Normally the HST wouldn't be too terribly bad of an idea. How they implement it however is nothing less than criminal. The HST on goods is set by pricing the item including GST & PST, then taxing the item. So essentially, we are paying taxes, on our taxes that should theoretically no longer exist.

Business with the highest proportion of non-labour costs benefit the most form this tax. 7% of non-labour costs are now basically a tax credit, rather than being a tax deduction. For most, this means an additional 5% in their pocket on all non-labour costs. And this all comes out of consumer pockets...plus an additional $800 million that the govt grabs. There was a clear admission FINALLY..that the tax was NOT revenue neutral, as first stated...LOL. As if that was a hard fact to discern..LOL

@aronlouis I run my business as a corp..so I clearly benefit from the tax. The thing that truly irks me is that NO ONE is clearly outlining what the dynamics of this tax are. I have employees that I actually care about..and I always try to tell them the exact truth of what is happening.. They are getting screwed over on this new tax..no 2 ways about it. They get absolutely NO BENEFIT that I can see. The trickle down theory is plain stupidity. If that happens in any way, it will take years....

You have several choices: You can lower your prices, pay your staff more (since you "actually care about" them), invest the money in a new business, keep it for your kids college fund, etc. Meanwhile, the poorest ~40% of the population will get more in tax savings and HST credits than the HST on the goods now subject to HST will cost them. The people paying more tax overall, are wealthy ones who spend a LOT of money on goods and services.

I don't characterize "wealthy" as middle class with 2 parents working..etc..and owning a home. @aronlouis One thing I do is urge people to subcontract so they can open an HST account to take advantage of the tax benefit....but hourly or salary employees are paying the full share of the tax, while business owners only pay into the pool on personal purchases..and we know full well that any business owner will claim as much as possible under their business to avoid paying the tax It's plain & simple..it's a transfer to business owners & corporate shareholders...plus an additional $800 mln..
