We used to go up there in the 50's and 60's and explore. I remember a large outhouse -at least a 6 seater. the cottages were generally intact then. If you descend to the foot of the hill you will find an old Mica Mine near the Bloomingdale Sewage Treatment Plant. There was once a Zip Line type set up running from the overlook cliff to the base that the residents used to haul up supplies. Wes's Tavern (is it still called that) across the Turnpike used to be a brothel.
I used to play here in the late 50s early 60s when I was a kid. I have been in every cabin in your film. I used to find nazi literature in the attics. There is (was) a large pavilion that used to be covered on the northeast side of the hill that had the DAB lightning bolt. Great place to play!
I remember my Dad taking us hiking up there around Federal Hill and German Lake. At that time ( around 1970) there was still the remains of a large dilapidated wooden structure. Must have been the Bund's HQ. At German lake, there was a small dam. It was covered with Nazi slogans and other things all in German.
Ive been to the iron door a few times. Very difficult to get to but can be done. Ive even found the iron door at night. Federal hill is a very interestring place. Full of history and mystery. Thanks to Wierd NJ for there video and dedication to are local legends travel guides and best kept secerets.
Did anyone traveling through that camp see the remains of a narrow gauge railway? It was not until after a woodland fire that the remains of a narrow gauge railroad was found. Reportedly, the tracks led down towards the Dupont powder facility. This was passed on to me by a NJ Forest Fire Warden that resided in West Milford.
We tried to find it today. We found the remains of one large building. There was pottery scattered around and we found an old rusted belt buckle. We also found a package of some sort of small weird looking things in a decorative case have no clue what they were used for. never did find the door or the other cabins after 4 hours of looking. We found an old burned out pickup truck , don't know how they drove it in there.
hey we go up there all the time fourwheeling and first of all it is not german pond it german lake. my parents no much more about that then you, but nice video
We actually know a lot more about the place than we can tell you in single video. For the whole story you should read the article in the magazine--I think that even your parents might learn a thing or two from it.
Wheeler you woos. You're not afraid to go to the dangerous places along the Passaiac and you scream like a little girl when some crickets fall on you.
