The audition was with a director that Lydia knew personally. While warming up she noticed they brought in another young woman so she pulled him to the side and she realized that auditioning might not result in the part because the part had already been given to the other performer. She pulls the director aside and asks him if it's worth her sweating for a chance. He admits that there is not so she leaves with Coco who thought Miss Grant was afraid of her student competing for a part against her.
Yeah just watched this episode on cable. Its like living my preteen years again. Indeed Happy belated birthday Debbie and I always say" You want fame .....well fame costs and right here is where you pay for it in sweat!" I'm not a performer but I do freelance in television so the hard work principle is there.
1-16-2012. She's not blue. She's only 62. Happy Birthday, Mrs. Grant -er, Debbie. I just want you to know that FAME was one of my all-time favorite shows. Forget American Idol. NY School of Performing Arts is where you proved yourself.
I forget the context of this song. Did they both just experience a huge professional or personal disappointment? It is a song of loss, and regret, and hope.
@sentryguns123 Sorry you haven't had a reply yet.....but here it is: in this episode, both Coco and Lydia audition for a part in a musical (even though it's against the rules for Coco and it meant that Lydia would have to leave her teaching position). In the end, neither of them got the part.....and I guess this song is their way of consoling each other and assuring themselves of their self-worth. It really is a gorgeous song and the dancing is wonderful.
@DeeNice681 Well she is supposed to be her teacher!. Besides the truth is that Erica Gimpel was primarily an acting student at Performing Arts. I always thought that she did a great job on the show given this fact.
@DeeNice681 sorry but Debbie Allen did NOT carry this song. I have the opposite opinion. Debbie Allen is an amazing dancer and choreographer, but it is Erica Gimpel's voice as Coco who carries this song. Debbie Allen was the better dancer but was never a great singer, Gimpel was and still is.

Erica Gimpel did a decent job but Debbie Allen carried this song. My favorite Coco will always be Irene Cara though.
