Despite the whole GS fiasco, WotLK was my most favorite expansion.
Thats why I use playerscore instead when I have to grab a pug. It factors in all the stuff GS doesn't, and not enough people use it to turn into a PS whore. At least in my expieriences.
I agree i know how you feel though i am no gearstore whore i always work on getting gems but it takes me a while cuz i am broooke but i do what i can for being all ruthless er almost all ruthless i am working on a PvE set though
This video is outdated...GS now counts GEMS and ENCHANTS and PROPER GEAR FOR YOUR SPEC, it knows if you're wearing PVP, TANK, DPS or HEALING gear. And it adjusts the score appropriately. Gear Score is leagues ahead of Blizzards iLvL system. Do a video crying about that TC.
i think that head, shoulder and weapon enchants do give gear score, im not sure about it cuz im not a big fan of WoTLK (TBC FOREVER!!!) and im too lazy to login and check :P
Item level is not much better :/ I HATE how i have my full arena pvp gear on my Deathknight, and am still working on my tier 13 Blood set. for Raid tanking and that i always see my IL as my pvp set. So i have to go on the armoury to check my IL For my pve D:

Gear score is often a good guide line... And it has always existed, We just didn't have little visible numbers... But my big problem with gear score is the dumb addon everyone began using after, which essentially sent and received information every time some moron wanted to inspect you which in turn lead to extra lag in populated areas (Made Dalaran hell after I obtained alot of ICC heroic pieces since every noob that didn't recognize the piece decided he had to inspect me)

recount doesn't lie but it has it's bugs like a 122222220000k dps healer. Recount causes problems likes guys gankinig noobs with recount on so when they join a pug and somebody calls them out on having terrible dps they just spam it with their recount where that guy has like 5 million dps while everyone else has 9 (tank and healer excluded from this for obvious reasons)

the reason why i think gearscore is bad, is litterly bacause for example you wanna go with a pug back than in the old day's it was icc10.
but they ask a gearscore of i think it was around 5.3k to 5.5k minimum wile you can easly do it with 4.7k now im not QQ because you can't come with that pug.
but because the fact your doing with 4.7k gs more healing than some one with 6k gs... (manage that with my druid)

@darksupreme87 I agree. I am glad that almost no one on my server uses GS anymore. It's all about skill and Item level. Usually we check gear before we go in, (Manually) and we watch DPS meters. If they can't pull their weight, then we tell them to gear up and come back later.

gearscore now does include enchants and gems and it sais now how much items people have equipped that isnt appropiate to there class like they say when you got a tank item equipped while you are a retri pala

You really need to set up some kind of boom shield or position the microphone so it isn't directly in front of your mouth. I can hear you blowing in the microphone in several places in the video, and particularly badly towards the end.
My guild takes new members on Heroic runs with officers the first week they join, see how they do. Then take them on raids and see how they do, then if we think they're a viable asset to us, take them off probation and allow them to roll on loot.
Even Recount isn't a viable way to measure someone's ability to be an asset to the group, unless you dig through the details, which sometimes it could still be impossible to tell looking at pure numbers.
Sure it shows how much damage they put out, but it doesn't show when they pull threat, which may turn the boss to the raid and wipe half the raid. And it doesn't show if they hit the CC'd add with their AoE. Or if they dps'd the right add or just focused on the boss to get higher dps.
GS is now "playerscore" lol like they really needed to change the name. I don't know if it looks into gems or not yet, but it does tell you if you have'm, same with enchants. either way... Gs is a nice little way to go... well at lest he/she has the gear. plus one should always fucking look them self to see if they're using pvp shit, and other gear that doesn't help them anymore.
It's not the add-on or the creator's problem. It's the people using it the wrong way. GearScore ONLY measures the gear level of each character. Cause' I've seen some massive dps coming from a warlock who was at around 4.9k and won over a 6.1k. So, I'll not lie... people who -abuses- the add-on as to go die in fire.
well blizz's average item level dosent show how much skill and if the person is enchantet and gemmed so GS and average item level is the same just different way to show it
first off Gearscore 4.0 calculates spec, enchants, and gems and you can downrate a player by commenting his skill on the addon that is transfered to all gearscore users on that perticuler server + it's abuse proof
Hey, you should try WHR (Wow Hero rateing), it's like Gearscore but it factors gems and enchants, and recommends what raids/instances you should try, and says what spec they are scored best in.
I completely agree. Gearscore addon should burn and die. I always go and check a character out on wow-heroes, takes 30 secs longer and actually gives you info about someone being good or bad because if someone has 12 lk kills on 10 normal or hc for that matter it's pretty obvious that he/she knows the drill.
3rd reason is bad. If you see 2 people one has 5000 gs and one has 6000 gs and you have no idea how good they are you choose the 6000 gs one. Yes the 5k gs may do 3k more dps or does 50% of the total healing instead of 30% of healing but there isn't anyway to see how good they are unless you play with them

I think the problem isn't with gearscore itself, but with the way people utilise it (sorta like Religion). It's meant to be a timesaving tool that gives you an average idea of how progressed a player is, unfortunately people are consistently stupid and it's just become a dick waving contest where the size of your gearscore is directly proportionate to one's e-peen and it's just a gateway tool instead of a guide. The WoW playerbase is incapable of using their own judgement.

I don't really care either way about GS...I've seen it used as a time saving tool more than anything else in the sense that if you have a 6k GS wether you are good or not, you have seen and experienced the fights. we don't have to waste 20 mins explaining every fight to you and at least that GS will carry you to a certain extent as opposed to a fresh 80 in BoA gear. And i've seen raids go to complete shit faster than Lindsey Lohan can snort a bump for solely using gs. Gratz on Kingslayer, muah.
gearscore does need to die, like you said in the vid, people put on 264 items they don't need just to raise the GS, I have to do the same to get into groups... (although I just replace them with usefull items in the middle of it all though, most people don't bother checking me twice.)
heres why they made gearscore. the higher the gearscore the more dmg/healing you SHOULD be able to do. doesnt mean that the person will be skilled enough to actually measure up to their high gearscore. thats why you ask for achievs ^^

I agree, every raid on my server you have to have a certain amount of GS, it's stupid, I'm a warlock myself, and I do 12k dps in normal raids, and 14k in ICC. I have 5.5k GS, and people with 6k GS in my guild do around 6-9k dps in ICC.
That's the most stupid argument ever, following your logic gear has no impact on performance... and you having an average rdps of 12K with 5.5K gs is just a big fat lie, unless you can back that with some web logs.
Sure sometimes a low gear player out dps a high gear player, but this is by no means the norm. You are taking an exception and claiming it's the generale rule, stop trying to argue that better gear does not increase performance.

Achievements don't really work, way to easy to fake them. Recount don't really work, it's will not tell you anything before you are on the boss.
Inspecting players seem to be the best way, and to avoid every player on the server to show up for inspection, you set a GS limit... maybe gear score works just fine...
@renewinther Thing is, people rely to much on random players. The best way to determine a player is not his GS or his achievments, but to be apart of a guild. Thats why half of the best players arn't guildless. People seem to think that GS is the only way forward, it isn't. If you know you're skilled, you apply to a guild, half the best guilds dont just recruit those with a high GS count, people gear up better when they know what they're doing and are skilled.
I not sure where you are going with the 'just join a guild' argument... Guilds sometimes need 1-2 randoms to fill empty raid spots, even top guilds are doing alt pugs. On the other hand, most guild accept alts and social members so there is no guarantee when picking randoms based on guild.
The guild a players is in can give you an indication of the players skill, just like gearscore can.
@renewinther Top guilds are actually the ones who base players performance in a high-end raid, while the other top players of the guild are on alts. If you perform well you're either a substitute, or you're a guarenteed pick for the main raid. Social and Alt's are just what they are. There rank says it all, if you're social, you wont be needed for a raid at all if your guild is organised. And alt's of tops players, that are level 80, dont have the alt rank.
Are you saying that guilds don't need gearscore when they pick members for guild raids?... that's kinda obvious...
Gearscore is a tool for doing pugs, and you can't base your pugs only on players from guilds that you know are good. It's not like 24 other players are going to appear out of thin air, asking to join everytime you are setting up are pug.
tbh, gearscore is a good rough guestimate of ones gear, if your not checking your players gear at the start of a pug...your a bad raid leader. 9x outta 10 people will tell you anyways, if they see someone in pvp gear, or if they spot that stuff, go to a good pvp server and you wont have to qq.

I like the addon itself, however I (iguild was a top guild on server pre ICC nerf) do not use it for my guild. It is a nice easy way in a pug OS3D/ULD achiev run/TOGC run to get an idea of what that toon should be doing. But not as a skill judge or even a "you must have "x" gs for invite"....my guild made an alt ICC 10 run recently with the average gs of 4.7 highest was 5.1 and lowest was 4.2(my druid heals/rdps) and we went 7/12 no prob..did it just to prove skill trumps gs
@ht19gale82 ironically, I don't use it at all. I think it's fine, and has roughly the same abilities as WH, which some people seem to like (horde side tich uses it more than most gs-realms use gs).
People can gear for anything pugs want to use. If pugs want to use int as the only stat that matters for casters, people will gear for nothing but int and sacrifice hit (spi for healers), crit, and haste to get there. That's the problem with any simplified model of pre-screening.

@darksupreme87 I agree. I am glad that almost no one on my server uses GS anymore. It's all about skill and Item level. Usually we check gear before we go in, (Manually) and we watch DPS meters. If they can't pull their weight, then we tell them to gear up and come back later.

gearscore now does include enchants and gems and it sais now how much items people have equipped that isnt appropiate to there class like they say when you got a tank item equipped while you are a retri pala

My guild takes new members on Heroic runs with officers the first week they join, see how they do. Then take them on raids and see how they do, then if we think they're a viable asset to us, take them off probation and allow them to roll on loot.

Even Recount isn't a viable way to measure someone's ability to be an asset to the group, unless you dig through the details, which sometimes it could still be impossible to tell looking at pure numbers.
Sure it shows how much damage they put out, but it doesn't show when they pull threat, which may turn the boss to the raid and wipe half the raid. And it doesn't show if they hit the CC'd add with their AoE. Or if they dps'd the right add or just focused on the boss to get higher dps.

GS is now "playerscore" lol like they really needed to change the name. I don't know if it looks into gems or not yet, but it does tell you if you have'm, same with enchants. either way... Gs is a nice little way to go... well at lest he/she has the gear. plus one should always fucking look them self to see if they're using pvp shit, and other gear that doesn't help them anymore.

It's not the add-on or the creator's problem. It's the people using it the wrong way. GearScore ONLY measures the gear level of each character. Cause' I've seen some massive dps coming from a warlock who was at around 4.9k and won over a 6.1k. So, I'll not lie... people who -abuses- the add-on as to go die in fire.

first off Gearscore 4.0 calculates spec, enchants, and gems and you can downrate a player by commenting his skill on the addon that is transfered to all gearscore users on that perticuler server + it's abuse proof

Hey, you should try WHR (Wow Hero rateing), it's like Gearscore but it factors gems and enchants, and recommends what raids/instances you should try, and says what spec they are scored best in.

I completely agree. Gearscore addon should burn and die. I always go and check a character out on wow-heroes, takes 30 secs longer and actually gives you info about someone being good or bad because if someone has 12 lk kills on 10 normal or hc for that matter it's pretty obvious that he/she knows the drill.

3rd reason is bad. If you see 2 people one has 5000 gs and one has 6000 gs and you have no idea how good they are you choose the 6000 gs one. Yes the 5k gs may do 3k more dps or does 50% of the total healing instead of 30% of healing but there isn't anyway to see how good they are unless you play with them

I think the problem isn't with gearscore itself, but with the way people utilise it (sorta like Religion). It's meant to be a timesaving tool that gives you an average idea of how progressed a player is, unfortunately people are consistently stupid and it's just become a dick waving contest where the size of your gearscore is directly proportionate to one's e-peen and it's just a gateway tool instead of a guide. The WoW playerbase is incapable of using their own judgement.

I don't really care either way about GS...I've seen it used as a time saving tool more than anything else in the sense that if you have a 6k GS wether you are good or not, you have seen and experienced the fights. we don't have to waste 20 mins explaining every fight to you and at least that GS will carry you to a certain extent as opposed to a fresh 80 in BoA gear. And i've seen raids go to complete shit faster than Lindsey Lohan can snort a bump for solely using gs. Gratz on Kingslayer, muah.

gearscore does need to die, like you said in the vid, people put on 264 items they don't need just to raise the GS, I have to do the same to get into groups... (although I just replace them with usefull items in the middle of it all though, most people don't bother checking me twice.)

I agree, every raid on my server you have to have a certain amount of GS, it's stupid, I'm a warlock myself, and I do 12k dps in normal raids, and 14k in ICC. I have 5.5k GS, and people with 6k GS in my guild do around 6-9k dps in ICC.

That's the most stupid argument ever, following your logic gear has no impact on performance... and you having an average rdps of 12K with 5.5K gs is just a big fat lie, unless you can back that with some web logs.
Sure sometimes a low gear player out dps a high gear player, but this is by no means the norm. You are taking an exception and claiming it's the generale rule, stop trying to argue that better gear does not increase performance.

Achievements don't really work, way to easy to fake them. Recount don't really work, it's will not tell you anything before you are on the boss.
Inspecting players seem to be the best way, and to avoid every player on the server to show up for inspection, you set a GS limit... maybe gear score works just fine...

@renewinther Thing is, people rely to much on random players. The best way to determine a player is not his GS or his achievments, but to be apart of a guild. Thats why half of the best players arn't guildless. People seem to think that GS is the only way forward, it isn't. If you know you're skilled, you apply to a guild, half the best guilds dont just recruit those with a high GS count, people gear up better when they know what they're doing and are skilled.

I not sure where you are going with the 'just join a guild' argument... Guilds sometimes need 1-2 randoms to fill empty raid spots, even top guilds are doing alt pugs. On the other hand, most guild accept alts and social members so there is no guarantee when picking randoms based on guild.
The guild a players is in can give you an indication of the players skill, just like gearscore can.

@renewinther Top guilds are actually the ones who base players performance in a high-end raid, while the other top players of the guild are on alts. If you perform well you're either a substitute, or you're a guarenteed pick for the main raid. Social and Alt's are just what they are. There rank says it all, if you're social, you wont be needed for a raid at all if your guild is organised. And alt's of tops players, that are level 80, dont have the alt rank.

I like the addon itself, however I (iguild was a top guild on server pre ICC nerf) do not use it for my guild. It is a nice easy way in a pug OS3D/ULD achiev run/TOGC run to get an idea of what that toon should be doing. But not as a skill judge or even a "you must have "x" gs for invite"....my guild made an alt ICC 10 run recently with the average gs of 4.7 highest was 5.1 and lowest was 4.2(my druid heals/rdps) and we went 7/12 no prob..did it just to prove skill trumps gs

@ht19gale82 ironically, I don't use it at all. I think it's fine, and has roughly the same abilities as WH, which some people seem to like (horde side tich uses it more than most gs-realms use gs).
People can gear for anything pugs want to use. If pugs want to use int as the only stat that matters for casters, people will gear for nothing but int and sacrifice hit (spi for healers), crit, and haste to get there. That's the problem with any simplified model of pre-screening.
