I totally respect your job, its so cold. I live in Two harbors, and I will always be fascinated with these boats.I get to see them come into Duluth as well, I work at the hospital, and when a boat comes in we all stop and look and there size is bewildering! I also see you's when i'm looking for agates !!! be safe and keep us posted!! love this video!
@454wizbang Yep i have always been facinated at how amazing the great lakes are im from michigan and love watching freighters out on the horizon good luck keep safe
I am also a sailor living in Wasaga Beach Canada, even though I have never worked on the Great Lakes, I have been on in the Pacific, Atlantic Indian Ocean Baltic North Sea Mediterranean and many more places, currently in dry-dock Malaysia wishing i was home with my family!
Nice video, was wondering what the usuall on/off time is now days? I've got a buddy who works for Grand River Nav as an engineer, and he is 4 weeks on/4 weeks off, but thinks thats the only company that does that ( not sure if thats for engineers and officers or all crew members).
@bignasty120 simple as calling the Coast Guard and requesting a M.M.D. packet. Merchant Marine Document application to be exact. You would also need a T.W.I.C. (transportation worker idetification credential) Be able to pass a general pysical and drug screen and your sailin. Total investment of a couple hundred bucks, good luck.
Awsome video! I've been thinking a lot about making a career change and working on the lakes. I was considering the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. I'm trying to find out more about the lifestyle, hours, pay, and how important it is to get a degree and become a certified pilot. I'm a Michigan boy. Do you have any advice?
what's the pay like up there? i work on the river in st.louis and have road the ohio for around seven years and i make pretty good being a towboater. is it your experience that your pay is based on or is it just being with one company for a while? nice video by the way, i used to drive up to split rock in the arrow head of minnesota and mess around when i lived in the minneapolis area for a short while and i used to stop at two harbors where they load the ships and watch. it was pretty neat
@ohioracer28 The pay is better than most at Great Lakes Fleet, I also work the tugs but dont make as much tuggin. Mostly because of the ridiculous amount of overtime we work on the big boat's.
@454wizbang Considering the size of those waves, the ship appears to remain fairly level. Are they so heavy that they slice through the waves instead of moving up and down with them? Do the men aboard these ships take a beating as they would on a small boat? May be a stupid question but I honestly don't know.
Just great stuff, the color of the water in the footage of the large waves is awsome really lets you know the lakes are nothing to be messed with. The footage of the loading was really cool To!
@derdesertfox simple as calling the Coast Guard and requesting a M.M.D. packet. Merchant Marine Document application to be exact. You would also need a T.W.I.C. Sorry I took so long to respond, good luck. Maybe I'll pass ya on the lake some day...
I grew up sailing Superior and have lived and sailed in Seattle as well. Look at those short wave lengths though, three sisters will get ya!

I noticed that you have also posted what I assume to be you ice fishing. Don't get cold and ice at work, eh? Crazy!
Just kidding. It's nice to see that some people still do real work for a living! Stay off that deck when the waves are big and be safe. :-)

@bnodurft not exactly combat pay, but we do get compensated fairly. Especially in the galley
