  • that sounded amazing! so much funk you can smell it :P

  • Hi there fn nice playin dude, where would be the best place to start learning to play like this

    ?

  • Great fretless playing! Love the gary willis licks @ 0:43-0:57!

  • Sick.

  • You are incredible. I just started playing fretless, and out of the people that aren't Jaco Pastorius, Pino Palladino and my dad, you are my favourite fretless player. Also, I'd like to have sex with your bass.

  • beautiful!

  • This reverb makes that sound even more wonderful!

  • im sorry but why no frets? just wondering

  • @robinjonk Sounds funktastic without them.

  • @robinjonk I love fretless basses! They make playing a lot smoother and more free. Also it's a lot easier to create vibratos. It lets the bass sing more :)

  • great feel man, so smooth

  • nice mwaaaaahhh.....

wal is one of the best i had buy....

  • Nice fretless!! Great sound

  • Someone has his fingerings DOWN

  • WOW! The tone!!! you just killed me, man! It's a custom instrument isn't it? Looks like JB-5, but I don't remember Fender having it made of such wood.

  • @Decubuntu It's a Wal Fretless Five String. Not really a custom bass. All Wal's are hand built in England and are very costly, they start from £3500. You can choose the spec from a range of woods like Wenge, American Walnut, variouse Maple's etc. 4, 5 and 6 string With or without frets. Superb build quality is standard. I had a Warwick Thumb Bass a few years back, that was awesomely built but these are something else again. I'm going to treat myself to one very soon.

  • flats?

  • that tone is absolutely amazing, just like Gordian Knot. Possibly my favorite sound ever, and no pedals necesary

  • Mad respect for you! Playing any instrument without frets can't be an easy task.

    Congratulations! And nice sound. =)

  • @SiulMaster Thank you!

  • good !!!!!!

  • Hows the Wal 5 neck in comparison with the 4 neck? It's not like a big Warwick or Fender 5 neck is it?

  • @DMBassNVox it's much thinner than a Warwick 5 string neck, but wider than a Fender Jazz.

  • L.A Noire

  • Is that chorus I hear? Wicked.

  • @frobro14k No chorus....just the bass with a touch of reverb.

  • Thanks everyone.

  • round wounds?

  • @Vizillar2505 I can't remember what brand I used at the time; either DR's or D'Addarios....roundwounds for sure.

  • the second i heard pat metheny's "bright size life," i was like, "time to get a fretless"

man, you just can't beat the sound of a fretless. I neeeed one!

  • @Nateisbored Bright Size Life is one of my favorite albums. Jaco's tone and playing are perfect, not to mention the great tunes and the trio's interaction. I learned and have gotten to play many of those tunes over the years.....

  • hey, this is amazing and inspiring. good example video for a jazzy bass solo. i own a Warwick fretted, but wondering if I should try the fretless. Thanks.

  • This is done with really good right hand technique as well man well done mate!

  • I don't have anything to contribute other than that bass is absolutely gorgeous. It looks amazing, sounds amazing, and you play it greatly. Kudos.

  • what bass is this?

  • your tone makes me smile with joy..damnnn thats clean tone and playing

  • i am fretless player myself. my neck is rosewood and it is begining to wear down. i take good care of it but eventually it will need to be replaced.. would you suggest ebony for when/if I replace it?

  • @sublime88sublime Ebony is a harder wood than rosewood, so it will not wear down as fast, and it also has a much brighter sound than rosewood.

You may not need to replace the fingerboard depending on the condition it's in; you might be able to just have it planed by a luthier.

  • @BassLessonsNow very interesting, thanks for the advice

  • @BassLessonsNow whats the benefit of a fretless bass?

  • @sublime88sublime If you've found Your Sound in the bass you have and don't want to change it by messing with the woods used, you have at least 2 easier options: 1) try coated strings such as Elixirs or D'Addario's "EXP" line - I used them on my fretless and they allow you to keep the growl of roundwounds while softening the wear 'n tear a great deal. The same can be said for "Half-Wound"/"Groundwound" strings. 2) have an Epoxy coating applied: a larger change but a longer-term solution.

  • @sublime88sublime You should definitely try a fretless if the sound speaks to you. It's definitely a different vibe than a fretted bass, but it's got things that a fretted bass doesn't; and doesn't have some things a fretted bass does....

Check out the fretless masters: Jaco Pastorius, Pino Palladino, Marcus Miller (only played on a handful tracks, but killin), Tony Levin, Alphonso Johnson, Tony Franklin, Christian McBride, Gary Willis, Mick Karn, many more....

  • Great intontation!

  • Love your percussive pluck technique.... very tight!

  • That bass is beautiful... just beautiful.

Is it a custom built or a retail model?

  • very cool...wish i knew the head

  • Is your extra string a high c or low b?

  • @KaslarProductions It's a low B string.

  • is that a wal bass man?

  • thats the best sounding fretless ive ever heard

  • aaawwwweeesssooommmeee

  • YEASSSSS!!JACO SOUND FUCKING ACES!

  • ....had I known it would get this many views, I would've done another take without mistakes...

  • That's a lovely looking Bass man!

  • @steenbass Thanks! It was made in your country.... :)
