When they do a recording all there is for someone to hear is the voice, of course it's going to be better quality...

When they do things live (any band) they have room to play around and not be perfect because it's a whole package deal.

CD versions are -always- "perfect" and it takes time to get it perfect, unless they're robotic one trick ponies, the live versions are usually a bit altered.
