@Theakker3B Its not as silly as it sounds. The Boys was developed in the 1930s and it would have been effective against most tanks at the time. Even during the battle of France, no more than a quarter of German tanks were Panzer III or IV, meaning that the bulk of German armour would have been vulnerable to the Boys.
Tigers were not seen by the western allies till 1943.
They were also effective against Japanese tanks, but it was always a hideously unpopular gun with the soldier who fired it
@chardav58 hard to say without data but on the surface, at the time of production, yes. Today, the advances in projectile design would make the modern .50BMG a tough runner against the .55 caliber Boys of the 1940s. But since only troop transports and other vehicles are suceptable to such fire these days, large caliber anti-armor rifles are now a thing of the past... until magnetic-based weapons are fielded.
This wasn't as silly a weapon as might be imagined. Had it been properly deployed, it may have prevented the fall of Singapore. Japanese tanks were the key, and the Boys was just the thing to deal with them.
I have a MK1 like the ones featured here. I think with a bit of practice, the 805grain ap round my rifle fires at 2500fps(760mps) would most definetly pop the track steel open, not only that, turrets could be bound on lighter tanks by slugging working surfaces. Believe me, its deadly accurate and powerful at 500mtrs.I have holed 1" and a third face hardened steel plate at that range, its good value. oh and never eat anything bigger than your head.
christmanpunch, you have to realize back then everyone was fighting the germans and the japs in any and every way possible propaganda was o ne way. the boys .55 caliber anti tank rifle could prolly only take out trucks and bren carriers at best
Hard to imagine America actually had the support of the entertainment industry once. Nowadays if a cartoon like this was made about Osama and the taliban liberals would throw a bitch fit and demand the artists be arrested for child abuse. It'a also interesting that children were much more exposed to guns in those days yet there wasn't any school shootings or murders. Our society has gone to shit. Thanks liberals for turning our kids into pansy confused emos.
The thing is these days we fight fake wars for oil, so insulting people who we have invaded does not go down as well. It would put us on the same level as Hitler making anti Jewish films with rats.
LOL not worth talking about it here but I know I am right so that's OK. You are supposed to think what you do if you didn't they would have wasted a lot of money.
@christmanpunch First off, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Are you one of those idiots that sees a cartoon, or any animation for that matter, and instantly think it's meant for kids? I didn't see any kids in this, I did see British "Tommys" firing a BOYS at cartoonish German tanks. Now I am by no meens a liberal, which seems to be a catch all phrase these days mostly used by ignorant people, this is propagandist and demonises an entire groupe of people, that's my objection to it.
I am, of course, refering to the ones with the cartoon Hitler at the start... The Panzer later in the video (which seems to combine elements of various Panzer classes) is depicted more realistically...
Regardless of being made in a different era this is quite a useful video. It demonstrates the effect of solid shot on vehicle armour quite well, as well as how lighter anti-tank weapons can retain tactical utility even when more or less obsolete.
And...
40 lbs fully loaded. Imagine carrying that for 100 yards.
You definitely have to watch your ass when you're firing one of these. I've heard stories of soldiers breaking their arms and tearing the muscles in their shoulders in half due to not respecting the recoil power.
Honestly if this didn't have made by Disney in big letters at the front... I'd think Warner Bros... I wouldn't of been surprised to see Bugs Bunny walk out and start talking to Hitler... Oh and just so everyone knows... The Boys was considered mostly obsolete by the time it made it to the lines... and definitely by the time America got in the war
today they would, but in the 40s high calibre rifles weren't officially used as sniper's weapons due to their weight. You could use the Boys as a sniper weapon, but it would weigh loads; it fires a .55 round
USA kicks ass but this is for the Department of Defence for Canada and by the National Film Board of Canada....Hence the giant red maple leaf at the beginning
German engineering is overrated. As an example, I submit anything produced by HK. Their crap is only cool in video games, and to total wannabes that have never fired a rifle at all, much less in anger.
I wouldn't say it's overrated so much as it's overly complicated. Tiger tanks for example...amazing engineering and technology...but way too complicated to field properly. As for HK stuff, what do you think of the new 416/417? PM
The 416 is an AR with a gas piston. Something like ten companies have been playing with that idea since 1969. What makes H&K's so great, aside from the fact that they won't sell the uppers to civilians (even though there is no law against it).
How is the G3, for example, better than a Kalashnikov (caliber aside). They're both cheap mass-produced sheet metal rifles; but, the G3 is better because it's featured in Rainbow Six and Counterstrike? It's the fanboys that buy into H&KS hype.
The 414 is a gas piston upper for the M16. Big whup. Ten different companies have made them since 1969. The only reason they're in the public eye now is because H&K makes them, and won't offer them to civilians (making the fanboys even more wet between their legs). Yes, they're overrated. Why is the G3 the greatest weapon ever, because its made of sheet metal, but the Kalashnikov is garbage, because its made of sheet metal? They just please the fanboys by featuring hardware in Rainbow six. Blah

lol some rifle would have never worked against ANY tank in WW2, LEAST of all the german ones which were very well armored (Panther, Tiger, Pkw III, Sturmgeschuetz...)
that is where you are wrong. It did and the only reason it wasnt mass produced was because of the tremendous recoil that would often dislocate the firers shoulder
no, that's where you are wrong, rifles SUCKED, did u see any of them in 41-45? no cuz it was obvious they couldn't penetrate the german tanks, even bazooks had serious problems with Tiger tank, rifles would have been utter garbarge!
Recoiless rifles are used by India, Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghan governments, as well as others, as highly mobile, point and fire artillery. And as kinetic weapons for buildings and large targets.
Wasnt designed for late panzers they were designed for dealing with the light tanks of the mid 30's. The US used them in the pacific against the crappy japanese tanks. The British used the Boys rifle against trucks, german light armor and for heavy sniping.
Learn what the hell you are talking about before opening your mouth and looking like a dumbass.
Yea, I'll imagin that it would do quite well against rickety old pz I and II's. And in France those were the most common ones, with only a few III's and IV's (quite a few Chech 38 t too, how well aromred were they?)
That gun was made for fighting the thin skinned tanks in the late 1930's. It was usless most against german tanks when the war started to develop and by D-Day (which most people, who play to many games, seam to think the war in europe started) was usless against all medium and heavy tanks. The german version of the half track would also be vulnerable to the .55 too I guess.
Yea, and it was supposed to work against some Italian tanks as well, though the only good Italian "tank" was supposedly the stug like semovante (well it says so in the blitzkrieg game...;)) But were the Skoda tanks lightly arored enough for the boys rifle? I dont realy know
Are you complaining about the ww1 french? The whole "surrender monkeys" buissnes has no bearing what so ever on the french of that era. They did the heaviest fighting and most dying of all the entente countries, (well, maybe not Russia...). And even when dissent did start to rise in their ranks, decisive action from the leadership promtly ended it.
I'm not complaining about anything, I'm just saying America's allies, excluding France, fighting together without America are pretty whoop ass. But with America, they're unstoppable. Unfortunately going to war without France is like going hunting without your accordion.
Yeah, it took an attack on our own soil before we realized the slant eyes and Nazis weren't shittin' around...then Hitler shot himself, we nuked the Japs, and everyone lived happily ever after lulz
a guy my dad used to work with got lumbered with one of these, dragged it across france, took three shots at a german tank which did nothing but cripple his shoulder, got up and walked away then to notice the turret turning towards him and promptly shat his pants!
The Boys .55 did see some worthwhile use in WW2, the USMC used it in the pacific to clear out tree snipers because, well, it could easily go through a tree.
Brits also found the BOYS very useful against the very poor quality tanks of the Italian Army in Africa.
The USMC bought some and used them in the Marine raiding forces to attack air fields. The gunners would aim for the engine blocks on parked Aircraft; which kept them out of service for quite a while.
Finns used them to good effect too against Russian T-26s and BT-7s in the 1939 winter war.
In world war II, the Boys had use against german tank only until 1942.Bazooka replaced it.Against japanese tanks Boys rifle was usefull, for all World War II.
Very cool! Best cartoon propaganda film I've seen yet. I love the animations in the technical section. Very interesting how disney dumbs down the violence of war yet maintains some amount of realism.
You're right- it proved a disaster VERY early on, it was sort of good against armoured half-tracks, and of course trucks...but it was a disaster against ANY tank!!!
The Allies must have been pretty confident after watching this, until they ran into the new German Tiger tanks. Then it was like "Oh Shit!"

sigmasquadleader 3 years ago
aaaah yes, and these countries are of course a serious threat; strong enough to compete with any other country in the world right? -.-
Danielmorgen 3 years ago
You have a superiority complex.
A rifle may not be as effective as a single rocket, but many rifles are better than one rocket. And it doesn't cost $15,000 to fire it once.
Any occupying country always faces this dilemma:
A hundred 100-dollar rifles are better than 10 thousand dollar rifles.
If that doesn't make sense, maybe you should look into why occupying countries often lose a war, unless drastic measures are taken into place.
sigmasquadleader 3 years ago 2
Drastic measures being killing anyone and anything that does not yield and swear a creed of allegiance to the occupying/invading nation.
Old school warfare 101.
sigmasquadleader 3 years ago 2
it still remains a fact the rifles are obsolete against modern tanks like the Abrams, Leopard, Challenger, T-90/95 etc.
Danielmorgen 3 years ago
Obsolete usually is such a hard term. They are still in use, but definitely outdated by decades.
sigmasquadleader 3 years ago
yeah, useless against modern battle tanks, but against light vehicles a large-calibre rifle or autocannon would be very effective
DRAC250 3 years ago
Except against the tracks. That's where .50 calibers aim for today. That and the turret, where the tank operators would be sitting.

The Boys .55 did see some worthwhile use in WW2, the USMC used it in the pacific to clear out tree snipers because, well, it could easily go through a tree.

i think the panzerchreck, panzerfaust,PIAT,bazooka are better than this antitank rifle, and its no match for the tiger or kingtiger

Very cool! Best cartoon propaganda film I've seen yet. I love the animations in the technical section. Very interesting how disney dumbs down the violence of war yet maintains some amount of realism.

You're right- it proved a disaster VERY early on, it was sort of good against armoured half-tracks, and of course trucks...but it was a disaster against ANY tank!!!

gota disagree buddy, hit an ammo box on a tank and it would work just fine
superwoofer2007 4 years ago
Noty quite. A good hit would ventilate Panzer I's, Panzer II's and 38(t) tanks if they were hit correctly.

Pretty amazing what could be put on film when the enemy was bad and shooting at him was good.

WOW pricless piece of propaganda and training mixed into one surprising what they thought would convey the desired result to the troops!
