Fighting the vampires later on was daunting when I was younger. Those guys were tough. There was also a creepy little kid at some point. And a Frankenstein with a chainsaw in a hedge maze.
Played this game when I was young as well but didn't find it scary really, I liked it as a kid.
1. Lots of hidden stuff from levels to items.
2. Multiple endings based on actions in the game, and not lame black/white choices either, but depending on little stuff like how much gold you spent during the game could determine that you get the bad ending.
I realize its not a good game but as a kid I didn't know that, and I still have some fond memory as this was my first castlevania game.
I was always legitimately scared of Ocarina of Time. It had the eery, dark atmosphere down better than any other game in the series and it really added grit to it. (Yes, it's darker and scarier than Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess) - MormonWarrior on Giant Bomb
I kinda wish these were more like the 2 best friends play things where they play the game but the video jumps to different stages so we see their reactions and stuff from different points in the game rather than just the beginning.
I mean I don't expect them to play through all these games, they have work to do and all that but with most scary games they aren't all that scary/interesting at the start. I was freaked out by Castlevania 64 too as a kid but not really the early part.
N64 is Kessler's first console? Does this mean this was his first castlevania? Has he gone back and played the original castlevania games, I assume he at least played SOTN since it came out on XBLA.
I really liked this game, and still think it's the best 3D Castlevania game.
If you want Castlevania 64 to be scary, get to the Villa. Then meet the Gardener. Being chased by that chainsaw-wielding maniac and his two hell hounds through a hedgemaze...THAT was scary.
The game was very atmospheric, and one of the few Castlevanias to actually have other vampires that weren't Dracula.
I hope they don't play the first half of Silent Hill 2 and give up they could at least skip to the middle.Cause like they said their is a REAL sloooow build up in Silent Hill 2 before it starts getting intense.About 5 1/2 hours I'd say.
These need to be longer for certain games. Like Silent Hill 2 is all about atmosphere... if you play it for like 15 minutes... you're not gonna get anything out of it.
@creamypies Actually the real fear of any game isn't the atmosphere (it just ampifies the terror) it's actually the limited ability to defeat enemies. Games like Silent Hill are scary just because you know you can die at any moment and you will have to restart. Think about it, is Silent Hill Home Coming scary? Dead Space? Fear? No it's because you can properly kill enemies. Also think about a level of a game where you died 100 times and you're about to beat it, you get the same terror of dying.
you didnt even get to the skeletons on motorcycles.
