is the going rate? Just curious, what's the going rate for the 590. Also, if you keep the shotgun upright you can load the magazine and the chamber and not touch the barrel. Good choice on the Mossberg though props to you.

Yeah, you can hold the gun upright, but I find it quicker just to rotate the gun so the the loading port is on top. Driven clays are very quick and don't stop when your gun's empty, you have to be able to reload fast. As for the cost of a 590, mine was £450 but they're now £480. Remember though, we get hosed in the UK on prices, so over here it costs in £ what it does in $ in the US, plus our equivalent of sales tax (VAT - value added tax) just went up from 17.5% to 20%.

3 clay pigeon launchers are hidden behind a bush about 30 yards in front of the shooters (usual two people), these launch clays on a timer, not when you shout PULL! and the pattern is random. As there's not much time between the clays, you have to be quick on the reloads. Most people use traditional over-under shotguns for this which are quick to reload, but I like to be different.and use a pump gun, it's just more fun that way.

@temporalparadox Sounds like a lot of fun. With your plug out of your 590 you could theoretically go 3 rounds. That is if you have the time and hit the clays. How many shots do you fire before you reload? How much time do you have between clays? Do you and your partner call the shots? How many shells do you go through in a round?

Shotgun laws in the UK restrict guns to 3 shots only, mine has a full-size ammo tube, but it's crimped so it'll only take two shells (plus one in the chamber). We do have full-capacity guns here, but they are on a firearms licence, and you can't get that for just clay shooting.
The time between clays is about 4 seconds, but they come out in twos and threes. Shot wise we get through about 15 shells each per round (30 birds), and we do call out as to which shots we're going to take.

The restriction came in to force in 1988, following the tragic events at Hungerford (Google it). The British government did their usual trick, a knee-jerk reaction. They brought in a swathe of new firearms laws 'for the protection of the public', but we have a protectionist government who will ban anything if they decide it's for the greater good. Handguns are banned, self-loading centerfire rifles are banned, smoking in public buildings is banned... The list goes on...

Funnily enough, no, all those illegal guns are still out there, and thanks to our very lax border controls they keep coming in from overseas. The criminals are armed over here, but not the law-abiding citizens (if you applied for a firearms licence in the UK and put 'self defence' as the reason, it would immediately be refused, and you'd more than likely be blacklisted from ever obtaining a license again).
The UK is a nation run by protectionists, pray it never happens in the US.

Anti-gunners are always trying to put stricter laws in effect but, there are more of us than them thank God and our right to bare arms. Well, yes and no. If I belonged to a rifle club, or had private land to hunt over, I could in theory have any rifle I like, as long as it's straight-pull (i.e. you have to manually cycle the bolt after every shot). We can have AKs, M4s, FALs, all sorts, as long as they're single-shot only. However if it's used for hunting, the police decide if the calibre you want is suitable for the quarry you're hunting (you wouldn't be granted a 7.62mm for rabbits, only .22LR or .17HMR).

Well, there is, but you have to be quick with the bolt, there's no limit on the magazine size that I'm aware of. The general idea though is to get it with the first shot :p. We actually have a qualification that you need over here before you can go deer stalking, called the DSC1 (I think).

@Jeff3230 - I'm just curious how much you paid for the new shotgun? I just bought a new Winchester SXP Defender, 12 gauge pump. It's a great shotgun at a really good price. If you're going to put a flashlight on it, I highly recommend the TLR-1 Streamlight. I had to use the mag tube mount, but since you have the picatinny rail, you won't need the mag tube mount. I made hamburger out of a big Norway rat a week after I bought my shotgun. :-)
