  • There was his sire sadlers wells he was the sire to many champions Oscar, old vic, Galileo, montjeu, saddlers hall, kayf Tara, in the wings, Milan and high chaparral. Who have dominated on the flat and over the jumps in the last 20 years

  • If there's a more influential sire anywhere in the breeding shed than Galileo? I certainly don't know who that horse is?

  • What a magnificent horse Galileo was on the racetrack. Maybe even more importantly to modern day racing, what a HUGE influence he's been in the breeding shed. Especially to talented middle distance horses. In nearly every major middle distance G1, likely as not you'll find at least one of top contenders in every race has been sired by Galileo. Especially if it's a Coolmore horse from Ireland. But in the case of Frankel, Galileo's also sired a top class miler as well.

  • @GBeret83 He will have another son, in 2012 as a 3 year old who I believe will be one of the best milers ever apart from his half brother Frankel. I strongly believe he will be as good a sire and might even exceed his father Sadlers Wells in years to come. These 2nd generation from Sadlers Wells are proving even better.( His Grand Progeny) Sadlers Wells will live on through Galileo and dominate the next 20 years or so easily. Wait until Frankel starts breeding.3rd generation from Sadlers Wells

  • @MrNativeDancer, I heard Freddie Head remark when he was at Churchill Downs for the BC Mile with Goldikova that Galileo is who Goldikova is going to be bred to first. It will be interesting to see how that foal turns out? IMO, there's not a better sire anywhere in the world right now than Galileo, and what his offspring have accomplished proves it.

  • Absolutely awesome. Best Derby winner of the 00's

  • scahill is a very lazy commentator who only puts on any effort in the very big races such as this. watch an ordinary maiden and you will see a very different, monotonous tone. he constantly uses the same adjectives and simply calls the order of the runners no mention if one is off the bridle etc sorry but i am amazed at all these favourable comments. the only commentator worse than des is peter o'heir (not tony)

  • @yorkcity97, Couldn't agree with you anymore than if I'd made the statement myself. I watch a ton of European racing. And this old bore, Scahill, is the worst and most boring race commentator I've ever heard anywhere. My favorite commentator for racing in Great Britain especially is big Jim McGrath. He describes a race perfectly with some purpose, and makes the races he calls sound extremely exciting. JMO.

  • dessie scahill...is the voice!...

  • Des Scahill is a legend. Great voice.

  • Des Scahill is the greatest horse-racing commentator ever!!

  • tony o hehir is the man!! the problem is RTE have their heads stuck up their asses and therefore don't cover enough meetings to truly showcase this man as being the true voice of horse racing in the modern era!

  • not very good commentary, in australia we have greg miles, hes great!!

  • I used to exercise Kastoria when i worked there, lovely horse.

  • Best British Horse for last 15 years

  • what do u mean best british horse?????

    hes irish!!!!!

  • LOL @spurs1nil

  • i don't really know anything about the irish derby or racing in europe, but I have certainly heard a lot about galileo. it's funny how at one point everyone is whipping and driving their horses and Michael Kinane is just like a statue in the stirrups. fantastic!

  • He did that in the derby on saturday. and i have the pleasure of being a relation of his.

  • Geez, Galileo was the bees knees in his prime. Spreadeagle the field indeed. Great run to the wire. Is [and who is?] the caller the same one who called Kastoria's fantastic upset win over Yeats in the 2006 Irish St. Leger? If so, really enjoyed his stretch call there too. I'm not really that knowledgeable about european or other world racing as of yet. Thanks for this post. Take care.

  • That is the great great Des Scahill who is the track-annoucer to all of Ireland's races. He calls - I reckon - some 150+ racedays a year and each meeting has at least 160 horses running...and he never gets it wrong, be it on the flat, over the jumps, in the fog, in the heat...all other commentators have it easy by comparison!

  • Wow, Scahill is very impressive. Thanks for the info. Have a great day.

  • Actually, the only 'Classic' Des Scahill doesn't call is the Irish St Leger, which is done by the BBC's JA McGrath - an Australian - and he would've been the one you heard in the Kastoria race. Scahill does the rest of the card but presumably the sponsors of the Irish Leger - Irish Field - wanted McGrath to call the big race instead. You can listen to McGrath in Ouija Board's epic victory in last year's Vodafone Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.
