What I don't get was how Ai Sugiyama was able to keep playing tennis until like 2006 or 2008, and Monica Seles wasn't able to last past 2003! Kind of not fair....
Notice that when Martina makes Sugiyama (or any other opponent) move, she wins the point. And that happens when Martina hits sharper angles and closer to the lines. IMO this match really exposed how defensive (and therefore more vulnerable) Martina's game had become. She was focused too much on keeping her errors low rather than keeping control of the points.
@Hokit Agreed. When Hingis came back she was attacking more, but after the clay season of 2006 she started retreating back, her forehand became extreme topspin at times dropping very short.
oh Ai...why?? Exhibit A in how confusing Hingis' comeback was, especially after how promisingly it began.
