  • Music is a by-product. WTF Yeah! Like birds don't sing!

Probably put together to the rythm of a beating heart.

JAT either, you are a very poor thinker, or this is just not one of your better lectures.

  • Religion is a by-product of cognitive mechanisms.

Notice the very subliminal use of the suggestion; buy this product.

J Anderson Thompson is a false prophet.

  • Hmmm! Ants climb to the top of grass blades and so therefore there is no God because this metaphor illustrates religion. OK? No! It's not OK. Cognitive software?? WTF Cognitive pychology was debunked decades ago. I would not be paying for these lectures. J Anderson Thompson does not exist. Religion is not pre-modern science. Nice peddlling of atheism though. • GOD and religion are not in the same lexicon.

  • Religious Belief is a mind parasite! Perfect ;)

  • Why do we NOT believe in God?

Because there is NO GOD! Religion and the "concept of God" are an intense and expansive waste of human thought, And this is not an "extraordinary piece of cognitive software"!!

  • craigMellow, thanks for making this lecture available.

  • i always go back to looking at the natural world around us. it is just too amazing, and complex, and wonderful for me to believe that it all just came about from a large explosion a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

    God created everything.

whether you believe it or not.

at least that's what i think.

  • By the same reasoning, God is too amazing, and complex, and wonderful for him to have simply always existed with no construction or guidance and for me to believe that he himself had no creator.

  • @fairbanksGMAN but you're prepared to believe in an omnipotent being that lives somewhere and created everything.

I don't believe that god created everything, but am glad you added "at least that's what I think." at the end of your comment.

  • I think that when people say things like that, they're just being lazy. Plain and simple. Rather than go out and invest some time in studying how and why the world is so complex, people just throw up their hands and say "God must've done it."

And that's fine, but to say "whether you believe it or not. Just my opinion, though." is not only presumptuous and pretentious, but revelatory of the parasitic nature of religion. Blind acceptance without proof motivated by ignorance and wish-thinking.

  • well whoes to say that science and religion can be right? all things are crate from sound; sound is a wave frorm and frequenciy, everything in the universe is a wave or frequency, when god spoke the universe into existence his voice was the big bang.

  • ok, so let me get it straight. ............

all the BILLIONS of people on earth who believe in God, or some higher power, are basically pretty much a bunch of idiots.

    is that right?

at least according to this guy. this "professor"

    this 1 man

    really?

  • They aren't idiots, they are just ignorant. It's just like how people who smoke 'think' they want another cigarette when actually it's just the nicotine.

  • @a42579 Could you tell me the difference between wanting a cigarette, and it being just the nicotine?

  • The billions of people are all people (that is to say they are human) and have remarkably similar brains that are susceptible to these ideas that utilize other mechanisms in the brain to solidify their hold on a person.

  • Popularity of an idea doesn't validate the truth of an idea. Death is an extremely unpopular phenomenon that shows no signs of going away or being proven untrue. A concept accepted by billions still has no bearing on reality if a single one of the followers can't substantiate their belief system. There's over two billion Christians. But there's a billion and a half people think Islam is the truth. There's a billion Hindus. Any way you slice it, some or all of those are wrong. Likely all are.

  • excellent point very well said

  • @nbvle1919

What part of We create Belief in God ( the mind) with our brains didn't you understand?

BTW we are in the 21st century not the 12th. Belief in imaginary friends aka god, satan, spirits & other irrational fairy tales as TRUE when one is an educated adult, is sign of neurological malfunction like schizophrenia, temporal lobe epilepsy...also microdeletion or duplication of genes like 17q21.31 or 15q24 which causes retardation. Christianity & theism?

    Don't forget the BRAIN-R-Us.

  • The most critical part in his statement is that religion is a parasite of the mind. Like 'reading' being a byproduct, religion is a byproduct. But he doesn't state that 'reading' is a parasite mechanism. He expresses a value on religion seen from a western and scientific point of view. Could we have developed stable and sustainable societies in the past without religion as a social regulator ? Could it be possible to develop social communities without rites and a'sense' of a spiritual reality?

  • I don't see why not.

  • gods are man made to help control and deal the unknown before science could proof things are real. all religion are flawed due mans nature.

  • there could be a sense to the beleif of god if we state that each of us are our own god. why does all images of any god or higher power is described with light (white) .. it's all related to energy; matter is energy. All (matter,smells...) is energy vibrating. None of that is proven to be realy there.EVERYTHING in the material universe is Universal Consciousness made visible.

  • Excellent. This video ought to be shown on Churches synagogues & mosques throughout America to awaken Christ-psychotics & others infected with religious-psychosis anomaly which creates the state of retardation these poor people have.

They do not realize the BRAIN is the organ we created gods & other delusions with. We are after all in the 21st Century not the 12th when the heart was believe to be the organ to think with where the "soul" (air in the lungs) resided.

  • da last bit is stupid no offense - cos u just sed that u breath ur soul in and out of ur lungs. lol

BTW - how cum scientist hav still not created a human from scratch - which is able to live (breathe) and think like a human. - its just nagging me that they say a soul does not exist - yet they can't disprove their hypothesis (and prove that souls do not exist).

  • This is the reality concerning religion. I'm glad it's talked openly in some classrooms.

  • Interesting theory and lecture
