  • This song is even greater with Pedro Aznar at the vocals...just my 2cents.

  • O Boca Livre deixou a música muito mais bonita.

  • I was here, Tokyo, Nakano-Sun Plaza hall.

    Audience play handclap with band.

Pat said, this phenomenon is only in Japan.

  • bELLÍSIMA CANCIÓN

  • This song takes you on a spectacular journey!

  • ..Quite simply the greatest piece of contemporary music ever created...that ending is like someone throwing an ice cold bucket of water over me!!....chills!!

  • The song keeps you in heaven, but @ 6:45 PMG it takes you to a hold nother plato. This is truly music. Hands Down!!!!!

  • This song holds so much emotion and memories for me,there is so much to thank this man for. I just pray that i may hear this live one day.....

  • if only he could write lyrics, but the music is very lyrical at times in its own way...and he has written lyrics in the past...

  • I saw Pat perform this in LA in 89. I went back the next evening to hear it again. If this tune doesn't stir your soul, you must be dead and that would be a waste. It is such a wonderful masterpiece.

  • Fantastic, full love and sensible moments, take every good movie and put this music on it , or sport screens.... it works .... great song, timeless - . thx. ..

  • What is left to say? Metheny = Mozart.

  • Quite possibly the most spiritual song ever made.

  • Pat's music stirs the soul...everytime you experience it. Then , now or in the future.

  • se chopin fosse nato nel 20mo secolo, probabilmente suonerebbe la musica di pat metheny....

  • Pat Metheny carries on where MIles Davis and John Coltrane left off; exploring music. They have found new sounds; it's to bad there are so many stuck in OLD styles of jazz. I was in Anchorage a few years ago and there was jazz night at a club in downtown. It was great to hear the old jazz standards, but there was no desire to explore new sounds. I thought true jazz was a way to discover music with improvisation. Jazz musicians you may fail, but explore music with your own vision. We need it!

  • grand piano solo! and yes, it does put me on a good mood as well!

  • El genial Pat Metheny toca y arregla como los dioses. El jazz contemporáneo que todos esperamos. Mi tema preferido de él: Enf of the game, es una obra de arte

  • Timeless musical energy.....

  • I haven't seen this since I was a little girl. I always thought my dad was a nut for listening to Pat Metheny but now as an adult I find myself listening to him all the time. Thanks for posting this, I will watch it over and over.

  • Wow!!

    signé Metheny

  • You get it, Rambeou!

  • What kind of man does take to write music like this and then to have Lile Mays playing with you...

    "anthums" are not this powerful

  • Fuck yes.

  • ESTE ES UN GENIO MODERNO...DE MIS FAVORITOS!!! DE PELOS !!! EL Y TODOS SUS MUSICOS, NCHE INSPIRACION MUSICAL COMO MUY POCOS...ESTA PIEZA EN ESPECIAL ES SOLO PARA LOCUAZES....FUERA DE LO ORDINARIO!!! MUY BIEN MI PAT!!! UFFFF....DE LUJO !!!!!!

  • I always feel like I'm FLYING when I hear this!!

  • The best, the only one. For eternity

  • I love this song.... always gets a STanding O. Except in Japan of course!

Lyle Mays really shines on this song.

  • I love this song.... always gets a STanding O.

  • I can tell you when you listen to this music, nothing else will matter at the time. I promise!

  • holy shit.

  • Pat is amazing....amazing....amazing....

  • this is heavenly

    pure bliss

  • I'm walking down the street in Santa Fe New Mexico minding my own business when I look up on the marquee of the old Lensic Theater and notice I had just missed two back to back concerts from the previous two nights. Leo Kottke then Pat Metheny. Man I was depressed. Went directly to a bar had ordered a scotch neat. It helped...but not much.

  • The greatest of them all!!!!

  • no es lo mismo sin Pedro Aznar, y es que canta muy bien

  • Again, agree with rkelly62. These guys are AMAZING and to be respected. Really like the vocals and liked this particular phase (touch of Brazilian jazz) of their music career. Saw them in Davis, CA (UCD) and UCB (Berkeley) Greek Theater. Epic. Genius. Totally 2kule4u. They own the jazz world...................

  • man i want that piano chord chart, thats some sweet jazz

  • The reason he spends so much time in Europe, Japan and Brazil is because they actually understand and appreciate music, unlike American's who think Britney, Beyounce and Kanye actually have talent. We are the fast food nation in more ways than one!

This was another one of the tours I saw at Ravinia in Chicago, outdoors, summer night, lawn seats with friends from work. I made a gallon of blue margaritas. It was an AWESOME night.

  • meravigliosa : sembra la nascita di un fiume che scorga come uno zampillo da vette Himalayane e percorrendo valli e dirupi , scorre tra le pianure fino ad arrivare all'Oceano indiano

  • @fossaalta che bel commento

  • I think these guys sing this very well, staying perfectly in tune when you sing together as a single voice (most of the part) is not as easy as one may think, especially with all those long notes, but I personally like Pedro Aznar's voice and charisma more!

  • Gonna see him next week in Amsterdam, my first time!

  • At last!! Pat came with the Trio to Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest this year. What a night!!! Out of this world, natural and soothing to the soul... Thanks and welcome back!!

  • He is great, but were he is off track is that he spends most of the time touring in europe and japan, great for them but crap for us? Not being Kool pat, remember charity starts at home!

  • yes, its mostly in 22/8 (12/8 + 10/8). i personally find it easiest to count in 6/4 + 5/4.

  • In the dvd w/ this vid Pat explains this is in 3 and 2.

  • 123,123,123,12,123,123,123,12

  • @pavanatanaya 123, 12, 123, 12, 12, 123, 123, 12, 12

  • it´s 6/4 and 5/4, very good!

  • If there is one great musician on this planet, his name is Pat Metheny...

  • @Rambeou If there were two, the second's name is Lyle Mays...

  • "...of all of my favorite pat metheny group compositions, this one is definately in my top 3! i saw this same ensemble of musicians when they took this tour to the beacon theatre (n.y.c.) in '95...it was absolutely amazing to hear and see the group perform this particular composition live!...just unbelievable!!!!!!"

  • Personally I don't find it helpful to think about this piece in 11 (although I know some guys from our band do it - we played the big band arrangement, which is written alternating 12/8 10/8). The reason is, the underlying pulse is uneven (groups of 2 and 3 quavers), and this only works straightforwardly if you count in quavers too. I think it's harder to get used to than counting an even pulse of 17/4 or 19/4, say, but once you do get it in your head the (awesome) piece is surprisingly natural

  • I think Cobhams tune now was in 19 (1234 1234 1234 1234 123). Check out the album "Crosswinds" or maybe "Total Eclipse".

  • I think Celestial terrestrial commuters on Birds of fire (Mahavishnu) is in 19/16 but the drums play obviously 4/4 + 3/16. This is less evident with the PMG and Wertico doesn't "phone" the time signature.

  • maybe its in 22, but 22 is not a prime number (hence is divisible (by 2)). So more basically, its really 11 (123 123 12345) with lots of variations, including some 4/4 passages. Anyway, 11 is crazy, but drummer Billy Cobham once wrote a tune in 17 which is even more crazy. His timing was inpecible, and like this song, delivered effortlessly.

  • Layl`s hands amaze me always in this solo....:)

  • it's technically written in 22. Is there any other song in the universe in that time?

    Wicked awesome.

  • My favourite song by this band. Even though I can't dig it in the right beat... :P

  • Pretty sure it's 123 12 123 12 12, 123 123 12 12 for the intro.... i.e. a bar of 12/8 then a bar of 10/8.

  • Isn't the counting 123456 12345 123456 12345.......? o.O

  • Believe so.

  • 7:50 is the definition of satisfaction

  • Puts me in a great mood ... EVERY TIME! :)

  • clapclap clap clapclap clap clap clapclap clapclap clap clap

  • simplesmente o maximo , inacreditavel os caras são bons demais.

  • 6.50 -> 7.25 is so beautifull - synth. "creshendo" sounds like a laughing angel getting back in paradise (:>).

  • For some unknown reason, I always think of 'Middle Earth' and look for Orc's over my shoulder, when I hear this song...

One of my favorite versions of this song.

  • hahahaha thats hilarious

  • you know there are some people in the audience trying to clap along to the complex beat and totally fuck it up.

  • even decent musicians can mess that beat up with ease...but you can't really complain about it if the fans are paying now can you?

  • +2 3 4 + + +2 3+ + +

THE COUNTING haha i have that beat down pat lol i have to march and play to that. then theres the alternating piano or guitar part that goes 123 12 123 12 12 123 123 12 12 haha

  • Pedro Azanar or Mark Ledofrd? I think they have amazing voices, i preffer mark he was amazing.

    R.I.P Mark Ledford

  • i saw this show when ''The First Circle" came out and Pedro Aznar kicked ass...that dude was absolutely amazing live! He was all over the stage!

  • more precisely at 2:53 and 3/4 or so on the high note

  • It's called a blue note

  • did someone play a blooper at 2:54?

  • Yeah..sounds like it was in the piano...I don't know if it was a blooper, but if it was a dissonance in a jazz chord, it was too loud.

  • is that richard christy on drums?

  • Kenny G?

    Hahaha

  • I agree NicoPastorius. There is a certain quality in Aznar's voice that melds so well with PMG. By the way, are you related to the best bassist of Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius?

  • Jaja!! No i'm not, i wish!!! I'm just a bassist

  • Pedro Aznar is better than Mark Lefford

  • I'd say that they're just diferent and not better than one. I think all the musicians who play and who has played in PMG they' re just GREAT to be invited to play with PMG. So all they're great musicians high level and with their own "tasty" and that's why PM is always changing the band. Greetings.

  • the more the merrier.

  • Fantastic!!

  • one more reason why I hate Kenny g. Awesome video!!

  • wow your sure are on a kenny g crusade....

mind if i join you haha

  • I don't Mind At all

  • This is not smooth jazz homie

  • captainelsewhere, you are putting PM and Kenny G in the same catagory. You are not hearing what I'm hearing. When one listens to PM, it is as close to God as one can get without actually meeting their end. These are sublime compositions. Strong and well developed, far exceding the work of any jazz artist in any catagory. Sorry.

  • very well said man, couldnt have said it better myself

  • Óne word: WAUW!!!

  • I'm so proud my ears found Pat Metheny Group [3]

  • Forget the past twenty years, we are talking about one of the best musical pieces ever written

  • FREakin' AWEsome! Radford University's Jazz band is recording this!!1! ps: I'm in it!

  • A truly special piece of music, a psalm of sorts

  • this song is nothing without pedro aznar...

  • I think it sounds great both ways. but I can appreciate your opinion of Aznar. Great musician.

  • I'm playing this song in jazz band at school!

  • Me too!

Wait Im in your jazz band :D

  • Are you guys doing this in a high school jazz band?

  • only if its a really watered down version. Thats a seriously tough chart

  • deffinitely. I just recently bought a pat metheny song book with tons of lead sheets. that hand clap intro is in 22/8 some of that music is ridiculously complicated

  • great song... its my favorite.. almost every pat song has something spiritual on it.. this song is powerful in that way.. he converts the notes in spiritual medicine without saying a word.. which I find unique, I'm lucky to live the same time as Pat and Lyle... I'm so proud my ears found Pat Metheny Group

  • He is good

  • fucking amazing i love this song.

  • I think this is the best song i never heard. I bought the Score for Big Band arranged by Bob Curnow: there is a continuous change of time 12/8 (3+2+3+2+2) and 10/8 (3+3+2+2). Great arrangement for a Great song. Thank you Pat!!

  • I bought this video after a PMG concert in Boca Raton, FL. Man was I smilin'. I love it!

Mark Ledford is missed by all. He was so talented, so gifted. God bless his wife Allie.

  • By the way, this song is in 22/8 time

  • it is subdivided into 12/8 + 10/8 and further into (3+2+3+2+2)+(3+3+2+2). chyeah not being an ass btw =) just "spreading the know" haha

  • I just had multiple eargasms from this.

  • that is too funny.

  • YESSSSS!!!

  • O WOW!

    I'm a Metheny fan :-)

  • I love this live version! ^_^ I wish we have been playing like them one stage!

  • One of my favorite videos. Even in this song, Pat plays the guitar as if his life depended on it. What an inspiration to get better in my guitar playing!

  • When i'm feel sad, I just have to think of this tune to feel well.

    Thanks Lyle and Pat !

  • I swear these guys are having a cuppa with God when they play this! It's insanely out of this realm...

  • I wrote a review of the second concert they performed down here in South FL. Their shows change my life. One thing I said is that I wish they'd play more music like this in church and I want to hear stuff like this in Heaven. I believe God smiles when HE hears this. I believe Mark Ledford is up there playing for God.

  • I love this performance.....

  • good!
