  • i have the exact same year and size. it is a fan. mine started that exact noise about 3 months after buying it. i know its the fan because when i open it up, blow the fan out, and push it down gently the noise stops until the wheel works itself loose again. its a defect on the fan thats on the right side under the middle. my hard drive just went out and i replaced it 2 days ago. doing that i took the time time to figure out how to remove the fan. im going to replace it soon. good luck.

  • not a hard drive...your model has 3 fans in it.

  • It's not a fan, it's a dying hard drive

  • @RonaldsThings Oh sure it's a dying hard drive. That's probably the reason why I'm hearing this sound for over a year now. If it was a dying hard drive, don't you think it'd be dead by now? My iMac is still working, and the hard drive is very much alive. I still think it's the fan.

  • @shutyourwaffle There's no fan down there. The fan openings are on the top and on the back where the power cord is. My iMac made a similar noise for about a year and then the HDD crashed. I replaced it with a new one that i had been using before in another computer. Same problem with the new one, funny noise and eventually it crashed. Now I bought a totally new hard drive from Apple and had it replaced, no funny noise and I hope that it doesn't crash again
