Casualties of the Cold War and yet another case of "it seemed like a good idea at the time." And the lines weren't 30-50 miles out, more like 2-5 miles. This was a small yield bomb, one or two kilotons. Good men who didn't know what they were getting in to. But then, no one had any idea of how dangerous it all was... How little we knew! Great video, though, and a truly appropriate subject. What a lousy use of good Marines!

They had to. The governemt wanted to see what happened to soldiers in a nuclear war, at 5:33 that black box the guy is holding is used to check for radiation levels. Like bullyboy said, i think the percentage of cancer in those platoons was close to 95 or 96 percent. Depending on who far back from the bomb they were. There were different lines. For example 1 line 30 miles out, another 50 miles out.
