  • oh.. so brutal.. .why man magprotest pag-au.. well, that's both sides rights... just no hitting men..

  • THIS IS TOTALLY POLICE BRUTALITY! Violation of human rights!

  • Dear UC Berkeley - You don't want to loss your bread and butter...do you? Golden rule, golden rule!

  • cop in the background filming.... lol trying to protect themselves with video... there is hundreds of other angles

  • @vicrattlehead07 A lot of these kids wouldn't have been old enough to vote for Obama. And it's not the administration that's been pushing for the tuition hikes - it's the universities having to make up for the drop in tax revenue from the states, as the recession has dragged on from policies and events that started underneath the Bush administration, & even Clinton administration, coupled with student loans/grants pushed to be cut by Republicans & some Democrats.

  • Yeah, stupid hippies, they never learn. Putting flowers in the soldiers' guns weren't very effective and it seems shouting "shame on you" has as much effect when the opposition is sporting batons. Next time they should've brought their own batons and guns.

  • @Radarmantro Ghandi ejected the entire British empire from India through non-violent protests and Martin Luther King revolutionized civil rights through non-violent protest. In fact 50 out 67 transitions from authoritarian government resulted from non-violent protests. The results of non-violent protests speak for themselves.

  • Those FAT PIGS look winded from all that brutality!!!!

  • Fucking pigs.

  • fucking hippies! It's not the 60's, no matter how hard you try.

  • This is really sad. People that administer the system are no different from the scums in Wall Street. These fat, greedy pigs are way overpaid.

I remember I read in the newspapers a Democratic lawmaker (that's right, a DEMOCRAT) told the media that he believes some UC Berkeley professors are far from reality. One professor is able to take PAID LEAVE while working on his novel. This is fucking ridiculous! I still support Democrats, but they need to learn how to say NO to some professors.

  • Why don't they just get their education on the internet from Bill Gates for free? Or don't they like Bill's educational funding for YouTube? Or is it just the lack of pot smoking from the internet education that makes them sad?

  • @LibertyJedi Reasonable people understand that the education is not free. However, the tuitions are getting too high!

And let's not forget that, after spending all the time and the money, you might still struggle to get a good job with a college degree.

Students have the rights to complain when the system is CORRUPT!

  • poor people beating up poor people

  • It's UC-Berkeley. What do you expect? you want it free? huh? are you smart enough to garner those scholarships? maybe if you stop smoking pot and study more, then just maybe you will be smarter than the Medinas at Stanford.

  • These cops need shot.

  • @vicrattlehead07 I'm a lib-tard and I even think this is absolutely nuts. I had a good rant up at the top of these comments...maybe you would agree with what I had to say.

We are all in hard times. What do they expect? They money needs to come from somewhere. But hey, I guess as long as they get their diploma they dont mind if UC goes bankrupt in 4 years, right?

  • 1) As much as I understand NO ONE likes tuition hikes, we are in HARD ECONOMIC TIMES. Things like this happen out of desperate attempts to keep our wonderful CA education system going. What do these students want? Their schools to go bankrupt 4 years down the road? Well, hey, as long as THEY graduate, no big right?

    2) UC was too expensive anyways. Yes, I could have afforded to go there, but why? UC's huge tuitions have

  • 3) States have maintained the proper view of a University (better at least) than UC. Smaller campuses, smaller classes, more pro-active professors, and an equal education to UC on half the endowment and a fraction of the tuition. I mean, really, what got lost in translation that so clearly says State is sub-par to UC? I can walk out with the same Major as someone at a UC. What makes a UC diploma better than mine? Might I add where State graduate students go? UC!

  • Comment removed

  • Internships! i have sat in seminars at UCD and elsewhere only to find out the teacher was A) and intern B) IN graduate school coming from a State.

So are you not paying UC fees to be taught by an intern from State? ( I am fulyl aware this is not always the case.)

So i am done with my rant. i just think that (although i feel for them and understand how frustrating it is) many UC students need to get over themselves, their pretty UC tags, and look elsewhere. Otherwise, deal.

  • Hopefully California breaks away from the rest of country then sinks drowning all the morons who live there.

  • @313Cerberus You are my hero.

  • @ladytamano How do you know they work "multiple jobs"? I hate how our lovely college students think they are entitled to not listen at all to authority. Just move back 3 steps and stand there all you want. But no, you have to cause a scene and scream 1984. Protesters, at least on the left, never learn.

  • looks like the riots from Greece. Socialism doesn't work, wonder if Berkeley should drop that from their required belief system. But then, entitlements is indeed the way of the democrats, people get miffed when their entitlements are played with.

    .

  • too bad they can't use pepper spray, might teach them a lesson

  • @johndoe1880 What? That they should practice their first amendment right?

  • G.I. BILL!

  • The government of Maryland has made it a felony to video record police officers performing their duties. That's right - a felony. Had this video been recorded in that state, the responsible party could be sent to prison for years. Just want to make others aware that big brother has reared his ugly head in Maryland. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

  • Learn from the world.. Look at student protests in Iran, Bulgaria, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile... If you're going to protest.. do it right... do it like you mean it... do it violently.

  • UCB Chancellor Birgeneau Loss of Credibility, Trust The UCB budget gap has grown to $150 million, and still the Chancellor is spending money that isn't there on expensive ($3 million) consultants. Contact your rep in Sacramento Now! Save the money for UCB classes.

  • doesnt look peaceful... looks like the students movin on the cops

  • Excellent video!

  • look at all these whiny kids. Figures they would be at a very liberal school.

  • @danwk7 the fastest way to make a whiner of anyone is to threaten their wallet

  • What were these students trying to accomplish? Why do they keep trying to shove past the cops?

It seems retarded to me that they keep screaming "police brutality" when the cops are obviously only trying to keep them back..

Then again, I don't know the situation - where were the students trying to go?

  • @folkmusic1991 You have to understand the reason college tuitions are so high. They are so inflated because the government will loan kids an unlimited amount of money to go to college.

  • Go forbid those Californians pay for their college with their own money.

  • What kind of idiots goad the police into physical conflict and then scream "police brutality!" when they push back?

Fucking moronic, if you ask me.

  • and if we saved $236B by deporting all illegal immigrants, the UC schools could be tuition-free

  • Being a riot cop on a liberal campus looks like a lot of fun. Liberals spend their way into bankruptcy, have to cut back, liberals protest. Protesting the stupid by the stupid. Hilarious.

  • good to use black cops to keep back marxist, white students!

  • These assholes are taking up the spots of those whom have saved enough money or are willing to work while in school. They will make better employees than these communist liberal Obama shit heads.

  • ron paul 2012 freedom vote

  • crimethinc 2012, REAL freedom

  • UPD employed some particularly hurtful tactics there. It was a bit much for them to push the protesters back when they were already off of the property and not causing any sort of a riot or public hazard. To those people commenting on this video and saying that this is a direct effect of a n inefficient and unbeholden government with not will or ability enough to invest in social priorities I stand in strong agreement. The state assembly and the governors administration have become entrenched.

  • i really hope these protests will extend in all the usa....in italy protests against cuts of money to school had succeed very well, but i think in usa will be more difficoult let hear our voice...

  • @darklordleganmaximus It has nothing to do with Rep. or Dems. it has to do with the fact that the Gov. is not for the people anymore. White black or whatever it is about injustice and that is it. We lose and the people who have set up this corrupt system gain. This is a concerted effort to not educate people so they are easily controlled period. We have to forget about Rep. and Dems. doing anything except for what the have already done and that is ruin or country and or freedom. Hope this helps

  • HAHAHA! Im SO GLAD all you obama youth are getting your fees hiked. You socialist morons..what did you think? Did you think a bunch of democrat-run schools would cut their own salaries? Hahaha...you were duped! You stupid kids vote democrat and seal your own doom. dumbasses

  • The only good commie is a dead commie!

  • What a foolish protest. I don't know if this is logical to anyone, protesting the increased tuiton by preventing around 3000 students from attending class. I'm a UC student as well, but the issue is the money needs to come from somewhere, and low-income students will have CAL Grants match the increased fees 100%. The cost of this protest to the students who payed for a day of education they never received, and the fact that it occurred after the vote on the increase make this feel like a waste.

  • commies

  • Obama once said lets TAX people into a recession so that there is a bloodbath, so that the UNIONs can live in luxury.

  • flawless logic

  • Next time bring plenty of pepper spray, and spray it in low under those facemasks. That loosens 'em up a bit. Then have 4 people pick up each fence piece and charge those punks. That crowd could've taken 3 times that many cops with ease.

  • Then if I was in power I would ask the military to come on campus and open fire on you protesters

  • These cops want to beat people up so bad, they invent a reason to do it. As if it mattered whether people were 4 feet further back from where they put that stupid fence? One punk cop kept taking cheap shots with his nightstick through the fence. Where I'm from that earns you a beatdown.

  • i believe in order to truly make your point, and actually attain fair and affordable education there needs to be a complete boycott of the university system. i literally mean all students should take a semester off, work, enjoy life, save up some money. then they'd have to give in. some money is better than no damn money is how i'd view it.

  • Change you can believe in, where is Obama?

  • The best solution would be to recall arnold or fees will continue to increase. Our state will suffer in the long run in uneducation. It's time to really stand up and unite and continue to protest and our right to education.

From the CSU Stanislaus, peace to all my brothers out there and continue the struggle, dont let the system push us around like this!!!!

  • Those cops should be in jail.

  • i think america needs more protests

we are too submissive to authoritative powers and we blindly follow rules

  • Fair Play to the participants.... Guys...Well Done.... Really !!!! Takes courage !!! Big hello from Ireland !!!!

  • . Read and inform yourselves from many different media sources on all sides and be present on the front lines .Then make an informed stand if you chose. I find it terribly sad that anyone could be so inculcated by the very structures which act as oppressive forces against them that they could believe ( whatever opinion they hold of student occupations) that the police brutality of the last few days is acceptable under any circumstances. It Is Not!

  • Having a fire alarm pulled in the middle of class, section, or exam impairs education. Preventing thousands of students from attending class is detrimental, and contradicts the supposed cause of the protest. It is NO PERSONS RIGHT TO PREVENT ME FROM TEACHING OTHERS, OR TO STOP ME FROM ENTERING A LIBRARY! The cuts and tuition hikes are terrible. We are on the same side, but these protests are misguided.

  • But beating students and making school to expensive for a average working class family, isnt a violation of the same rights you put up in your arguement. How do you propose change without direct action? Where has this lack of action gotten us so far?

  • The incident with the police is irrelevant to the purpose and action of the protest. Justified or not (you can determine of excessive force was used) I am debating the logic and efficacy of the protest. Further, if you feel that your rights are being violated, it does not make it ok to then go ahead and violate other people's rights. The protest should be directed at the policy makes who do not have their hands tied, that can actually increase funding so cuts and fee increases are not necessary.

  • I hate to say it but protest are very effective. They gained us workers rights. They helped speed up the withdrawl from Vietnam. And they are the reason the french and so many other countries have governments that work for the people and not just the system. Now these protest have happened, theres international pressure on UC to make actual change. So I would say it might be an inconvienance to you but, at least they are letting people know the system is screwed up.

  • @ticklemetesticles the school is a private entity; they can charge whatever they want. its the system which looks to it and say "oh look, Berkley, lets hire THAT guy!" that gives it any power.

IMO, everyone just go to public schools and demand better teaching practices. What i dont understand is that facts are facts. What makes something MORE TRUE at Berkley and LESS true at a state sponsored school?

wow i just promoted state education... ew. Fuck the board of education anyways. RonPaul2012.

  • What else do you expect these people to do?

  • Where the strike needs to be targeted is toward levying taxes from the citizens of the state to fund the institution, or convince the government to divert more funds toward education, if we want UC to continue to be an academic standard of excellence. The protest attacks the wrong institution. As a GSI, this simply disrupts education, and harms the University

  • I really don't understand how this protest is at all effective. The University simply does not have the budget to meet the demands. The state has been divesting itself from the UC system for years now. How can you make demands to both not raise tuition and not make cuts? Ultimately, this institution belongs to the people of the state of California. Apparently, they have decided not to fund the university. Of course, this is terrible...

  • Big men hitting protestors with clubs... they will get theirs sooner rather than later the way things are going.. This is America right?

  • This is why the highways in Texas are crowded with Californnia plates with all the economic refugees here looking for work. These parasites have drained the California until there's nothing left for businesses or working people but to leave. There's work here for those who want to work but these fools need to stay in California and keep protesting.

  • if you're at a protest and you don't want to get hit by police, there's a pretty simple formula: move when they tell you, get that angry look off your face, don't scream at them, and for christ's sake don't push back at them like the people in this video. i don't like cops any more than the next guy, but they have a job to do and don't have time to politely reason with every undergrad who is so excited to be a protester that he can barely wait to get home and masturbate to his own self-image.

  • Cops have no right to physically hurt someone because that person says something they don't like. These cops were thugs and they should be prosecuted for assault.

  • nut up you pussy.

  • You're the perfect example of why we need more funding for education. At least for typing lessons.

  • no, i meant nut up. grow a pair. internetz tellz all.

  • You, who are commenting with profanity and nonsensical insults while hiding behind an anonymous username, are telling me to grow a pair? That's the pot calling the kettle a wimp.

  • mr chives, if I may, where is the many how why mr. facetious time machine of splendor?

don't take yourself too seriously on the youtubez, I'm just busting your balls.

  • This comment doesn't even make sense.

  • 1. Those cops are tough

    2. Those cops are not brainwashed

    3. Those cops probably are good parents.

    .....JK (just kidding)!

  • The students have the right to protest under the First Amendment!

    Shame on you!

  • Comment removed

  • @Kazu1193 Except when they are blocking students like me from getting to the classes that I am paying thousands a year to attend

While I am not opposed to the tuition hikes and budget cuts -unlike my fellow golden bears I understand that we are in a crisis and that as a public university we are not self-sustainable and rely on tax monies - I respect my fellow students rights to protest.

But, their first amendment rights end when they encroach on another persons rights. Like me getting edu.

  • @Kazu1193 Yes, they are allowed to say what they want, they are not allowed to rush at police officers.

  • @Trimbler00 They are allowed until they breach the bill of rights. That is everyones personal arm space.

  • no one was shot you frakin' retard

  • Are you saying the police didn't shoot rubber bullets into a peaceful crowd?

  • instead of wasting your time doing a non violent protest, you should have done a hunger strike. thats how you really fight the power and stick it to the man

  • mmm. good philosopher. "All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason. "

    -Immanuel Kant

  • Dandelionpaws i could not have put that better myself. I support those people out there. Wish i was there with them.

  • all the money illegal aliens receive from social services should be used on these colleges instead.

  • when the police say back up and move they need to back up. the police tried to move them, and when the protesters fought back to "hold the line" or w/e they got what was coming to them

  • Make yourself a mental note: find out what "marxism" means.

  • isnt that from sociology, carl marx right?

  • That is very interesting to observe the situation in US from Russia.

Do you really think that the US government needs to spend anything on the national education when it can easily attact specialists from Russia, India and China? Green papers solve problems.)))

  • So you want to force people to join your protest? Very enlightened.

  • Making higher education inaccessible compromises our society's future and security. Young people have to choose between paying rent and buying their school books back in the mid-west. This is an attack against a major pillar of our civilazation. California is at the frontline of a very sinister threat that endagers all of us. California students could become a beacon of hope for young people all over America. Shine the light brightly enough and we will all support you.

  • Yet they barricaded themselves into a building where 3,800 students attend class. I'm going to guess that many of those 3,800 students want to attend class despite the fee hike and can't because of this occupation making this another type of violation of their right to an education. There are other methods to protest that don't affect the student body as severely.

  • The students have a reason to be upset but you never never touch a cop, especially in a situation like this. The cops are doing there jobs here. The beef is with the school not the LEOs

  • A.C.A.B.

  • ACAB

  • Let the students taste the tax hike by the elite establishments. I have no pity for them as they are the ones that support Obama!! There's no winners in communists!!

  • But in The US the HIgh education is already privatized, the Fees are high and corporations are the real owners of the System. What else do they want to privatize more?

  • aah europe its the same. too...

  • yes and no. 4 or 5 years back, when tuition fees where introduced in Germany (right, before, there weren't any) there where huge demonstrations for weeks, thousands of people, and universities had to remain closed for quite some time due to "student strikes" and blockades. still, I don't remember ever seeing the police hit people...

of course, the tuition fees came anyway...

  • student protests global!

in germany its the same like this.

its your bank! its the politik! its the industrie....

    global connexion!

  • These pictures could easily come from Russia or China or pretty much any part of the world. Then, of course, everybody would be complaining about the lack of human rights.

  • By the way, the main tools of American "democracy" - zombie TV, a police club, napalm...

  • democracy ;)

  • Disrupting class does not equal violence. Is it fair that the UC adminstration cut the school year short to get some meney, even though they could have easily cut elsewhere?

The protesters are making a statement. We will not stand for the privatization of education. The police clearly did not respond appropriately.

  • Come on people, you guys are disrupting class and getting in everybody else's way. Can't you guys use more peaceful methods? They're raising tuition, not like they're violating your basic rights. How would you like it if i started blockading your house?

  • I heard students repeating hold that line. Cops come push students holding a line,as the cops are telling people to move back, there is no effort made to move back, just screaming students. If done what cops said to do,there would be no problem,Look again and you will see what im talking about.

  • if cops tell you to stand back, then just listen and stand back

  • The illuminati control the schools, the best way to deal with them is to boycott school for a full year and no one go, otherwise the elites will win, they have been forcing pay increases throughout the decades. Alumni comes from Illuminati, meaning light, 13 Evil families run the world. they control the all schools, gov., courts, corporations, congress, all global leaders, they only worship the devil, Vatican is part of it.

  • Monday, we should take the Life Sciences Building!

  • Our country's security rests in the integrity of its citizen's education. American higher education is broken. It's time to change it.

  • Wow surprise surprise, the fucking liberal hiding behind the 1st amendment......wuts peacedul about heckling police who r doing their job, wuts peaceful about pulling fire alarms in classrooms and making students miss class, they cost the university and the city of berkeley a shit load of more money.....good fucking job, they made the situation worse

  • stupid government finance system ruins education for students~~~

  • Solidarity from a CMU student mass arrested at the G20 in Pittsburgh

  • Is it rioting, protesting or using excessive force via protesting? There's always going to be a crazy group in crowds.

  • The only crazy shit I see is 3 cops (2 black, 1 white) taking pot-shots with the batons for ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING REASON. Are they MORONS ? - they have at least two of their own using cameras as well? They have to be the three most foolish cops in the country right now - and NO BEER SUMMIT FOR YOU ASSHOLES.

  • people are definitely spoiled brats for wanting their classes to be cut, to graduate on time, and to have their money not be wasted.

  • I wasn't a part of this particular protest because I felt it was ineffective. However, the actions of the police are clearly unwarranted. These students have every right under the first amendment to gather and exercise their right to free speech.

Also to those saying it's trespassing. Forgive my ignorance, but isn't the campus public property?

  • And not only that, the Supreme Court recently ruled that NO college may enforce specific designated areas where one can only protest, protestants may use ANY public gathering area anywhere on a campus (and obstruction or interference with classes or the normal ingress or egress

  • between classes - such as a stairway or hallway - was further delineated in the decision, that the protestants may not "...enter a classroom or other area where a class is being conducted, as in a specific are for a finite time period, such as by a shoreline for a biology class..."

  • No they are not. You do not know what you are talking about. Again.

  • Indeed they are. That school is the property of the State, when the state says to move, you get the fuck out of dodge. Ya it sucks that fees went up, deal with it. Thats life. Life isnt fair. You adapt and overcome, not cry like a little bitch.

  • You may be saying that because the increase in tuition price does not apply to you. That's fine. Just think about YOUR reaction to increased taxes.

  • Actually my fees did go up, and to be honest with you, so have my taxes. Check....and mate.

  • The state is supposed to represent the people. The people of the campus and the people who pay for it through taxes. So they have every right in the world to be there. Since the government is ours and, accountable to us. The law should be used as a shield held by the people against the government. Not a sword wielded by the government over the people for there own good. What was it our founding fathers fought for?

  • yeah.. before you try to sound smart, you should learn how to write complete sentences.

  • Im a product of public education. Which is why I think there needs to be more reform. Most everything I learned I had to learn on my own. So Im sorry my punctuation doesnt meet your standard. I thought complete sentences started with capital letters? I always thought intelligent people would question ideas. Rather than attacking grammer.

  • I hope things can turn out for the better, thank god for out dedicated professors.

  • yep, your right

  • thank god for these students!! God bless them!

In the richest natiion in the world, in state where the elite think nothing of $400+ bottles of wine, access to higher education is being restricted, privitized. Does anyone think CHina, India, the EU are reducing the number of there citizens who can attend a univerisity? National suicide!

Since 1968, after decades of progess ,the US is a nation where the rich eat first, with wealth/income disparity like no where else in the deveolped world

  • its freedom but they are wasting peoples time and money who needed to attend class -.-

  • The protesters are a bunch of spoiled brats.

The cops(campus?) need better riot control training. In the National Guard they taught us the proper way to handle these situations. After Kent State there was no desire to see dead college students. We were taught that the baton could be turned into weapon of deadly force and taught how to use it properly.

That said these guys looked out of their element, nervous and scared.

  • Your opinion is sadly uninformed. The budget crisis at the university has nothing to do with "giveaway programs" that they are being forced to pay for. It's a much bigger, much more complex issue about CAPITALISM. So no--it has nothing to do with socialist policies, but the threat of privatization of their public education. I recommend you read into it before reciting some random anti-socialist garb on a video completely unrelated to your point.

  • Alas, it is the result of California's budget crisis brought about by their overspending, largely to fund some of the nations highest welfare and social benefits while taxing businesses until they've left the state while real estae vaules fall. I need only drive down any Texas highway to see the economic refugees with California plates to understand where California has taken itself..

  • I find it hilarious that you have "Texan" in your name and said the cops need bigger sticks. You certainly live up to stereotypes.

  • The US democracy in action, they are spending billions of dollars to do the same in Iraq and Afganistan.Shame....

  • They are just playing to the cameras.

  • i thought, it's a country of freedom!!!

  • Looks like they brought in cops from communist china and Angola.

  • Umm does anyone notice the officer beating one of the kids in the front... How is that right???
