The greatest lesson in this film is actually not even related to action or the western genre. It is about TRUE FRIENDSHIP a very scarce commodity nowadays.
Great movie- stumbled across it starting on tv and only watched it for Irons, Harris and Mortensen, watched with my Dad and we loved it- got some good laughs too.
@SASPython i hate people like u. who think just because both are westerns they are exactly alike. Appaloosa is set in 1880s. RDR is set in 1910s. and the story and characters are NOTHING alike. Appaloosa is about 2 friends who are trying to bring a murderer to justice. RDR is about a single man who is forced by the governemt to track down 3 of his old friends and kill them to get his family back. how is that the same? Appaloosa and Red Dead Redemption are not AT ALL the same.
@calebinoutlook hate is such a strong word...especially for something as stupid as this. They are both westerns...they both involve badass cowboys...they both involve walkin around talking to random people in order to achieve something...they both got killing. They sound pretty similiar to me. and dont take it so seriously its just entertainment its not like i was offending em i said they were works of art ffs. + this was 2 months ago, + its just my opinion dont go apeshit at me...
@SASPython so every single western in existence is basically the same? cause they all (for the most part) involve the old west, cowboys, walking around and talking to people, and killing? thats so fucking retarded to say that makes something the same. thats like saying all WWII movies are teh same because they all involve WWII, guns, soldiers, etc.
its not an opinion. its a fact that Appaloosa and Red Dead Redemption are not alike except for the fact they are both westerns. thats all
@SASPython that isn't an opinion. its a fact that RDR and Appaloosa are not alike except for the fact they are both Westerns. that doesn't make them alike.
would you say that Green Zone, Hurt Locker, or Generation Kill are exactly the same as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or Medal of Honor? just because they are both about modern combat? no. so why would u say Appaloosa and RDR are the same
im sorry to keep dragging this on but i just bugs me so much when people think the way u do
@calebinoutlook i think we'll leave it at that i dont want one of those long youtube arguements cause eventually some smartass will say something and we'll both end up being wrong. ill just say i see what you mean but im looking at it in a much broader view, while you maey bee looking at it into more detail. Ill put it this way, i got the same sort of feeling i got wen i watched Appaloosa as when i played RDR, mabey its cuz its western mabey some similarities in character or watever, i dunno.
OK, I've looked and looked and looked. I saw a bunch of mighty fine Quarter Horses in this trailer, but not a single Appaloosa. LOL! I am also amused that a town, which appears to be in the SOUTHwest, is named for a very specific breed of horse which is from the Pacific NORTHwest. XD
Most of novel-to-movie conversion are good except for Twilight. And this movie is good as well. It really feels longer than it is. Short shooting scenes and long phase(s) awaiting them. Clint Eastwood and Ed Harris should make a western film together.
@Marcemath11 You mean, Red Dead Redemption looks like the old west. LOL!
This may be off topic, but I have yet to hear anything truly negative about Red Dead Redemption. I want that game! I can't wait to get my hands on that game! Do you recommend it, too?
insubstantial fop irons does a bad daniel day lewis impression here....a wide yawn flick...where nothing happens slowly...needed to be just 25 minutes long.unsuccessful watching. but good for irons, he gets a bit of pocket money for zero contribution and a bad accent.
please if you know a simmiliar movie because in the past i saw a movie of 2 guys that tried to kill him self and one shut hm in the arm o other that movie was awesome but i cant remember the name Sorry if my englesh is bad i am mexican :)
I really enjoyed this film. It's amazing how much work actually goes into a film just to bring the story to an audience, especially considering that just about everyone working on the film made nothing nearly to what they are used to getting payed to make a film.
if this is just one of those movies that you wanted to see, but never did. you should watch this movie because it IS as good as it looks. ed harris is a really good actor. the story line is good. very realistic clothing scenery weapons. good lines. movie makes me want to be alive back then and do this stuff myself. im 16 and i would recomend this movie to all ages. also see 3:10 to uma and open range.
I agree with you on all points except that the movie definately doesn't make me want to be living that time and doing those things. Then again since you're only 16 it is understandable.
And I definately do agree that this movie was great, and the characters were actually believable.
Really though, Rene did a great job as Allie French. I absolutely hated her in the third novel (So did Everett in the second). But as far as portraying this vacillating woman obsessed with being abandoned, and clinging to what she sees as safety, no complaints.
This movie was fantastic until it turned into the Renee Zellweger show. I mean WTF was that all about? This movie had a brilliant opening, the Marshall and the deputies getting wacked, then the bar scene "You pull on me, either one of you., and I`ll kill you both"...Fantastic realism, then all of a sudden it focuses on this freakish looking dingbat for the rest of the movie. Who the F did t his broad blow to have them sabatoge such a great opening? What an absolute waste.
the mrflintstone and blacktree argument on the previous page had me laughing like crazy. Blacktree,. u owned him. lol. this movie was great saw it last night with my girl. awesome...

Watch the film. Read the book. They took the symbolism of the Appaloosa horses out of the movie, but they're really kind of irrelevant. The books are more about Virgil mentoring Everett.
I have always been a fan of books made into movies because i like to watch the movie and see how they have changed it to fit what they think should happen.
I love westerns but prefer mine to be shoot em up type, not love stories. This is the first movie in a while I couldn't wait to get over with....saw the ending coming half way through the movie. I'd give it 3 ouf of 5 stars...wasn't much of a challenging roll for Viggo.
