This is better than even a good true drumming solo. You have Louis Conte, one of the best percussionists in the world. Then you have Phil, enough said. Ricky Lawson is an excellent drummer as well. They're all playing this beautiful rhythmic drumming with some accompanying percussion. This is extremely well done despite what I'm hearing from some folks here. Well put together.!!
As already stated, this is more a percussion composition than drum solo.
From 1:32 to the crescendo @ 3:16 is based on Brasilian Samba beats. Thus the surdo (large shoulder strapped bass drum) and repinique (shoulder strapped medium tom type drum) are featured by the percussionists walking around edge of stage.
Check out Sergio Mendes' "Magalenha" for almost identical beats.
After crescendo, it sounds more like traditional latin-jazz ala tito puente.
