I use this for bass.I run it into a '74 Acoustic Control 370 fullstack(solid state). My first impression of it was that it did very little. I tested it first right at a band practice. After an hour I could really tell the difference. Now not using it makes me feel cheesey. Nobody really takes about full potential. It is nice with flat ...

There was a big difference when he demo'ed the compressor before the OD so maybe most people have it after the OD in their chain but I don't think that it's "pointless" to reverse the order . I know several people who like the compressor in front . Maybe it depends on how specific pedals react to one another so it's always worth experimenting with the signal chain . There aren't hard or fast rules . You go with what sounds best to your ears don't you ?
...idiot ran a compressor backwards. a compressor evens out a dynamic signal, so whether you play soft or load it all registers at about the same output. in front of a distortion pedal-pointless, behind a distortion pedal decent.
ironic because this guy is so white when he talks he should be called the black shadow...
Probably THOUSANDS of guitar players who put compression as early in the chain as possible disagree w/ you both.
In general, you do *not* want to compress after distortion as it sucks all the life and tone out of the distortion (and the guitar tone, in general). You want to compress your signal and THEN distort it.
And if by sounding white, you mean he actually bothers to enunciate, well, A.) that's racist, and B.) since when did good diction become a BAD thing?? o.0
yeah, I think he spent more time saying things like "ahh" and "uhh" and "umm" more than he spent saying real words and playing combined. Still not as bad as Dan Agusto though.
Black Finger comp also uses SS circuitry in the signal path, the tubes warm it up a bit, but it would have come out better if they had made it all-tube. I'd put this in front of a solid state amp to warm it up, and I'd use it for vocals, but I don't want ICs and Op-Amps and transistors between my guitar and my all tube amp. I find this pedal overrated and overpriced for what it IS and what it DOES. I want to make my own ALL-TUBE opto-comp, or win powerball and get a fairchild 670!!!
Oh man, now you got me thinking......I sang through a fairchild 670 back in '99 at a place called blacklist studio in Colchester CT, it was actually an analog recording studio set up in a dead motorhome, or maybe a trailer, but anyway, it made my voice sound so hearty and rich and warm and powerful, and I had a bit of a cold that day too. It is truly a magical machine and worth the money IF YOU HAVE A RECORDING STUDIO. All I have is a corner in my bedroom with a tascam DP01 and some tube amps.
@punkeratheart most compressors use SS circuitry in the signal path. Yes even the tube ones. The black finger uses optical compression like most high end compressors. The tubes in tube compressors arent actually used for compression(although since it is a tube it will add slight compression) but the tubes are there for recovery gain/output gain. The SS version of this pedal is the same thing but uses SS circuitry for the output volume, just like the tubescreamer and many other stomp boxes
I know, I have seen the schematics, but it really wouldn't be difficult for a company (for instance, the effectrode compressor) to just replace the ss circuitry with more tube stages, but that is a magic formula for which they charge mega cash. I am in the process of building my own all-tube opto-compressor.The input gain AND the output recovery will be coming from ef86 pentodes, and the variable resistor will be a photocell. The parts were a total of 45 bucks.
I know, but I LOVE the tone of a pentode preamp, and particularly an EF86 preamp. I had a chance to play through a vox ac15 "handwired heritage series" recently, first clean with a strat bridge pickup straight in to the amp, then with a single stage 6AU6 flat booster (gain=approx. signal X 4) and eq'd it for a slight scoop, and my god, what a wonderful tone! Anyway, I have a silicon rated for 800 degrees, and so I can pot the tubes and protect them from shock, and the cab is away from my rack.
Hey idiot, look above, at the comment I was responding to. See? "Idivine3636" said "is there an electro-harmonix butt finger" and I responded to his joke with a joke of my own, and called it "brown finger". I guess it must have gone over your little head, but maybe you can learn to read one day, and you will catch things like this.
Do you know how to speak english properly by any chance? I think you meant "does it have bang for your buck", and yes it does, it has great tone and it's great for use on other instruments other than guitar.

the led and lamp are for the attack ratio.. they don't necessarilly change the warmth or top end.

whats the comparrison of this to th white finger ?
they both sound pretty good to me
but if anything the blak finger, fattens up the tone, a lot, but the white finger seems to make it more bright ?
anyone got any knowledge of them side by side ? thanks
Ashjaah27 2 years ago
The major difference is that the Black Finger is a tube compressor, while the White Finger uses FET/solid-state circuitry.

Damn, you did your homework!
I would like to second "overrated and overpriced" with Maxon's gear. I don't think I need to explain why :-P
Also, good lord, those Fairchilds can get expensive!!

its definatly out of tune
zakkwylde2690 3 years ago
i thought so, its never good when a pro channel doesnt even bother to tune up. Its like going onstage out of tune. Not at all good.
Sorry, im going on, I love this pedal
deadringer13 3 years ago 8
basically, i dont trust any pro channels but proguitarshop and EHpedals. hell, i like gearmandude much more than gearwire.

EHX, rather.

gearmandude is decent in his own right

Very powerful, very neat comp. If you dig these bad boys you should check out the Janglebox compressors, both the JB1 and JB2 are amazing!.
