well today I learned that Oda Nobunaga was a Eurasian who wore Gothic armor and Edo period Japanese carried ravens in special VIP carriers. huh, what?
I'm kinda new to the whole Sengoku Musou and Nobunaga's Ambition series, but I have been doing my homework to learn about the histories behind these series. I know the series takes HUGE liberties with actual history, but how much of it is entirely Omega-Force/Koei's ideas ? I recently saw the movie Kagemusha (1980) and noticed Nobunaga in that movie was depicted in a way similar to his depiction in the Ambition series which makes me wonder how samurai films may have infuenced the designs.
@MegaKossak He was one of the first if not the first Japanese men truly interested in European culture, he traded with them often while the other Daimyo called them barbarians and refused to trade or just simply didn't make the strive to.
@hasseo1 He got a slave from the europeons who came the christian missionaries or w/e. and actually took the black slave to live with him. Nobunaga thought the black skin was actually paint and tried to rub it off at first ha. and supposedly rumors say he fought in several battles and was treated so well alot of japanese thought he would become a general or lord of oda nobunagas. He was trully a hero. he did some so called horrible acts but in war things must be done to achieve power.
@12345668587 Nobunaga was brilliant enough to completely annihilate the Takeda at Nagashino, why you are saying that the Takeda were superior is beyond me, even If Shingen was still alive and present, he would still lose, why? Because he was the stubborn and arrogant, his son Katsuyori never learned anyway.
€@ObliviousBurrito Really? If Takeda had lived to see Nagashino,I think he would be far clever, and like Napoleon rule Japan, the takeda were superor than the other clans. Now Oda peasent, out of my face!
@12345668587 No, Shingen died of illness before Nagashino, and his son Katsuyori took over. You glorify Napoleon and Shingen like they mean something, although both of them lost.
@12345668587 Are you kidding, Nobunaga set grounds for the three unifiers of Japan, the Toyotomi and Tokugawa households wouldn't have succeeded without his first victories, are you kidding me? The Oda contributed more to Sengoku history than the Takeda ever could.
@12345668587 I hope you understand that there is no black and white in war, Nobunaga may have been cruel but was not pure evil, if your only getting your information from this game, than your view on history is entirely deformed. Nobunaga ruled like a tyrant yes, but eventually he lightened up when an officer committed seppuku to get his attention, this saddened Nobunaga and he eventually lightened up and went on to conquer 2/3 of Japan. He wasn't evil, more of a merciful thug.
@ObliviousBurrito This game???Mate,I play Shtw 2. What I want to know is,why would Oda order his general to kill his wife?Nobunaga ordered the death of Takeda Generals, thanks to Tokugawa ,they surived.he was evil.He was wellington, only eviler.
Shingen Takeda, the most competent in the entire clan, was as "evil" or even worse than Nobunaga.
"he had forced Suwa Yorishige to commit suicide (or had him murdered) after the two warlords had signed a peace treaty, and then proceeded to take Suwa's daughter as a mistress, ignoring the fact that she was techincally his own niece"
More on Shingen:"he kept two iron cauldrons on hand to boil alive certain criminals (a practice considered sufficiently cruel enough to provoke Tokugawa Ieyasu to have the cauldrons destroyed years later)"
As for Nobunaga, the supposed villain? He held charity festivals at his castle, distributing the rich visitors money among the poor. Nobunaga had a temper, but he was a good man by the standard set by the time.
@12345668587 The Takeda should have won? LOL! That's a case of "Would have, should have, could have" but they didn't.
Let's face these simple facts: During the Oda's rise, they were literally attacked from every direction that Shogun Yoshiaki could scheme from, getting Daimyo to agree to fight him. The Ikko-Ikki fought against them for a long time. But despite hostility all this, Nobunaga was victorious and paved the way for unification that Hideyoshi and later Tokugawa completed.
@12345668587 Also, Oda was able to adopt tactics, and steadily became more open minded with foreigners as he progressed in his rule, he would adopt tactics and weapons that people like Shingen were to STUBBORN and ARROGANT to accept. Oda outclassed and out-strategized the Takeda, if you can't deal with it cry me a river, because even Nobunaga knew that Samurai spirit couldn't best the rifle.
@ObliviousBurrito Ha,there were ways in which you defeat matchlock.Oda was no hero,he was cruel! He was stubborn"""!Nobunaga was a fool! What kind of a leader would order his loyal general to kill his wife?
@hasseo1 He is a great model i think of a hero and somone who was open to many cultures and not predajice like many before. I love how in koei and history Cao Cao and Nobunaga are viewed as evil / bad guys, yet they are one of the few rulers who didnt care about somones looks for the most part. all they cared about was your abilities and loyalty even tho that might not seem alot to some thats huge and means more than almost any words can describe. Few in the world ever achieve that ability
@TheSumoSamurai Exactly, so many antagonize these two because oh I don't know, they didn't throw food and gold at the peasants. Sure, both didn't act in the most tactful of ways, but did what needed to be done in order to establish a stable country, Cao Cao and Nobunaga are the two guys to get shit done swiftly and efficiently, if they had the sentimental weakness that warlords such as the pussyfoot Liu Bei or Hojo Ujiyasu had, than their nations would fall apart. I wouldn't want them as (cont)
...You're giving Liu Bei way too little credit here. The man was smart, able and a terrific commander- and a far better tactician than Zhuge Liang. Also a good, if somewhat ruthless lord(killing Liu Feng to avoid a blood feud). Historical Liu Bei was as far from pussyfoot as you can come, getting beat down but getting up again time after time. Dude embodied "Never give up".

this is one of the longest games i ever played. i didnt even like it really but i just love nobunage and toyotomi so much that i bought it and played it. i was bored by the end though. great story, boring game
The Samurai Warriors games have an interesting view of Nobunaga. They always start out like he's some crazy evil villain bent on destroying the world, and only after he is killed does his killer see the brilliance in his actions.
While I'm not entirely sure on the accuracy of the character, the game's portrayal of Nobunaga is a deep and philosophical one. He is the perfect example of a dark hero.
I kind of like KOEI made his armor and weapon look more European than Japanese to sort of reflect his interest in their culture. I always thought that was a neat motif.
damn nobunaga cut through them like a blade cuts through butter no challenge and i have a ? wat do the soldiers stick there spears through at the end?
On Nobunaga, I respect Nobunaga in the sense that he is a strong leader, he employed very strong tactics on the battlefield and made real changes to Japan- when it needed it, but if you research, there are many of incidents where he unneccessarily massacred prisoners an unarmed men, women and children.
alot of these may be considered unneccessary, and may be one of the reasons for Akechi's eventual betrayal.
it's highly possible that nobunaga's behaviors were ethically unacceptable for well-educated guy like akechi, but it cannot be a sole reason. and, measuring historical ppl in today's standard may be wrong and i don't think he was such an idealist in ethical mean.
some says he couldn't resist to take the last good chance to take nobunaga's place when he realized nobunaga was together with few soldiers while he got his own army. i guess his own ambition and hatred toward nobunaga pushed him.
I mean, I never said I knew exactly what Akechi was thinking in 1582 Japan at Honno ji, Kyoto, ... no one really does, ... I just have my opinion, and think that just because one reads a book, doesn;t make it true,
ones opinion is each to their own!,
I really like the way Samurai Warriors portry Akechi as a hero, and like the way that Basra (devil kings) portrays Akechi as a blood thirsty psychopath!!, Brilliant games!!
nobunaga oda is my favorite samurai daimyo of all time not from this game but in REAL LIFE JAPANESE HISTORY RESEARCH i hate when everyone thinks they no about japan and the samurai just because they played this game fun game though
its easy to sit there and be condescending and say "read a book", but you also need to look beyond the book and consider who wrote the book!
The winners in history write the books!
Of course you think Akechi is treacherous, because Toyotomi successfully defeated Akechi and avenged Oda's death and therefore gets to write the book and state his POV; that Akechi is a traitor to his faithful master; Oda Nobunaga
You wouldn;t be wrong even if you did believe that, The Akechi "good or evil" is still open to debate!- it is just MY opinion that he had strong morals and was on the side of righteousness!!
Toyotomi was treacherous? to whom?, Nobunaga?, please explain!
Toyotomi was a bit crazy, his campaign in Korea after unifying Japan, was a complete waste of resources and time, and ultimately led to his demise as Tokugawa stayed at home and got stronger!- an then eventually took power
toyotomi pretended to support one of nobunagas sons whil shibata katsuie supported the other. toyotomi won but didnt let the son he supported control the oda lands
not neccessarily, sure Akechi kills Nobunaga, and the history books state that he was a "traitor", but, you need to realise, that it is always the winners that write history!
I believe Akechi thought that Oda went too far and was to ruthless- in killing prisoners and massacre of mt. Hiei, etc.
Akechi was a selfish man who considered people of superior ability below him(Hideyoshi), and got outraged at the concept of making a man roughly 40 years younger than him the same rank. Mitsuhide was an old man with entitlement issues- he was past 55 when backstabbing Oda.
You are right that Okehazama wasn't he's first fight However, the two battles featured in the video, Okehazama and Nagashino, showed Nobunaga's brilliance as a warlord.
Not really. They just descended from the mountain top. But you could be right, because since it was raining, it would have made the terrain all wet and slippery.
Yes it is and this battle is nobnaga's first victory to rule the entire land, also how come they no longer show yoshimoto(the guy who got stabed by nobunagas spearmen in his carrier).
Battle of Okehazama, one of the famous battle won by Nobunaga...some says that Nobunaga was apotheosized in this battle, some says that he was just plain lucky~ anyway, this was a good video ^^

Moreover, if the Nazis had won WW2, if would have been Churchill put on trail and the Allies would now be considered "evil"
If the confederates had defeated the unionists, slavery may still be considered "normal".
you need to be careful not to take books or articles as actual truth, an consider the people who wrote it.
This happens in Japan to this day, when history textbooks are under censorship to make Japanese involvement in WW2 appear as a positive one!

akechi was nothing but a traior and a sell out in real life n in the game
explodation 3 years ago
not neccessarily, sure Akechi kills Nobunaga, and the history books state that he was a "traitor", but, you need to realise, that it is always the winners that write history!
I believe Akechi thought that Oda went too far and was to ruthless- in killing prisoners and massacre of mt. Hiei, etc.
shanecle 3 years ago
@shanecle
Akechi was a selfish man who considered people of superior ability below him(Hideyoshi), and got outraged at the concept of making a man roughly 40 years younger than him the same rank. Mitsuhide was an old man with entitlement issues- he was past 55 when backstabbing Oda.

You are right that Okehazama wasn't he's first fight However, the two battles featured in the video, Okehazama and Nagashino, showed Nobunaga's brilliance as a warlord.

wow.. it looks impossible for horses to descend through such a sharp angle without falling but then again this is just a game.
darkvision 5 years ago
Not really. They just descended from the mountain top. But you could be right, because since it was raining, it would have made the terrain all wet and slippery.

wasn't this the battle where nobunaga defeated the imagawa?
wlam 5 years ago
Yes it is and this battle is nobnaga's first victory to rule the entire land, also how come they no longer show yoshimoto(the guy who got stabed by nobunagas spearmen in his carrier).
