Just to reiterate, the vocal is definitely Turk Murphy. The other band members are Leon Oakley, trumpet; Phil Howe, clarinet; Pete Clute, Piano ; Carl Lunsford, banjo; Jim Maihack, tuba.(and also vocals on opening chorus)
Thought for sure this was written by Shel Silverstein. Reminds me a lot of the opening of "Cover of Rolling Stone" (sung by Dr. Hook) and "Helping" from the Free to Be soundtrack (sung by Tom Smothers).
OMG... what memories this brings back. I used to babysit a "special needs" kid, and because of the shows like Sesame Street and The Electric Company, she was able to gain 2 reading levels over one summer. She especially loved the number songs. Thank you for uploading this!
Love this. Pure genius. Funny and simple and yet with that lovly sesame street touch of inclusive ness. one of my favourite tv moments of all time no less!!!
The voice is the late Turk Murphy (1915-1987). He and his traditional jazz band recorded this and several Sesame Street tunes. According to Jim Goggin's book "Just for the Record" -- an interview and discography of Turk Murphy, Turk recorded this track in 1971 in San Francisco.
I used to like drawing the "Nine Lady" when I was little. I love the line "Some people say she looks like her dad; some say she looks like her mother."
The man siniging/composing here is Bud Luckey; the man you might be thinking of for Schoolhouse Rock is trumpeteer/vocalist Jack Sheldon (singer of Conjunction Juction, etc.)
Bob Dorough was the musical director/composer for SHR.
Now that you mention it . . . Mr. Sheldon's voice sounds a bit more gravelly than Mr. Luckey's. But I could see (and hear) why some would've been confused.
You are probably thinking of his voice from the Pixar Short story "Boundin"
When I first saw that video, I knew I heard his voice before, it wasn't until I watched the Pixar Story I realized that he wrote some of the best Sesame Street shorts
They still show what they consider classics, such as "The Ladybugs' Picnic" and "The Alligator King", this one not so much, but I have seen it on the show.
Over the years, I was falsely accused of making this song up. I am so grateful for Youtube for exonerating me. There is no way I could have explained it otherwise!
I've been looking for these to show my kids, so they understand the silly songs I sing every once in a while! Finally there is a place where I can show them, I'm not making them up! Its so cool to have this stuff I grew up on 30+ years ago.
I remember this too - weird cartoon (especially with the eyes) but amusing. This sounds like a Bud Luckey song; he also did the "Ladybugs Picnic" and "Alligator King" songs.
You can get "Alligator King" and "Penny Candy Man" on a CD called "Wild Man Blues" by the Turk Murphy Jazz Band. Murphy and Lucky are credited with writing those two, at least.

It seems that most Generation Xers hate the way that "Sesame Street" turned out. I tend to agree that it is pretty bad!
