1) As much as I understand NO ONE likes tuition hikes, we are in HARD ECONOMIC TIMES. Things like this happen out of desperate attempts to keep our wonderful CA education system going. What do these students want? Their schools to go bankrupt 4 years down the road? Well, hey, as long as THEY graduate, no big right?
2) UC was too expensive anyways. Yes, I could have afforded to go there, but why? UC's huge tuitions have
made it so only higher and higher classes can join them- in a sense, privatizing them. All to subsidize research for companies. UC has lost sight of what a University is supposed to be. Its a machine now. Take em in, take their money, pump em out, repeat.
2) Because its such a machine the education quality goes down. No one would like to admit it, but UC's education is fairly...average. Hundreds of kids per class, interns, rarely seeing a professor 1v1... Students arn't special.
3) States have maintained the proper view of a University (better at least) than UC. Smaller campuses, smaller classes, more pro-active professors, and an equal education to UC on half the endowment and a fraction of the tuition. I mean, really, what got lost in translation that so clearly says State is sub-par to UC? I can walk out with the same Major as someone at a UC. What makes a UC diploma better than mine? Might I add where State graduate students go? UC!
Internships! i have sat in seminars at UCD and elsewhere only to find out the teacher was A) and intern B) IN graduate school coming from a State.
So are you not paying UC fees to be taught by an intern from State? ( I am fulyl aware this is not always the case.)

What a foolish protest. I don't know if this is logical to anyone, protesting the increased tuiton by preventing around 3000 students from attending class. I'm a UC student as well, but the issue is the money needs to come from somewhere, and low-income students will have CAL Grants match the increased fees 100%. The cost of this protest to the students who payed for a day of education they never received, and the fact that it occurred after the vote on the increase make this feel like a waste.
Next time bring plenty of pepper spray, and spray it in low under those facemasks. That loosens 'em up a bit. Then have 4 people pick up each fence piece and charge those punks. That crowd could've taken 3 times that many cops with ease.

i believe in order to truly make your point, and actually attain fair and affordable education there needs to be a complete boycott of the university system. i literally mean all students should take a semester off, work, enjoy life, save up some money. then they'd have to give in. some money is better than no damn money is how i'd view it.

Having a fire alarm pulled in the middle of class, section, or exam impairs education. Preventing thousands of students from attending class is detrimental, and contradicts the supposed cause of the protest. It is NO PERSONS RIGHT TO PREVENT ME FROM TEACHING OTHERS, OR TO STOP ME FROM ENTERING A LIBRARY! The cuts and tuition hikes are terrible. We are on the same side, but these protests are misguided.
But beating students and making school to expensive for a average working class family, isnt a violation of the same rights you put up in your arguement. How do you propose change without direct action? Where has this lack of action gotten us so far?
The incident with the police is irrelevant to the purpose and action of the protest. Justified or not (you can determine of excessive force was used) I am debating the logic and efficacy of the protest. Further, if you feel that your rights are being violated, it does not make it ok to then go ahead and violate other people's rights. The protest should be directed at the policy makes who do not have their hands tied, that can actually increase funding so cuts and fee increases are not necessary.
I hate to say it but protest are very effective. They gained us workers rights. They helped speed up the withdrawl from Vietnam. And they are the reason the french and so many other countries have governments that work for the people and not just the system. Now these protest have happened, theres international pressure on UC to make actual change. So I would say it might be an inconvienance to you but, at least they are letting people know the system is screwed up.

Where the strike needs to be targeted is toward levying taxes from the citizens of the state to fund the institution, or convince the government to divert more funds toward education, if we want UC to continue to be an academic standard of excellence. The state has been divesting itself from the UC system for years now. How can you make demands to both not raise tuition and not make cuts? yes and no. 4 or 5 years back, when tuition fees where introduced in Germany (right, before, there weren't any) there where huge demonstrations for weeks, thousands of people, and universities had to remain closed for quite some time due to "student strikes" and blockades. still, I don't remember ever seeing the police hit people...

What a foolish protest. I don't know if this is logical to anyone, protesting the increased tuiton by preventing around 3000 students from attending class. I'm a UC student as well, but the issue is the money needs to come from somewhere, and low-income students will have CAL Grants match the increased fees 100%. The cost of this protest to the students who payed for a day of education they never received, and the fact that it occurred after the vote on the increase make this feel like a waste.

Having a fire alarm pulled in the middle of class, section, or exam impairs education. Preventing thousands of students from attending class is detrimental, and contradicts the supposed cause of the protest. It is NO PERSONS RIGHT TO PREVENT ME FROM TEACHING OTHERS, OR TO STOP ME FROM ENTERING A LIBRARY! The cuts and tuition hikes are terrible. We are on the same side, but these protests are misguided.

The incident with the police is irrelevant to the purpose and action of the protest. Justified or not (you can determine of excessive force was used) I am debating the logic and efficacy of the protest. Further, if you feel that your rights are being violated, it does not make it ok to then go ahead and violate other people's rights. The protest should be directed at the policy makes who do not have their hands tied, that can actually increase funding so cuts and fee increases are not necessary.

I hate to say it but protest are very effective. They gained us workers rights. They helped speed up the withdrawl from Vietnam. And they are the reason the french and so many other countries have governments that work for the people and not just the system. Now these protest have happened, theres international pressure on UC to make actual change. So I would say it might be an inconvienance to you but, at least they are letting people know the system is screwed up.

Where the strike needs to be targeted is toward levying taxes from the citizens of the state to fund the institution, or convince the government to divert more funds toward education, if we want UC to continue to be an academic standard of excellence. The state has been divesting itself from the UC system for years now. How can you make demands to both not raise tuition and not make cuts? yes and no. 4 or 5 years back, when tuition fees where introduced in Germany (right, before, there weren't any) there where huge demonstrations for weeks, thousands of people, and universities had to remain closed for quite some time due to "student strikes" and blockades. still, I don't remember ever seeing the police hit people...
of course, the tuition fees came anyway...

I wasn't a part of this particular protest because I felt it was ineffective. However, the actions of the police are clearly unwarranted. These students have every right under the first amendment to gather and exercise their right to free speech.

Indeed they are. That school is the property of the State, when the state says to move, you get the fuck out of dodge. Ya it sucks that fees went up, deal with it. Thats life. Life isnt fair. You adapt and overcome, not cry like a little bitch.

The state is supposed to represent the people. The people of the campus and the people who pay for it through taxes. So they have every right in the world to be there. Since the government is ours and, accountable to us. The law should be used as a shield held by the people against the government. Not a sword wielded by the government over the people for there own good. What was it our founding fathers fought for?

Im a product of public education. Which is why I think there needs to be more reform. Most everything I learned I had to learn on my own. So Im sorry my punctuation doesnt meet your standard. I thought complete sentences started with capital letters? I always thought intelligent people would question ideas. Rather than attacking grammer.

In the richest natiion in the world, in state where the elite think nothing of $400+ bottles of wine, access to higher education is being restricted, privitized. Does anyone think CHina, India, the EU are reducing the number of there citizens who can attend a univerisity? National suicide!
