I never fly KLM because i know some KLM pilots and they have the same arrogance as van Zanten. They will take off when 10 planes are blocking the runway.
@GoudGeldGeileBassie lier! All KLM pilots are very motivated and are proffesionals. van zanten is a dick though. But just cause he was an ass doent mean u should not fly with klm
@GoudGeldGeileBassie Lol that isn't the case Van Zanten was in a hurry at that time (no excuse-he was the dumbest of the pilots in history) because he had to return back to Amsterdam. KLM is a decent airline and you shouldn't avoid flying with them because of Van Zanten-like people (who don't exist now!)
KLM Asia only flies to Taiwan. Airlines flying to mainland China were not allowed to fly to Taiwan by a chinese law for a long time, so KLM founded KLM Asia to do it.
Yes you are right, but they don't fly to London?! KLM ASIA is not a seperate airline, they just keep the ASIA titles to save money, it does cost a lot to take an aircraft out of service and paint it.
altough my national carrier is Singapore Airlines,i still like KLM,its not bad afterall :D i just went there 2 weeks ago and we landed in thick haze :(
The slats provide the extra lift and support better air flow over the wings by lowering to catch the air at high angles of attack when you're going slow and the nose is up while on approach.
So these retract on touchdown to immediately try and 'get rid' of the extra lift the provided on approach. It's a way of keeping reducing the lift the airplane has when it needs to stay on the runway.
That would make sense, but the outer ones don't retract so I'm not sure its right. On second viewing, it seems more likely to me that its to get out of the way of the thrust reversers' hot air.
Maybe the outer slats are kept lowered because so that the outer wing sections are still supported by some lift component thus reducing stress when running along ground at high speed. Some runways can be bumpy!
Also because 'flying' is a balance of forces you only need to significantly reduce lift to make plane stick to ground well rather than eliminate it altogether.
is dat niet saai amsterdam-hongkong een half dag in een vliegtuig ik bedoel ik wil graag piloot voor de thy willen worden maar in de CABIN als passagiers?
Yeah Sure, because of that mentality the Dutch pilot van Zanten killed more than 500 passengers in the worst airline accident in history.. he though he was the best and he went into history as the best ashole in aviation..!
Two independent report blame van Zanten of that tragedy. there is no mention of any radio problem. It's normal that some miss comunication can occur between pilots and Air Traffic Controllers, that happens daily around the world with no tragedies.. So van Zanten's arrogance was the fatal key ingredient.
The plane kept the reversers on so long becaue the plane was coming in very fast, but KLM is a excellent airliner those new colors are wonderfull. It's not becuase I'm Dutch :P
Yeah, but if you don't like an airline because of something that happened 31 years ago.... You're not gonna like a lot of airlines as loads of airlines had their major incidents.

yea that model , i think the 400 series is an incredible design. If you think of the loads that are being put on that wing its really amazing, that wing can take huge amounts of load per sq. and can flex far past what is necessary. If they didnt flex than they would snap off.Imagine the weight of just one of those GE engines.amazing!
Very true mjmoto, when I was in flight school I saw video footage of the B74 being tested for wing stability and the wing was bent 28 (upwards) before it snapped from the fuselage. And yeah, some of the new GE engines can produce thrust around the 125,000-128,000 range (meaning pounds of thrust).
On our approach to Hong Kong International (new) we were under the glide slope. The pilot decided to Go Around. So, TOGA power was applied, but then he canceled the Go Around and made the landing anyway. Very scary to be 10-20 meters above water in 767-300.
On the 747-400 (not sure about earlier models), the middle set of leading-edge slats automatically stows itself when the thrust reversers are activated. This has something to do with the air currents while the thrust reversers are activated and prevents damage to the slats.
looks scary! very bad weather for landing at that airport lol. i once landed there in a 747 n i was amazed at how close the plane was the sea when it landed on the runway, just a few meters lol.

Why does the slat fold back when the reversers come on?
adsheff 3 years ago
The slats provide the extra lift and support better air flow over the wings by lowering to catch the air at high angles of attack when you're going slow and the nose is up while on approach.
So these retract on touchdown to immediately try and 'get rid' of the extra lift the provided on approach. It's a way of keeping reducing the lift the airplane has when it needs to stay on the runway.

And outer wing not so significant anyway.
My 2 cents! :)
