  • where can i buy this? i have looked everywhere. Help!

  • I saw Robert Morse in a road version at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul...what a great performance!

  • I saw Morse do TRU on B'way in 1990 -- I had 5th row center seats. It was a tour de force!

  • Anyone know who is speaking to on the phone? who he refers to as "Mrs. G"?

  • @mccheesefries -- Ava Gardner, I believe.

  • @mccheesefries

"Mrs. G." makes me think it's most likely Gloria Guinness as she was one of his "Swans," his group of ultra-fashionable women - along with Babe Paley, Slim Keith, etc. - that were his main "groupies" until his chapters of "Answered Prayers" were published and they dropped him from their lives.

  • @mccheesefries I read that Mrs. G was C.Z. Guest, one of the few socialites to stick with him affter his fall from grace.

  • erp65: THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

I saw this when it aired on PBS, videotaped it (missing about the first 2 minutes). Played it so much that its tracking is messed up. A fascinating performance, well deserving of his acting awards (at least the Emmy awards. At the time I was pleasantly surprised when he won, never thought they would honor a taped theatrical performance, goes to show they occasionally do get it right!). I wish this would be on DVD - this and the original GIN GAME (Tandy/Cronyn).

  • You're so lucky, I've tried for years to have it.... but... you know I live in Southern Italy!

  • I'm so glad to find this! I used to have it on video nearly 20 years ago. It was a wonderful performance. I'd love to find a copy.

  • I was fortunate to catch this live at the Kenndy Ctr back in the early 90's. Fantastic actor!

  • I saw this live in 89, had great seats too. I also saw the recorded version on PBS, I think. Is there any way to purchase a copy?

  • THANKS for posting! I've always loved the work of Robert Morse. An extremely talented performer. Too bad his voice isn't much like Capote's. But other than that, it's a joy for me to see this filmed play today for the first time. You've MADE my day & my week! :-)

  • @Duke535 -- heheh

  • @Duke535 -- Yes, I didn't take them literally. My replies were a form of sarcasm three degrees more subtle than yours, and thus undetectable by your sensors. Again, Web 1.0 shenanigans.

  • @Duke535 -- Ah, let me educate you about Web 1.0 emoticons. They became popular about the time the Helvetica was invented, back in the days of oaken boardwalks and bakelite rotary phones.

Tilt your head as far sideways to the left as it will go.

Now look at this ----> ;)

The semicolon sorta looks like winking eyes, don't it?

The parenthesis sorta looks like a a smiley face, don't it?

Put 2 & 2 together, and you have: a winking smiley face.

    Now ya know. ;o

  • @Duke535 -- Method acting? ;)

  • is there any way to get a script from this play? like is that at all possible?

  • @tlduhon -- I just spent ten minutes looking (searching Dramatists Play Service, Amazon, FINDaPlay, etc.) ... nada. There's a wikipedia page for the play (Google "tru play capote wiki"). Perhaps you can contact the playwright (Jay Presson Allen) directly or through his agent/publisher and ask for a copy?

  • I've already watched the entire thing, despite it being 2 AM when I stumbled upon it. It is absolutely amazing, and I'm certain that I'll watch it many time more in the future. It is things like this, a old VHS tape producing a digital opportunity for the entire world, that continues to amaze me about the internet.

  • @marcusmo1 -- Right, like listening to old radio shows from the '40s ... online. (Which I do.)

  • Bless your heart! I happened to catch an encore performance of this on PBS maybe 15 years ago, and have wanted to see it again ever since! It is utterly unavailable. I have checked around the internet periodically for several years, and tonight, I found your postings!

  • Amazing claim at 09:35. Is that true (Tru)?

  • I doubt that there's independent confirmation of this. But Capote did claim to have met Oswald years before the JFK assassination.

Search Google Books for "Portraits and Observations." The relevant section is on p. 331.

  • Thanks for posting.

  • Enjoy!

  • A million thanks. I've never forgotten this and especially think of Tru during the holidays.
