Saw Bruce in concert years and years ago. Love the raw music and great lyrics. No dancers or special effects necessary. Just good music.

The song isn't about a woman. It's a very cleaver play on words. Maria's bed is actually the Santa Maria river bed. Now listen to the song again with this in mind..Oh and this is from Bruce himself.

Love the use of the lyrics from "Further on up the Road". They're the same words, but they sound so sincerely happy -- to me it's as if the same character is singing as sang "Further on", but now he has found what he's looking for in "Maria's Bed". Some part of him remains from before, but now it's all been touched by the "light" of this woman, and he's truly happy.
Just the way I hear it :)

I was fortunate enough to see both the Ghost of Tom Joan tour and the Devils & Dust tour here in Toronto. The D&D show blew the Joad tour away. I don't think it had anything to do with the crowd or the venue, it was all about the setlist.
As much as I love this song (I agree, best song on D&D) I'd LOVE to hear Maria's Bed played with the full band, though. Maybe without the falsetto?
