While I am more partial to the square bodies, this is an absolute crying shame. Lets see how much it "made sense". Paid for car that is cheap to maintain and insure, that gets 20 MPG. At 15,000 miles a year, it costs(per month) $175 for gas, about $30 insurance, $50 maintenance? $255 per month? New car? $350 payment, at 30 MPG it costs $116 for gas, $100 for insurance, $25 for maintenance. $591 per month. Thats spending $336 per month to save $59 in gas. Sounds like a government idea!

Only 1994-1996 Caprice wagons had the Impala SS LT1. 260 hp, 25 mpg highway, and room for full sheets of plywood and drywall with the tailgate closed. I couldn't find that in a new car, so I kept my '94 Caprice wagon. It's a rare breed now.

It wasn't an LT1 in 1992, just a 180 hp 350...but still a waste. Only 1994-1996 Caprice wagons had the Impala SS LT1. 260 hp, 25 mpg highway, and room for full sheets of plywood and drywall with the tailgate closed. I couldn't find that in a new car, so I kept my '94 Caprice wagon. It's a rare breed now.

Why can't a good late-model car like this be sold to a poor family rather than junked?
There are REAL CLUNKERS that need junking....cars that may be good on gas when new, but are unsafe, rusty, oil-leaking, smoke belching guzzlers now due to being old and poorly maintained. In other words, the 80s cars the "working poor" often drive out of necessity.
So many people with poor transportation don't have money for a new car, even with $4500. Why can't we let these people have the better cars?
