  • I don't know bout this dawg...

  • man try sleeping under that in a rain storm, and packing it down to carry to next camp site aint gonna be so fun, gonna be damn heavy, bacteria will form wouldn't want squeeze water into drinking containers after that

  • That is 100% wool or a blend?

  • @squathacker 100% wool ; )

  • i have a polyester blanket that works out much like wool. in the winter we double it up and use as a ground cloth on the snow. it doesnt absorb anything and you dont feel the cold. i have a few wool blankets too. one of which i will be using to make some pants out of i think. and perhaps a jacket. never thought of using for a tarp. thanks.

  • @FixedByDoc Goodstuff, good luck with the projects ; )

  • Great video bud, How much down pour could this go through before it started dripping?

  • @CiaranRooney125 Ive had it out in the rain before, im still trying to find its threshold.. i want to do a vid.. we'll see..

    Thanks ; )

  • @Nativesurvival I'd say light drizzle to average rain would be perfect, Torrential Rain might be a slight problem :)

  • @CiaranRooney125 Ive had it in Downpour no issues for 30 mins, but i had to pack up and leave so i havnt reached its dripping point yet...

  • Good demonstration. I usually take wool in the cold months. I have had to use one as a shelter only once and it held up well in the cold rain. Just good thing it didn't freeze lol. Thanks for the vid and the ideas. Keep 'em coming.

  • @USBushcraft Thanks ; )

  • Have you tried polyester fleece at all?

  • @MrEhud77 No i havnt.. I like wool's ability to keep warm even when wet, i dont own polyester.. it would be lighter tho.. if you try it let me know how it works out ; )

    Thanks..

  • @Nativesurvival will do, i plan on picking up some fabric pretty soon, I love wool but latlet I've been trying out some fleece from underarmor..great stuff and really light.

  • I liked the video. Another thing about wool is that it doesn't melt when the fire is near it, like my nylon tarp did.

  • @srvvlhm Indeed, thanks ; )

    -Mitch

  • All this talk about wool has me thinking about the practical side. Isn't a regular tarp lighter and smaller, therefore more packable. If you bring both you can use your tarp to keep you dry and the blanket to keep you warm, but I think that a good sleeping bag is better and lighter making it easier to carry around. Just my opinion.

  • @MrItchyElbow Why Wool, imagine wrapping up in your ultralight sil-nylon tarp on a cold rainy february day when its sleeting... hypothermia time..

A tarp is great, i carry them obviously, but if i had to choose ONE, not both, its the Wool blanket all day..

The point of this vid was to demonstrate Wool can do the same job as a Tarp, and we all know it can do other things like be a,

Blanket, Cloak, Hammock, Moisture Barrier, Water Collector, Rucksack Roll, Quiver, Tent, Tarp, Shelter Door etc..

  • @Nativesurvival I was just thinking of the Canadian Tire Blue Tarp special as a tarp. Face it wool just does not compact that well, so not only is it heavy, but it takes up a lot of space that could be used for other things if you are going camping. I'm sorry, I used to be a wool blanket enthusiast, but I have learned my lesson. Wool blanket is great if it gets wet and you only have it to keep you warm. Wool blanket is bad if you consider weight, space, and debris it loves to pick up.

  • @MrItchyElbow To eacj his own, i dont mind the weight and space for such a multi purpose item ; )

    thanks..

  • Wool is also fire retardant.

  • @huguenot67 Yeah, forgot to mention that ; )

    Thanks

  • thanks for sharing.

  • @romeodelta1178 No problem.

  • Where would I purchase one like this??

  • @kastnmagic Hard to come by, were working on tracking down rare kit and will have a site, will keep you posted..

    Thanks ; )

  • to be sure to stay dry you have to use a couple of wool tarps. is it german army surplus?

  • @stidumaron One is enough when its German Army Surplus.. correct, it is easily 2x thicker than the US equivalent..

    Thanks

  • @Nativesurvival Nothing personal, I just read the double sheet business in the SAS handbook, I asked an opinion. but anyway nice video indeed.

  • @stidumaron Right on bro, i just measured the difference between the US and German blankets and check this out...

    US - 3/32"

    German - 10/32"

Not even close... i never measured them before, over 3X thicker is actually the situation.. thanks for the comments as they motivated me to measure..

  • com on,you can see the water been absorb by the blanket.2 hours of rain and the water pass trough and get you wet

  • @lekingreg Sorry not the case friend, the water runs off in beads at high speeds like nylon.. the Blanket is hanging and is fabric, thus it is basically laundry and will dry if any moisture is absorbed, also if theirs too much moisture i just ring it out.

    Thanks

  • @Nativesurvival ok,cool.....thanks for reply

  • had you ever tried it in the rain?

  • @maximillianof98 Of course, had it out in downpours ; )

Its about 2 times thicker than my US Military Wool blanket, its much heavier, and bulkier.. so im also going to try my thinner US blanket out and see how it performs..

  • @Nativesurvival but i think it will be very heavy after it is being soak in the rain, given the size and thickness of the wool blanket.

  • @maximillianof98 Yes, when finally saturated its heavy, ring out, collect water and its light again..

    Thanks..

  • do you know where i can get a wool tarp? great vid by the way.

  • @JetTheBret Military surplus blankets, get the thickest you can find ; )

  • @Nativesurvival haha alright thanks man

  • wool also doesn't get holes as easily from stray embers from the fire compared to nylon.

  • @deanznz Agreed, a good point i forgot to mention..

  • You didn't tell me anything I did not already know, but you showed me a whole new world, thank you.

  • @Dancerpro1 No problem, good to hear ; )

  • @kenny1979 Thanks bro!

    Will Do ; )

  • Good video man! I didn't realize that wool was that water resistant. I'm going to try that next chance I get.

  • @ryanjd2006 Thanks Brother!

  • Good job brother! Congratulations on your first video, too.

  • nice video. Keep the coming.

  • Great job, thanks!

  • Nice, looking forward to more vids.

  • Great job bro! I know when I first get my massively mothballed blankets from SG I lay them out on the back deck , it takes days to get them soaked enough to get the mothball smell out.

Don't you have a rabbit skin pouch that has a little story to it? Might make video on it and tell the story.

  • Good Job Mitch, the nice thing is on a dry night you could still have an additional blanket and on a wet night it is better to be dry and cold than wet and cold.

  • Nice job Bro...

Question.. when it gets saturated.. does it leak on you? Great information and inventiveness!

  • @BushcraftOnFire No, ive had it out during downpours, water pouring off the sides.. no internal drips yet.. this is a new concept for me, ill let you know if it finally drips for sure bro, and what the situation was!

  • Good Job Mitch! Had not though about ringing out for water. Would still rather have the wool around me rather than over me. Good to know it will work in a pinch.

  • Great job Mitch!

  • @sargefaria Thanks Brother!

  • How long will it withstand rain before it drips through?

  • @cowboy477989 I havnt reached its threshold yet, when i do ill make a vid ; )
