Rutherford at his best. Smallcreep's day is definitely one of of the best progressive rock albuns of the 70's. Now, what I don't understand is how come such talented musician writing some comercial crap music from the 80's on..
Iggy, thanks for this..and don't forget, Mike is also a wonderful songwriter and conceptual artist..as "Smallcreeps Day", this song, and so many great solo works & with Genesis have showcased! The coolest bassist ever! rockin' his phenomenal Shergoold doubleneck bass!
Really liked Smallcreep's Day--much better than Acting Very Strange (although I have that album, too). My favorite song would have to be Romani, but they're all good on this album.
Recomiendo escuchar Snowman (con Genesis), The living years y At the end of the day. Es un genio total.

You would think that after this album, his first, that Mike's second album would have been equally good or better, but it's not. Of his 2 solo albums, this is the better one BY FAR. Mike should have kept this singer, Noel McCalla for the second album.
Even apart from the singing, the songs on this album are just much better than the second album.
This is the Best Rutherford Solo album...to bad he didn't think so at the time. He really put a lot of effort into this and it really "shined". It really showed how much of an influence the progressive side of Genisis Rutherford was responsible for. You listen to this and you can really SEE what he did for Genisis! Rutherford Forever!
Thanks again, everyone, for all the nice comments - thank you for forgiving me on my timing mistakes; I was really worried I'd get ridiculed for it. I'm so happy to see other Rutherford lovers out there! And I'm also sorry I didn't get around to the comments till now; I just finished the school year (I teach), and I'm moving... and getting married this summer! Whoo-hooo! :D
"every road" "overnight job" the list goes on.This album is great ! Anthony Phillips on keyboards! It's much more listenable than "Duke", though i love "heathaze". I like how Mike ends "moonshine" with bass pedals a-blazin.
for the record, i'm pretty sure rutherford collins are bi. i know they're both married to women, but there are a hell of a lot of pics of them where it's hard to deny it sure looks that way.
hello - I bought smallcreep as vinyl 1982 in Finland (I live there yes) as a cut out at 3 Finnish Marks. It was about quarter pound /40 cents at that time.
If you owe the ability to Look Tru Young Mike you would have seen , he was a like a thin willow tree working his bass-skills for Genesis he's been in for Years, while Peter was the locomotive of the band!
I am so glad this Mike Rutherford got higher and to the highest of Himself!
Take that !
The once-willow worked himself out to become the MAN he IS!
Always thought Mike's material on "Duke" was weaker than usual, and certainly not as strong as Tony's (esp. "Cul-De-Sac" & "Duchess") or Phil's (esp. "Please Don't Ask") ... then I heard Smallcreep's Day, which I think is a complete underated masterwork, and went "oh... that's why."
Mike didn't tour to support the album as he was busy recording and touring with Genesis for Duke. When Smallcreep's Day was released in the US in 1980 on a small label called Passport Records, it charted in the lower half of the Billboard 200. It also reversed the sides of the UK edition. The Smallcreep's Day Suite was on Side 2 whilst the individual songs were on Side 1 (I think the US tracklisting works better IMHO).
@floydgenesisnut I worked for Passport/Jem Records in as an intern in New Jersey in 1983 in the fulfillment area. I remember we ended up dumping the remaining 6,000 copies as cut-outs to retailers for a buck a piece. I think they sold on the street for $2.99 when it went out of print here. It was a horribly underrated album that just came out at the wrong time. Jem went out of business in 1989. At least Virgin kept it in the catalog and Caroline in the US have kept it alive.
Out of the thousands of CD's I own...this has always been one of my top 5. Absolutely incredible record with fantastic musicians -- including Simon Phillips on drums.
AMEN! It's so great to listen to this with headsets on, whether it's relaxing or dashing about town or driving in your car... SUCH a wonderful feeling!
I am so pleased that others out here feel the same way I do! Yippie!! :D
Very strong and nice material from Mike, it's got that very special and unique Genesis sound which makes it quite relevant for the old Genesis fans, he expands very well that prog sound with the new era, By the way Mike, could you hire Tony and Steve for you next record, in case it happens, it would be the perfect combination in your wonderful work !
Mike is a good basist ! and good rhythm guitarist , he is not very good at lead guitars and especially lead guitars for progressive related music is demanding , he is not underated as GENESIS are one of most selling bands ... He is not a lead guitarist..end of story! DAVID GIMOUR; ALEX LIFESON ;STEVE ROTHERY ; STEVE HOW ; STEVE LUKATHER are the greatest!
Yes yes, completely agree!

I sat next to Mike in the Fox in Atlanta prior to the Duke show. We talked for a little. All the guys in Genesis are great guys.

A funny song :) Basically it's minimalistic number (bass pedal, guitar, drums), but Noel McCalla's incredible voice makes it stunning.
