This is one of the simplest and sweetest demos I have seen. What a marvelous presentation of this passionate little keyboard. Although my studio is bloated already with keyboards worth twenty times as much, I feel a need for one just like this. Good thing there's one on eBayt right now.
@klangbild2000 This poly 800 is not modified at all. Check out my other poly 800 demo for the modified version. Check out synthmod.net for instructions on modifications.
I can agree that the sequence sounds reminds me of some of the loops in Robert Fripps music. But since "frippertronics" is the name his tape delay method was dupped, I can't see how any of you have understood the term "frippertronics", you really can't say that this sounds like a specific delay...
Frippertronics (The method) was not only used by Fripp, but also Eno, Terry Riley and other composers of their time and surely in todays production as well...
I wish more manufacturers would flip the key colors this way. There's a steinway piano with green and orange keys in downtown Seattle designed by Chihuly - for 16k I think...
@TheRealCritique i agree, theres so much creatively that can be done, idk why companies insist on the same standard look on everything. They could color every key different if they wanted and make tripped out psychodelic keyboards
The are often available used for as little as $75-100...at least the regular Poly-800 is, but not sure if the rarity of the reverse keys adds much to the value.
Also, it sounds fairly 'thin' in single oscillator 8-voice mode, but if you're fine w/ just 4 voices, you can have thicker dual oscillator sounds.
They cost a lot more than that in the UK, the last one I saw in good condition went for £175 so $275 dollars or near. Ripoff Britain. This is not a bad synth but the casing is so plastic compared to a Roland, looks real cheap.
It IS very cheap construction-wise. I was personally put off of the unit when I found it was only 4 voices in dual oscillator mode, but a close friend bought one and I got to play with it a lot. It's VERY capable for the (reasonable) price it was released at, but has a lot of limitations. I'd find a MkII w/ the built-in digital delays if I really wanted to get one, but I think there are better options for the price.
Believe me, this is probably one of the nicest little synths of all time. It has some fantastic sounds. You can even connect a strap to it and play it like a guitar. The reversed colour keys are really great. SO, WHY DID I SELL ONE WITH THE REVERSED COLOUR KEYS!
I must have been crazy!
The buyer must have been crazy too. He also sold it . So, if you ever bought a 2nd hand reversed keys Korg Poly 800. maybe it started out life with a cheap guitar strap connected to it!
i have this thing!
picked it up really cheap, back in '85
it still sounds amazing to this day!

Wonderful! The reverse keys look amazing. Is the little melody a sequence that is playing from the synth or do you have it sequenced externally?
kdemco 2 years ago
its from the step sequencer in the synth

Marvelous!
You give this synth justice other videos on YouTube just don't.
